Communities with Strong Leadership This essay discusses an assumption that communities accept us for who we are. There are several ideas concerning community values and that strong leadership is needed to support this claim. Researching this idea with a book titled Remix Reading & Composing Culture. I read short essays, and a commencement address from this textbook. The passages tie into my belief of strong leadership having to be linked to the assumption that communities accept us for who we are. I explored these essays, and commencement address to support my views in a creative way. An essay titled “It Takes a Tribe” speaks of college life and fraternities. Strong leadership also entails a community to police itself and expunge those who don’t “cut the mustard.” I agree in acceptance, but not without structure, balance, and leadership. The author David Berreby writes in his essay “It takes a Tribe’ about identities “New identities are forged within the university as well, in elite groups like Skull and Bones at Yale or the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M or Michigamua at the university of Michigan: in sororities and fraternities: even in particular major and particular labs. Students don’t just attend a college they join its tribes.” (113). This is an example of needing to accept people for who they are and using leadership to shape and mold the community. Using examples of the necessity to accept new members in colleges and police those members accordingly to unlock the path to longevity. Also explaining that chosen leaders need to have compassion and belief in the next generation. Conveying the message of acceptance to the next generation of leaders as well as bolstering comradery between its members. Most importantly I explained my Christian background growing up as child had taught me to appreciate that a kind and loving person can be tremendously respected and seen as a natural leader for those values. As opposed to the notion that one must use the “carry a big stick” mentality when being a leader to gather a following in a community. I implore you to delve into the assumptions of communities.
