...Google Data Center 1. What is PUE, and why is it an important place to start when considering how to reduce data center power consumption? What value of PUE should data center managers strive for? Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a measure to determine the energy efficiency of a data center. It is the ratio between the energy of the system and the energy of the IT equipment in the data center. TOTAL FACILITY ENERGY PUE = --------------------------------------- IT EQUIPMENT ENERGY It is the ratio of the energy supplied to the entire Data Center and the energy consumed by the IT equipment. Whether to feed the entire plant, we need twice the minimum required to own IT equipment, we have a PUE 2. It allows to calculate the efficiency of the power supply and cooling IT equipment.. A PUE of 2.0 means that for every watt of IT power, an additional watt is consumed to cool and distributes power to the IT equipment. A PUE of 1.0 is considered ideal. A closer PUE of 1.0 means that almost all the energy is used to compute. For use PUE to be effective, should be measured often. If you occasionally makes the information will not be realistic. Ideally, measured as quickly and frequently as every second way. The higher the frequency, the more significant the results. 2. Describe the five methods recommended by Google for reducing power consumption. • Measure Pue To manage the efficiency of a data center...

...CAse Study REPORT PUE DATA CENTER EFFICIENCY MEASUREMENT Introduction One of the metrics used for measuring datacenter efficiency is Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE. PUE compares the power consumption for the entire facility with the power consumed by the core IT components—servers, storage and network equipment. This ratio illustrates how effectively the power being consumed translates into net compute capacity. Mathematically, the calculation is straightforward: For example, if one watt is being consumed by the servers and one watt is being consumed for the supporting cooling, power back up and other administrative use, the ratio would be 2.0—which is where most datacenters operate. The theoretical ideal PUE is 1.0, where the only energy consumed is for computation. The value of this metric is that it focuses on the non-value added use of power, which in a datacenter is anything that doesn’t compute or store information. PUE = Total Facility Power/ IT Equipment Power Below is an Example to calculate the PUE: Having a facility that uses 100,000 kW of total power of which 80,000 kW is used to power your IT equipment, would generate a PUE of 1.25. The 100,000 kW of total facility power divided by the 80,000 kW of IT power Total Facility Power is defined to be “power as measured at the utility meter”. IT Equipment Power is defined as “the load associated with all of the IT equipment”...

...1.1 Convergence Data centers use different network fabrics to meet the quality of service require- ments of different workload types. There are three main workload types, namely, general networking traffic, storage traffic, and inter-processor traffic. General net- working traffic is handled by Ethernet, storage traffic is handled by Fibre Channel (FC), and inter-processor traffic is handled by Infiniband (IB). Each network fabric is designed to meet the throughput and latency requirements of its workload. Gen- eral networking traffic is very mixed and includes web traffic along with email and socket applications, so there are few quality of service requirements. Storage traffic between storage devices and servers requires high I/O rates, high capacity and non- disruptive data delivery. Inter-processor traffic requires low latency. General network traffic does not have stringent latency requirements and is not drastically impacted by packet loss. Storage and inter-processor traffic have low latency requirements and require guaranteed delivery of packets. Figure 1-1 shows an example of a converged datacenter. Unfortunately there is a major down-side to having several fabrics in a single data 1Figure 1-1: Converged Datacenter center. There is a high cost to managing and maintaining the various fabrics in a data center. Having several fabrics in a single data center results in high heat generation due to additional heat generating hardware as well as reduced air...

...company implements a tier III data center. By doing this, we will yield a savings of $13 million over the next three years. Implementing a tier III data center is so important, since it will make our data management more efficient. Continuing to use a Tier I system is causes us to experience frequent down time since it is has no safeguard to an unplanned interruption in service. However, the key features of a Tier III data center provides backup in case of power outages and allows for data access when certain paths aren’t accessible. This will reduce downtime by .31%. (Uptime Institute) These multiple independent distribution paths aim to continue system operation in the case of any disruption from unplanned circumstances. They also include multiple cooling distribution paths and are concurrently maintainable (datacenters.com), meaning that system problems could be fixed while the system is still online. Installing a tier III data center will strengthen our data management. After analyzing the figures, it is the clear that we will see a quick return on our investment in a Tier III data center. Installing the data center will take a year to complete and cost us $35 million dollars. Although this might seem like a large investment, we must keep in mind that we lose $14,800 dollars for every minute of downtime. With 10 outages to our ERP system in the last year alone, minimizing the amount of downtime is crucial. After installation of the data center is finished, our company will...

...is an association of IT professionals seeking to dramatically raise the energy effi ciency of datacenters through a series of short-term and long-term proposals. This is an update to the very fi rst white paper published by the Green Grid in February 2007 called “Green Grid Metrics: Describing Data Center Power Effi ciency” to refi ne the nomenclature and intent of that paper. In that paper, The Green Grid proposed the use of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and its reciprocal, Datacenter Effi ciency (DCE) metrics, which enable datacenter operators to quickly estimate the energy effi ciency of their datacenters, compare the results against other datacenters, and determine if any energy effi ciency improvements need to be made. Since then PUE has received broad adoption in the industry but DCE has had limited success due to the misconception of what data center effi ciency really means. As a result, this paper re-affi rms the use of PUE but redefi nes its reciprocal as datacenter infrastructure effi ciency (DCiE). This refi nement will avoid much of the confusion around DCE and will now be called DCiE. In the long term, The Green Grid is developing metrics to measure data center productivity as well as effi ciency metrics for all major power-consuming subsystems in the datacenter. To promote these metrics and drive greater datacenter energy effi ciency for businesses around the world, The Green Grid will publish future white papers that provide detailed guidance on using...

...Green Data Centers: Introduction: Data center is a warehouse where we can store, manipulate, manage and disseminate the data. All the data handling equipment consume a huge amount of energy. To run a data center, it needs power or energy i.e. electricity. It has some effects on surroundingswhich can be either environmental for example CO2 emission, heat etc. or non-environmental decrease in efficiency. In order to make it efficient with both aspects environmental and non environmental there are some mechanisms so that a data center could be energy efficient and environment friendly. We can call it green data centers. Digital data grows tremendously day by day. Growth of data demands of data center for storage and management purposes. According to a report, digital data will increase approximately 44 times of current situation, which increases demand of data centers. Power consumption by data centers will increase accordingly, which causes different problems in addition with CO2 emission. Another report says that CO2 emission from data centers may exceed from any air line CO2 emission by 2020.which is an alarming situation for data centers. So, there is a need of such data centers which are energy efficient as well as environment friendly to meet the needs of present situation. Data centers which will not update their status with the need of time have risk to pay more than double for the same amount of energy requirements. Therefore, there is a need for making data centers...

...social problems does data center power consumption cause? Data center power consumption economically affects businesses and environmentally affects society. Operating costs for data centers is very expensive. In the article, "Ubiquitous Green Computing Techniques for High Demand Applications in Smart Environments," the total operating costs, concerning electricity, of all data centers within the U.S. alone exceeded 7 billion dollars in 2010 (Ayala, J., Moya, J., Risco-Martín, J., Sanchez, C., Zapater, M. 2012). The article then explains that data centers consumed 61 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006;the Environmental Protection Agency provided this statistic to the US Congress in a report from 2007 (Ayala, J., Moya, J., Risco-Martín, J., Sanchez, C., Zapater, M. 2012). With this amount of energy being consumed by data centers, it is a cause for concern; consequently, data centers have an impact on the cost of business and negatively impact the environment via carbon footprint. As the carbon footprint grows, there is a need to realign the way businesses looks at managing their data centers. Several companies including Cisco, Dell, Google, HP, IBM, and Intel have announced efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of their product offerings (Chang et al., 2012). Large technology companies are starting to understand that being environmentally friendly is good for the wallet and good public relations. Understanding how to manage and build better data centers with a green foot print...

...information and communications technology. This includes technology for computing and mobile phones. List several factors that will tend to retard or accelerate data center power consumption both globally and in the United States. * Energy is a growing concern for data centers. * Advances in server equipment technologies and increased demand for computing power have increased load densities in the computer room, which in turn has caused corresponding increases in data center power consumption. The increased energy consumption in the data center is, simply put, an increased demand for computing power. * An increased need for network storage is also a factor. The trend toward increasing load density in the computer room is an exacerbating factor for the increase in data center energy consumption. This is a result of advances in semiconductor technologies that yield smaller chips and advances in server technologies. These together allow more computer technology to be packed into smaller physical spaces. * Heat generated by computer equipment must be removed from the area in order to prevent overheating, in order to avoid over-heating, increased computer load density results in increased heat density, which becomes the challenge for the HVAC equipment design. The design choices that Google says will lower data center power consumption are: * Measuring PUE * PUE = Total Facility Energy/IT Equipment Energy * It is how effectively they delivery cooling...
