The context of the communication
The context of the communication; verbal communication needs to changed according to whichever situation we find ourselves in when with children or young people. If we are working in a more social location other than school, how will our approach be? If we are speaking to another TA or a teacher, how will our tone and gesture, language all be? This all needs to be considered when assisting a child
Communication differences Communication differences; when working with children or young people with communication difficulties it is vital that we ensure patience and understanding as they will need to take more time and feel unpressured while speaking. - Communicate clear ,concise and appropriate to their ages, needs, abilities by using words and phrases they will understand
- actively listening to children
- positive response, even if they portray negative behaviour.
- asking and answering questions to prompt responses and check understanding
- adapt communication to their ages, use age appropriate words.
- concentrate what child is saying, never ignore what the child is saying.
- use non-verbal communication skills like smile, nodding , eye contact etc.
- Praise and encouragement
- Have a set standard rule for everyone, in and out of the class.
- Give support while communicating with children.
- Always stay positive, give encouragement and reassurance, especially to children who are SEN.

Working with a child on an individual basis

The main focus of TAs is to support learners with special or additional educational needs, many a times a TA is used for support in a class or outside class. I have been fortunate enough to experience both instances. In this section our focus will be; what are the things we as TA’s can do to support a child on a one to one …show more content…
Working in small groups provides learners with opportunities to articulate ideas and understandings, helps children work with different abilities, which then enables them to develop both positive relationship and social skills. Group activities enable students to discover deeper meaning in the content and improve thinking skills. When I was a student, I loved group work, till date, I encourage all sorts of group work, because, a lot of children then can work with other students in the class other than their friends. This helps build tolerance and equality in the child.
Think-Pair-Share: Students form pairs, talk about their responses, and formulate a joint response. Some pairs are called on to summarize their discussion for the class. Many a time I use this for a starter activity in the class, so they turn to their partners and discuss what they previously learnt.
Group discussions: allow the children to share ideas, and allow good ideas to come into your teaching. Encourage to respect each other’s opinion. I always tell children, that let people express their thoughts and ideas, even if you may not like it. This will help your listening skills and communication skills as well. Even as an adult absolutely love this idea. I personally think this strengthens your social
