...Analysis: Beijing’s tough line vs. Manila in Panatag Shoal standoff DAVID LAGUE, REUTERS May 25, 2012 9:52pm HONG KONG—Alongside an armada of paramilitary patrol vessels and fishing boats, China has fired off a barrage of historical records to reinforce its claim over a disputed shoal near the Philippines in the South China Sea. While this propaganda broadside makes it clear Beijing will take a tough line with Manila as a standoff over Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal continues into a seventh week, the exact legal justification for China's claim and the full extent of the territory affected remain uncertain, according to experts in maritime law. Like most of its claims to vast expanses of the resource-rich and strategically important South China Sea, Beijing prefers to remain ambiguous about the details, they say. This allows the ruling Communist Party to demonstrate to an increasingly nationalistic domestic audience that it can defend China's right to control a swathe of ocean territory. And, it avoids further inflaming tensions with neighbors who are already apprehensive about China's growing military power and territorial ambition. "This ambiguity serves China's domestic purpose which is to safeguard the government's legitimacy and satisfy domestic public opinion," said Sun Yun, a Washington DC-based China foreign policy expert and a former analyst for the International Crisis Group in Beijing. Potential flashpoint Rival claims to territory in the...

...Tuning Surface Charge Property by Floating Gate Field Effect Transistor Song Xue1, Ning Hu2, Shizhi Qian1+ 1Institute of Micro/Nanotechnology, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529, USA 2 Bioengineering College, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400030, P.R. China Abstract Interfacial electrokinetic phenomena, which highly depend on the surface charge property of an object in contact with an aqueous electrolyte solution, have been widely used to manipulate and transport ions, fluids and particles in micro/nanofluidic devices. Field effect transistor (FET) offers flexible and rapid control of the surface charge property, which in turn provides a more sophisticated control of the electrokinetics-based micro/nanofluidics. Tuning the surface charge property by a floating gate field effect transistor (FGFET) rather than the conventional FET is proposed and analyzed for the first time. In contrast to the conventional FET having a control gate fabricated on the outer surface of the dielectric channel wall, the FGFET has an additional floating gate electrode embedded inside the dielectric channel wall. A mathematical model has been developed to analyze the zeta potential of a planar dielectric surface regulated by the conventional FET and the FGFET techniques. Results show that the FGFET is superior to the conventional FET to tune the surface charge property of a dielectric material in contact with an aqueous solution. The FGFET has great potential to control ions, fluids...

Cut out the card and the “string of hearts.” Fold the card widthwise first, then fold the card a second time, lengthwise. The inside of the card should feature the words “I” and “You”. 2. To create the “string of hearts,” start by folding along the first dashed line on the left so the half heart is showing like it is in the diagram. Now, work your away along the “string” by making a fold at every dashed line. The second half of a heart should fold under the first and so on, creating an accordion fold. 3. Once your hearts are folded, cut along the shape of the half heart on the top and the bottom of the accordion fold. Make sure you keep it connected to all the other hearts via the right side of the fold. When you open your string, the hearts should all be connected. You may need to trim away any extra white paper. cut out heart Page 2 of 3 Valentine’s Day Pop-Out Card 4. You won’t need the half heart on the left side of the string; cut it off along the fold. Now, tape or glue the left half of the leftmost heart to the inside of the card, on top of the grey heart marker on the card. Tilt it slightly to the right before the glue dries to create a bowing effect. Now, glue or tape the right half of the rightmost heart to the inside of the card over the other grey heart...

... Eldren Suaybaguio Teacher Love at the lips was touch As sweet as I could bear; And once that seemed too much; I lived on air That crossed me from sweet things, The flow of - was it musk From hidden grapevine springs Down hill at dusk? I had the swirl and ache From sprays of honeysuckle That when they're gathered shake Dew on the knuckle. I craved strong sweets, but those Seemed strong when I was young; The petal of the rose It was that stung. Now no joy but lacks salt That is not dashed with pain And weariness and fault; I crave the stain Of tears, the after mark Of almost too much love, The sweet of bitter bark And burning clove. When stiff and sore and scarred I take away my hand From leaning on it hard In grass and sand, The hurt is not enough: I long for weight and strength To feel the earth as rough To all my length. “To Earthward” by Robert Frost exemplifies the concept of how attraction and love change over the years from youth to bitter love to a love that craves relief from the pain of life. Frost begins the poem’s first stanza with the lines “Love at the lips was touch/As sweet...

...Upon Jason and Medea’s encounter, Medea attempts to manipulate Jason, though communicating her grievances in an impassioned manner. Medea implores, “All this I have done for you and yet you have betrayed me, you unfeeling monster…”Ah, my poor hand, that you many times would take in yours, my poor knees so earnestly clasped in entirety, and all, all for this, you man of stone! My hopes are dashed” (Euripides 488 - 499). Seeking to cause Jason’s self - condemnation, Medea intentionally exaggerates her significance, in an attempt to emphasize the gravity of the situation. Unable to recognize Jason’s humanity, Medea’s description of “unfeeling monster” reveals his dominance in the relationship, as Medea dramifies Jason’s presence, viewing herself as subordinate. Rather than create a formidable aura, Medea softens her emotional strength, in order to magnify her weakness. While Medea utilizes emotional appeal, she connects her mental and physical trauma through diction, such as “Ah my poor hand”, dramatizing her situation, into one of despair. In an endeavor to elicit Jason’s sympathy, Medea illustrates her relationship with Jason, as...

...James Harrigan The Impact of the Asia Crisis on U.S. Industry: An Almost-Free Lunch? • The large devaluations experienced by Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia beginning in the summer of 1997 raised concerns that imports from these countries would soar while demand for U.S. exports weakened, causing U.S. industries to suffer. W • As it turned out, manufactured imports from the four countries rose only slightly, and the decline in U.S. exports was not large enough to have a significant effect on trend output for most industries. • The one exception to this pattern was the steel industry: there, sharply rising imports and falling exports led to a drop in output and prices. • Overall, the United States enjoyed an “almost-free lunch” in the wake of the Asia crisis. Cheaper imports benefited consumers, and domestic production and employment were largely unhurt. hen the Asia crisis erupted in the summer of 1997, many forecasters predicted that one effect would be an end to the economic boom in the United States. Surely, it was argued, the drop in demand for U.S. exports combined with surging import volumes would finally be enough to slow the U.S. economy. It did not happen. Indeed, the Asia crisis’ overall effects on the United States were small.1 In terms of trade flows, total manufactured imports from the Asian countries affected by a currency collapse—Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, which I will refer to as the “Crisis 4” countries—grew only...

...John Johnson Abstract: Competition between various species can differ on the amount of abundant or limited resource availability and the rate at which resources can be consumed. The competitive exclusion principle is that two organisms cannot occupy the same niche. However if two species do not completely overlap, then we see instances of coexistence between each species. However, competition variability is seen between same specie organisms and among differing species. Competition between two of the same species is known as intraspecific competition while competition seen between different species is referred to as interspecific competition. Our competitive study models the two types of competition previously stated while measuring the results to show the effects of each. Our study hoped to show that if there were no intraspecific interaction between species A then there would be no difference in the amount of survivors nor a difference in the average mass of survivors. We show how intraspecific competition is more important than interspecific competition based on the fact that each individual in a population of the same species has a higher need for limited resource availability. Introduction: The purpose of our experiment was to compare competition interactions between (interspecific) and among (intraspecific) species at various density levels. Competition can be defined as any impact of one species over another that results in an adverse reaction or impact of that...

...Principal Research Results “Energy Chain”, A New Concept in Evaluating Future Energy Conservation and Greenhouse Abatement Alternatives and Effectiveness Background The energy demand and supply system consists of many kinds of energy subsystems, for example, grid network, fuel (city gas, LPG, kerosene and so on) networks, prospective fuel (hydrogen) networks and demand-side equipments such as heat pump and cogeneration. In recent years, many evaluation methods and factors have been proposed and discussions of energy policy about innovative technology are becoming more multifaceted. In addition, as a result of specialization and segmentation of engineering science, too much discussion has been centered on particular details of efficiency, rather than on the overall needs of the energy supply and demand system. Integration of these evaluations and discussions is necessary for criteria for judgment. Critical review is always necessary to ensure that prospective technologies are really energy saving and contribute to greenhouse abatement over the whole spectrum from producing energy to end-use. Objectives To introduce a new concept of “Energy Chain” from producing energy through transmission, utilization and end-use, and to propose engineering methodology and evaluation method with examples. Principal Results 1.Proposing a New Concept of Energy Chain and Evaluation Method What the energy end-user needs is “energy benefit”. This include all kinds of benefit 1 that end-users...

...Research paper 2 Summary of U.S. Economy High unemployment and slow growth are still the dominant features of the US economy. Growth during 2011 has been at a very slow pace, and slightly improved Q4 figures just released are likely due to temporary factors. While there has been real, if modest job growth in each of the last five monthsi, much of the drop in the official unemployment rate is due to unemployed workers giving up looking for j obs. There is wide agreement that any recovery is likely to be sluggish over the next couple of years. For example, Paul Krugman writes, "...the state of the economy remains terrible... But there are reasons to think that we're finally on the (slow) road to better times."ii The recovery, at least in terms of economic output, may continue and even strengthen -- eventually. With profits restored at the expense of wages and social benefits1, business investment could continue to increase. With almost no new housing construction and a growing potential demand from multi-family households, there could be a new housing boom at some point. But there is still a strong possibility, in the immediate future, of a new financial crisis and resumption of the downward economic spiral of 2008-2009. This danger comes from: * The overhang of unpayable household debt, particularly in home mortgagesiii. * The global capitalist crisis, most immediately the European crisis, which can destabilize the US financial system, and will reduce the market for...

...Dental visit frequency A general check up (every 6-12 months) ensures your dentist detects any problems in their early stages, before they become more severe. Your dentist can suggest prevention strategies or treatment. Treatment in the early stages is generally easier and much cheaper. Every two years, all children should receive at least one course of general oral health care, including appropriate oral health promotion. Children with greater dental needs should be recalled more frequently. All adults should receive at least one course of general dental care every three years, on average. How often should I have a dental check-up? After your check-up, your dentist will recommend a date for your next visit. The time to your next check-up could be as short as three months or as long as two years (or up to one year if you're under 18). Generally, the lower your risk of dental problems, the longer you can wait before your next check-up. So people with good oral health will probably need to attend only once every 12 to 24 months, but those with more problems will need check-ups more often. Inflammation and body temperature (a) Normothermia, where set-point and actual body temperature coincide. This condition occurs during most of the time. (b) Hypothermia, where set-point may or may not be normal, but actual body temperature is below this set-point. Hypothennia can occur as a response to a drug, disease or exposure to the cold. (c) Hyperthermia, where set-point may...
