...Ending Modern-Day Slavery: Using Research to Inform U.S. Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts by Maureen Q. McGough NIJ study examines the challenges facing the criminal justice system when combating human trafficking. T rafficking in persons is modernday slavery and exists in virtually every country in the world — and the United States is no exception.1 Almost 150 years after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, there are still men, women and children enslaved into labor and commercial sexual exploitation in the U.S. (see sidebar, “Understanding ModernDay Slavery,” on page 27). In recent years the worldwide human trafficking problem has attracted significant political and social attention. Awareness-raising initiatives such as the United Nation’s Blue Heart Campaign2 encourage involvement and action to fight human trafficking on a global scale. In the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign unites anti-human trafficking programs and offers resources for law enforcement and the public to help raise awareness and provide muchneeded training.3 Despite growing awareness of the issue and an influx of resources from such influential bodies as the United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations, foundations, nongovernmental organizations and the U.S. government, the field is still hampered by its inability to measure the size and scope of trafficking.4 The data used to estimate the prevalence of human trafficking in the U...

...Claim: Data: Start[ “Halima is an 11-year-old girl who clips loose threads off of Hanes underwear in a Bangladeshi factory.1 She works about eight hours a day, six days per week. She has to process 150 pairs of underwear an hour. At work she feels “very tired and exhausted,” and sometimes falls asleep standing up. She makes 53 cents a day for her efforts. Make no mistake, it is a rough life. Any decent person’s heart would go out to Halima and other child employees like her. Unfortunately, all too often, people’s emotional reaction lead them to advocate policies that will harm the very children they intend to help. Provisions against child labor are part of the International Labor Organization’s core labor standards. Anti-sweatshop groups almost universally condemn child labor and call for laws prohibiting child employment or boycotting products made with child labor.” Warrant: APA: Benjamin Powell. “A Case Against Child Labor Prohibitions” Cato Institute. ...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY-Most of us consider child labor exploitative and therefore, socially unacceptable. The study of child labor is, however, important not only for social reasons but also for economic ones. The impact of child labor on the economy works through its debilitating effect on education which is important component of human capital. The participation of children in work in home and outside is often considered to be one of the important reasons for low school enrolment in Bangladesh. An important effect of child labor is on demographic development in a country. It is generally found that poor countries with high rates of population growth have higher incidence of child work. In this study, the actual child laborers in Bangladesh are 3.2 million (ILO, report/ BBS, 2006) which age is 5-17years. About 421000 are domestic workers. Security guards are not police, they work for private companies, usually to provide 24/7 protection of assets, and occasionally, people. They are able to focus their entire effort to this task, as they are not patrolling, checking drivers for various infractions or anything else that police do. Businesses would be wide open to criminal activity without security officers, because there would be little protection from the police. Security officers are citizens, and as such, may detain someone until the...

Personnel Management Research in Agribusiness (Executive Summary) One of the challenges faced by agribusinesses in the 21st century is the attraction, motivation, and retention of sufficient and qualified labor. However, personnel management research has mostly focused on other industries. Accordingly, agribusiness managers have little to rely on, when developing personnel policies and procedures. Once a business has grown beyond the labor capacity of the immediate family, personnel management becomes an issue and practices developed for large corporations do not always scale down well to smaller businesses or may not fit the agribusiness environment. This paper reviews the foci and results of personnel...
