David Singleton Case Summary

According to Arkansas state laws mentally ill inmates can be executed, as long as medication aids them to understand that they are being executed. On February 11,2003, the state of Arkansas authorized Charles Laverne Singleton to take antipsychotic drugs to make him stable enough to execute. After further research, singleton had received five different execution dates prior to his final execution, and had been in the appeal process for about 24 years due to the fact that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. If an inmate is diagnosed with a mental illness and can be a danger to not only himself but others then medical treatment is in his best interest.
Not only because I’m a Nursing major but, Using medication to make a prisoner sane enough to execute is suitable. Mr. Singleton had been taking his medication willingly and after the medication began taking effect, singletons mental symptoms subsided. Medicine is used for treatment and there should not be made into an argument. Mr. Singleton committed murder, however his mental illness should not go untreated. The statement given by David Kaczynski "Medicine is supposed to heal people, not prepare them for execution” is biased. Further research shows that David is an …show more content…
In the Singletons case David stated, “A law that asks doctors to make people well so that the government can kill them is an absurd law” the premise here would be ‘A law that asks doctors to make people well’ followed by the conclusion ‘ So that the government can kill them is an absurd law’. Here we see that “So” is the adverb leading to the conclusion. The validity of this argument is demonstrated by inductive reasoning. This is an invalid argument because according to our book “The premises of good inductive arguments don’t demonstrate their conclusions; they support them”(Parker

Forensic Auditing

...judicature or to public discussions and debate”. Therefore, forensic accounting is generally defined as relating and applying financial facts to legal problems (Singleton and Singleton 12). Forensic accounting consists of a combination of the techniques that are used in accounting, auditing, and investigative work. The focus of this paper is on the concept of forensic auditing; however, forensic auditing cannot be fully understood without incorporating all of the facts about forensic accounting. Most situations that involve forensic auditing will deal with proposed fraudulent activities, but there are some cases that may deal with non-fraudulent activities, such as settlements of monetary disputes (“Student Accountant”). Throughout this paper, we will discuss, in detail, the profession of forensic auditing and forensic accounting in relation to fraudulent activities. What is Forensic Auditing? Forensic auditing and financial auditing are not related in any way; rather, they have their own distinct objectives that are set to achieve different goals. Forensic auditing can be defined as “the process of detecting, preventing, and correcting fraudulent activities” and focuses on establishing an environment that will help to encourage the detection and prevention of these fraudulent activities (Singleton and Singleton 14-15). Thus, forensic auditing focuses on the strength and effectiveness of a company’s internal...

A Pencil and Paper Algorithm for Solving Soduku

...A Pencil-and-Paper Algorithm for Solving Sudoku Puzzles J. F. Crook T he puzzle Sudoku has become the passion of many people the world over in the past few years. The interesting fact about Sudoku is that it is a trivial puzzle to solve. The reason it is trivial to solve is that an algorithm exists for Sudoku solutions. The algorithm is a tree-based search algorithm based on backtracking in a tree until a solution is found. If all a person needs to do is sit down at their personal computer, punch in the numbers given in the puzzle, and then watch a computer program compute the solution, we can reasonably ask why a person would bother to struggle to solve Sudoku puzzles. The reason is that people enjoy struggling with pencil and paper to work out Sudoku solutions. Herzberg and Murty (2007, p. 716) give two reasons for the enjoyment of this struggle: First, it is sufficiently difficult to pose a serious mental challenge for anyone attempting to do the puzzle. Secondly, simply by scanning rows and columns, it is easy to enter the “missing colors”, and this gives the solver some encouragement to persist. This paper develops an algorithm for solving any Sudoku puzzle by pencil and paper, especially the ones classified as diabolical. down into nine 3 × 3 subboards that do not overlap. We call these subboards boxes and number them from 1 to 9 in typewriter order beginning in the upper left-hand corner of the board, as displayed in Figure 1. The notation...

...acquired. Furthermore it explores the age factor in learning another language other than mother tongue and also attempts to answer if there is enough current evidence that can demonstrate clearly that starting young makes any real difference in achieving better language competence. Moreover, research such as on motivation in relation to the learning environment along with language exposure and attitudes will be discussed and data analysed to find out if it plays any significant role in aiding learners to achieve successful second language competence. It has been a common belief that starting young to learn a second language makes a significant difference in language learning. However, results indicate that this is not entirely true in all cases since there are further factors that affect successful second language acquisition achievement such as language exposure and motivation. Consequently, if there is not enough language exposure, this might prevent the learners from succeeding in learning the language. Clearly, those factors, motivation and exposure, seem to play a more important role in the learning process than the age factor and therefore it is extremely important to implement motivation and provide sufficient language exposure to the learner right from the start of the learning journey regardless of how old the learner is. Business Laws

...return on the shareholder’s investment in the company. As a general rule, shareholders cannot force a company to pay dividends even if it has sufficient surplus assets to do that. Burland vs Earle (1902) AC 83 is a typical example of this rule. However, in some exceptional cases, under the section 232 of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), a refusal by a profitable company to pay dividends may amount to oppressive or unfair conduct for purposes of a remedy. Therefore, shareholders may be able to force the company to declare a dividend in some circumstances where the company is lawfully able to do so and the terms of the company’s constitution indicate that it was the intention of the parties that the shareholders would be entitled to a fixed, mandatory dividend. Inspired by the article “Wambo, Peabody forced to pay dividends” published on the Newcastle Herald on 19 September 2014 and intensively conducting research about the relevant case Wambo Coal Pty Ltd vs Sumiseki Materials Co Ltd (2014) NSWCA 326, my assignment of media reflection will set light on some certain circumstances for payment of dividends and member’s rights as well as determine relations between the article and the Corporation Law. Article Summary On 17 September 2014, the New South Wales Supreme Court dismissed an appeal brought by Wambo Coal Pty Ltd (“Wambo”) against a decision of the Equity Division in which it was held that Wambo had failed to pay Sumiseki Materials Co Ltd dividends to which it was entitled under...

Scientific Status of Sociology

...Is Sociology a Science? A Classroom Exercise for Promoting Discussion* Royce A. Singleton, Jr. College of the Holy Cross *I wish to thank Dave Hummon for his helpful comments on an earlier draft of this paper. Paper presented at the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association, San Francisco, 1998. © 2005 Royce A. Singleton, Jr. Is Sociology a Science? A Classroom Exercise for Promoting Discussion Abstract Though sociology was founded on the idea that the social order is subject to scientific study, the “science” question remains controversial. By learning about this controversy, students can learn much about the discipline. This paper describes an exercise, together with data collected from six classes, that asks students to project their personal images of scientists and social scientists. These images invariably contain half-truths and misconceptions that can be used to address three related questions: (1) What is science? (2) How is sociology scientific? and (3) What are the major challenges to sociology as a science? I draw upon my own students’ responses to show how the exercise can generate a wide-ranging discussion of these issues. Is Sociology a Science? A Classroom Exercise for Promoting Discussion The question of whether sociology is a science has a long history in the discipline. It was addressed by virtually all the classical social theorists. But for some time the debate about the scientific status of sociology was muted. In the post-World...

Macro-Finance Models of Interest Rates and the Economy Glenn D. Rudebusch∗ Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Abstract During the past decade, much new research has combined elements of finance, monetary economics, and macroeconomics in order to study the relationship between the term structure of interest rates and the economy. In this survey, I describe three different strands of such interdisciplinary macro-finance term structure research. The first adds macroeconomic variables and structure to a canonical arbitrage-free finance representation of the yield curve. The second examines bond pricing and bond risk premiums in a canonical macroeconomic dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. The third develops a new class of arbitrage-free term structure models that are empirically tractable and well suited to macro-finance investigations. This article is based on a keynote lecture to the 41st annual conference of the Money, Macro, and Finance Research Group...
