Introduction
This report is about the unethical activities and irresponsible behaviour of the company Danone and especially Danone Activia and Actimel. The first and second paragraph are about the products Danone Activia and Actimel. After these the unethical activities and irresponsible behaviour will be explained. The last paragraph is about why the company is ethical or why not.
-------------------------------------------------
Danone Activia
Danone Activia is a low-fat yogurt made by Danone, part of the Danone Group a company from France. Danone Activia contains Bifidis Regularis, which is a probiotic that helps regulate your digestive system. Danone Activia is available in seven different flavours and varieties.
As told Activia is available in seven different flavours and varieties. The 113 grams Yogurt flavour packages are available in strawberry, vanilla, peach, blueberry, prune, cherry, mixed berry, strawberry-banana and raspberry. The yogurt is also available in a light variant.
The probiotic, Bifidis Regularis, is a microorganisms which is alive. These microorganisms are known as good bacteria and can be found in food and supplements. They are essential in protection against disease, digestion and a proper development of the immune system.
Because the Bifidis Regularis is a unique probiotic that is developed by the Danone Group, Activia is the only product in the world that contains Bifidis Regularis. The Danone Group says that the Bifidis Regularis arrives in the colon as a live microorganisms, this makes it possible that Bifidis Regularis supports the delay of the digestion and prevent bloating.
-------------------------------------------------
Danone Actimel
Danone Actimel, also produced by Danone, is a delicious dairy drink that contains the unique and good bacteria Lactobacillus caseï Defensis. Lactobacillus caseï Defensis is selected by Danone because of its beneficial effect on resistance. Several scientific studies by the Danone Group have shown that Actimel, thanks to its unique and good bacteria, stimulate our resistance in the guts on three levels. These are: * Actimel contributes to a balanced intestinal flora, so germs have no chance to plant it selves in our intestines * Actimel stimulates the making of mucosa, that makes it easier to remove germs quickly * Actimel is able to stimulate specific immune cells in the intestinal wall, by what the immune system is activated
Also Danone claims that Lactobacillus caseï Defensis survives the gastric acids and Lactobacillus caseï Defensis is only be found in Actimel.
Danone Actimel is for sell in a 4-pack of 100 millilitres bottles and are available in five different flavours; Natural, strawberry, multi-fruit, natural light and raspberry-cranberry light.

-------------------------------------------------
Unethical activities and irresponsible behaviour
Because the Danone Group is the founder of both Bifidis Regularis probiotic and the good bacteria Lactobacillus caseï Defensis, they can claim the beneficial effects of those good bacteria. For claiming those beneficial effects the Danone Group did several scientific studies by themselves. So it is very easy to manipulate the studies and the results of the studies.
The product Activia is a low-fat yogurt, but the costs for producing low-fat yogurt are much higher than the costs for normal yogurt. So the decrease the costs the Danone Group can use normal yogurt instead of low-fat yogurt. On the package the can claim that they used low-fat yogurt, but if nobody verified the real ingredients of the product and the consumers assume that the product is full of healthy ingredients the Danone Group can just claime that Activia and Actimel are healthy products.
Seen form the marketing, the Danone Group did an excellent job. The created good bacteria, did several scientific studies by themselves and concluded that Activia and Actimel are good for your health and increase your resistance. Then they made consumers believe them and the turnover grew.
In The Netherlands Danone received the “Gouden Windei” from Foodwatch. This is a company that looks at the marketing activities that are misleading the consumers. The reason that the Danone Group received the “price” is because Danone tries to convince the consumer, with a perfect marketing campaign and several scientific studies, that Activia and Actimel are good for health and increase your resistance. They even create the impression that Activia and Actimel decrease the chance of having a cold.
Also there are no official results and summaries of the scientific studies by the Danone Group. So nobody knows if it really works and if it works with everybody. Because there are no official results and summaries of the scientific studies nobody knows how the studies took place and if there were any subjects in the test. The claims of beneficial efforts by using Activia and Actimel are basicly results of the scientific studies, but there is no testimony of the studies!

-------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
This paragraph is about the conlusion after analysing the products Danone Activia and Actimel. Also there are some recommended actions that the company can take to correct themselves and get a better brand image or avoid a bad reputation.
The conclusion after analysing the Danone Group is that they are far from ethical because in their marketing activities they promoted a lot of beneficial effects of Danone Activia and Actimel that are founded by themselves.
Because the Danone Group is the founder of the Bifidis Regularis probiotic and the good bacteria Lactobacillus caseï Defensis, they can do anything that they want with these probiotic and good bacteria. And relate a lot of beneficial effects for human health when they are using Danone Activia and Actimel.
If the Danone Group wants to correct themselves and get a better brand image they can do the following action.
An independent scientific body has to do several scientific studies to clarify to working of the Bifidis Regularis probiotic and the good bacteria Lactobacillus caseï Defensis. When they concluded that all the claims of the Danone Group are trutful, the Danone Group can still go on with their marketing campaign. Because the Danone Group is the founder of those probiotic and good bacteria, no other company can use Bifidis Regularis and Lactobacillus caseï Defensis unless they asked the Danone Group for permission. The Danone Groep would be very stupid of they gave another company permission to use their probiotics and good bacteria.
If the result of the independent scientific body is negative, the Danone Group have to stop immediately with their marketing campaign. They cannot longer claim the beneficial effects of the use of Activia and Actimel. What they can do is suggest that the use of Danone Activia and Actimel might help your digestion and increase your resistance, but that they are not responsible if it not works. So in this case the Danone Group do not guarantee a working of the Bifidis Regularis and Lactobacillus caseï Defensis.

The Dannon Company

...THE DANNON COMPANY: MARKETING AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (A) Question 1) Should Dannon proactively communicate its CSR activities to the public? Discuss pros and cons of your decision. Answer: Dannon should not communicate its CSR activities to the public. Dannon and Yoplait are the two leading company in US with Yoplait have 35.4% market share and Dannon is second with 28.9% market share. Dannon is not too far behind Yoplait and so they don’t need to do much to become the number 1 player in America. Also, the consumers can gather more knowledge about the CSR activities of Dannon through the Dannon cares section on the website and the 16- page Corporate Social Responsibility Overview. So, it is not that the consumers are fully unaware of the company’s CSR activities. The pros of not communicating the CSR activities are: * When they will spend their marketing budget on TV ads, in-store shopper marketing tactics, branded websites etc. people will become more aware about the high health benefit products that they provide and thus increase the consumption. * Communicating its CSR activities to the public will not be of much benefit because consumers are more concerned about how much satisfaction the product can provide and how it impacts their life. * As the consumption increases, the loyalty will increase and there will be long-term sales impact. * Sometimes the consumers...

Cannon Company-Case Study

...Case Study: The Dannon Company OL 690: Responsible Corporate Leadership Southern New Hampshire University March 25th, 2015 Introduction Danone, the parent company and U.S. subsidiary of Dannon, was founded in Barcelona Spain in 1919 by Isaac Carasso (Marquis, Shah, Tolleson, & Thomason, 2011). Isaac had the goal of developing a yogurt for more than the purpose of taste, but with additional inherent health benefits (Marquis, et al., 2011). The health benefits were based on the use of pure lactic ferments, which were initially prescribed by physicians due to their proven ability to help treat intestinal disorders (Marquis, et al., 2011). It was because of Carasso that consumers could have the added benefit of treating their intestinal disorder while nourishing their bodies. Daniel Carasso, Isaac’s son, was brought into the business and ultimately became CEO in 1939 after Isaac’s death (Marquis, et al., 2011). Prior to his father’s death, Daniel was able to take Danone to another level in 1929 when he founded it in Paris (Marquis, et al., 2011). Due to the extensive amount of competition in the yogurt business, Daniel leveraged the focus on health to differentiate Danone from the competition (Marquis, et al., 2011). After his father’s death, Daniel merged with two notable organizations in 1967 and 1973, Gervais and Boussois-Souchon-Neuvesel (BSN) respectively (Marquis, et al., 2011). These mergers resulted in rapid expansion throughout Europe, a newly named conglomerate...

However, in 2001, conflict arise when Wahaha Group created a series of Non-joint venture companies that sold the same product as the joint venture and use the Wahaha trademark. Since then, a long time dispute continued around the ownership of the “Wahaha” trademark, the rationality of the existence of non-joint ventures and the non-compete issue. Several lawsuits were carried but all ended in Wahaha’s favor. Eventually, Danone relinquish the claims and secede from the joint venture by selling its 51 percent share to the business’s Chinese partners. Main body With a global standing and desire for international expansion, Danone entered the Chinese market in the late 1980s. Compared with many developed countries where markets almost reach saturation, China has a promising market with cheap labor which provide a good opportunity for Danone to further develop. At early stage, Danone entered China through forming a joint venture with the local enterprise Wahaha. There are three main reasons for why Danone use the joint venture mode instead of using other modes to enter China. First, Danone can benefit a lot from Wahaha’s knowledge of local Chinese...

Having previously lived in the Balkans where yogurt was a dietary staple, Carasso decided to introduce this healthy product in Barcelona. He opened a small yogurt business named "Danone," meaning "Little Daniel" after his son. Carasso was aware of scientific advances that had been made with fermented milk by Elie Metchnikoff at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He perfected the first industrial manufacturing process by combining the traditional method of making yogurt with the pure cultures that had been isolated in Paris. In 1923, the first Danone yogurts start to be sold in pharmacies as doctors recommend it for its therapeutic qualities. The younger Carasso, Daniel, learned the family business in Spain and decided to establish Danone in France in 1929. In 1949, the yogurt is almost a dairy product. The porcelain “envase” is substituted by the one made of glass. This innovation makes it easier to popularize the yogurt. In 1968, Danone starts its first TV campaign. In 1985, Danone creates its first “low fat yogurt” called “Danone Desnatado”. In 1992, Danone was the Official Sponsor of Barcelona's Olympic Games. “Danone Institute” is created in 1993.
