...Week 7 (Assignment 6) The Way to a Good Deer English November 22, 2011 Deer hunting is a very demanding hobby. The one thing that everyone must keep in mind when hunting is your safety and the safety of others. The reason for this is that you are using a weapon that can cause serious harm to you or someone, but this is not what this essay is about. I want everyone to actually learn what it takes to be a hunter. Being a hunter takes skill and understanding how deer sense things. The first thing that comes to everyone’s mind when thinking about hunting is killing Bambie. This is not the way I think, because of how I was raised. I took up hunting at an early age. I would always go with my father. So, here is what I have learned about hunting deer. You, as a hunter have got to know where the deer are. This is the easy part. Just find some good land with a water source, and good food that they eat i.e. acorns, wild persimmons trees, apples trees, corn, clover, and winter rye. Scout the land after locating these, to see if you can find there bedding areas. Finding the bedding area is the hard part. Deer in general will bed down in areas where they feel protected. Like in open areas surrounded by thick brush, or in low lying areas. After finding these good spots look for trails leading to their food, and water sources. These trails are what will make you or break you when it comes time to kill that big buck. The trail usually will lead to natural pinch points in the land. This...

...Imagine yourself driving home from a grueling day at work. Your completely exhausted, and all you can think about is how good its going to feel to get out of your work clothes and into a cozy pair of sweats. When all of a sudden, BOOM!! A deer jumps out in font of you. You hit it head on and total your car. Now let me ask you, are you for or against deer hunting? Had a hunter had a chance to get that deer earlier, you could have been home already and not have to worry about finding a new car. The greatest benefit to deer hunting is population control. We as humans, have pretty much eliminated the deer's natural predators. If we didn't hunt to keep their numbers down, then the deer population would grow uncontrollably. Eventually ending the species due to starvation and disease. So, in a way, we are actually saving a species by hunting them. And believe me when I say that it's better, and cheaper, to hit them with an arrow or a bullet than with your car. In addition to population control, hunting is also great exerciser. Not only for the body, but for the mind as well. It gets you reacquainted with the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Things that have all been but forgotten due to the luxury of city life. It gives guys a chance to get away and be guys. No wives or girlfriends around to tell them they can't cuss, spit, grunt, or scratch. Now I know these animal rights activists are saying that hunting and killing animals is cruel. They say that hunters...

...There are probably people out there that think hunters can just go out in the woods and kill any amount of deer or animal at any time but that isn't true whatsoever. Licking County is classified as a three deer county and based on the rules from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (2017) “No more than three deer may be taken from a three deer county during the 2017-2018 deer hunting season” (Para 4). Hunters are not allowed to hunt in the night hours when it is dark they have to hunt from sunrise to sunset. In some counties, antlerless permits are able to be purchased however in licking county an antlerless permit cannot be purchased. For those who don't know an antlerless permit as stated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (2017) “Antlerless deer permit means: antlerless deer permit, youth antlerless deer permit, senior antlerless deer permit, free disabled veteran antlerless deer permit, or a free senior antlerless deer permit” (para 3). Here in Licking County, we are only an either-sex deer permit county which means we can buy three permits that can be used to tag either a buck or a doe. As I stated there are many rules and regulations that restrict a hunter when he...

...in front of us a deer started trotting our way on the same trail. I froze as my heart felt as heavy as a brick. It smelt like a cold autumn day. The leaves were crunchy and the air was crisp and cool. We had about 100 yards to get to my stand and I heard a deer blow at us. Whoosh! Whoosh! I knew then that some deer in the area would know we were there. I climbed in my tree stand and I saw a doe in the corn field that I was sitting on. I ranged the deer with my range...

...more enthusiastic about that day then I was until I realize “today is deer hunting day!” I suddenly jump for joy until my dad tells me to be quieter because everyone is asleep. Whoops… I think to myself as I start layering up on clothes. My dad warned me yesterday that it would be cold which I realized but didn't know until I stepped outside. Once I get back in the house I grab a package of fruit snacks and powerade and head to the truck. On the way there I ask, “do you think were going to get a deer?” He replies “ I hope so.” Then that gets me thinking, I wonder if...

...------------------------------------------------- Balabac Mouse Deer ------------------------------------------------- Submitted to: Mr. John Lemuel Noche Submitted by: Kim N. Fabia, BSBio3 August 13, 2015 Balabac Mouse Deer April 6, 2008 General Description The small, Balabac mouse deer or Chevrotain does not belong to Family Cervidae, the true deer family, but is a member of the Chevrotain family. Chevrotain is a French word meaning “little goat”. When meat is cooked with “ogsom”, a fruit used to remove the characteristic odor of the mouse deer, the natives found it delicious. Its consumption by the locals caused endangerment to the population. Physical Characteristics Balabac mouse deer are ruminants without horns with small canines oriented sideways. They have horizontally-oriented pupil adapted to night activity. The body is generally covered with brown fur, with blotches of dark-brown and white bands at the throat. The ears stand erect with white undersides. Habitat The above mouse deer was captured near the shore when dogs cornered it. It is however difficult to find during the day. It is known to occur in dense areas of primary as well as secondary forests. At night, they could be detected using a flashlight because their eyes shine brightly. They may also be encountered along roads bound by thick forests. A native recounted that the mouse deer lives in its burrows sometimes protected by pythons which co-inhabit with it. When disturbed, the mouse deer takes refuge in its burrow while...

...Challenges Facing Whitetail Deer Throughout the Midwest, whitetail deer hunting has been a time-honored tradition for well over a century. Every November 15th, the opening day of the firearm season, family bonds are renewed as grandfathers, fathers, and sons hit the woods. White-tailed deer have been a valuable resource dating back to the Native Americans who hunted them long before settlers came to the area. Back then, however, the population was abundant compared to the scarcity that is facing the herd in the twenty first century. As our modern day world changes, so do the deer; yet people are still oblivious to the problems that have arisen. Every year, the whitetail deer herd encounters new challenges that range from disease to weather to predators; nevertheless, the herd has hope in the form of the Department of Natural Resources as it works to prevent these problems in the future. One of the main areas of danger that faces the population of whitetails is in the form of disease. The most common known disease discovered in the Midwest is Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The disease became prominent when a mule deer in Colorado contracted the disease in 1967. Since then, it has spread eastward into Midwestern states (Carmody). It is by far the most fatal...

In 1997 the Virginia Department Of Transportation recorded around 600 crashes between vehicles and deer. Then in 1998 it jumped up to 4000. insurance and law enforcement officials said the actual car deer collisions could be somewhere between 10 and 20 thousand in the United States. Insurance industry estimates there are half a million car deer accidents annually. The average cost an insurance company pays per claim is 2000. ...My first deer hunt. I was a young man about 13 years old when I got the opportunity to go deer hunting for the first time. I remember it even though it was long time ago. I remember getting up really early due to the long ride to place where we was going to hunt. It took us approximately an hour to get to our destination. Once we arrived I remember thinking, that we was in the middle of nowhere and I hoped we did not get lost. As a young man you automatically think that you are gonna kill a deer and go home in no time at all. I was bad wrong the first day we did not see a deer at all. I was disappointed like any young person would be. As we all have been young and know that after an hour of sitting outside in the cold, you either are ready...

...2014 The Effect of Deer Overpopulation on the Environment White-tailed deer have increased dramatically in population during the last two decades due to the combination of several factors. With the increase in population of deer, many changes have occurred to the habitat of the deer which has caused changes to the habitat of other species, as well. These changes cause concern regarding the impact the overpopulation has on the environment and other species of animals. There is also an increased human health and safety issue with the increase of deer. Deer overpopulation is causing many concerns, including human health and safety concerns, ecological impacts, and economic losses. The human health and safety issues associated with deer are primarily deer-vehicle collisions and transmission of Lyme disease. “It is estimated that 29,000 people are injured and 211 lose their lives annually in deer-vehicle collisions in the United States.” (Curtis) This number continues to rise as the overpopulation of deer continues to increase. Deer are coming out of the woods for food and water which causes an increase in the number of deer in human populated areas and highways. Deer-vehicle collisions is also one of the many economic losses that is associated with the overpopulation of deer. The expense of vehicle repairs and, sometimes, medical bills, due to vehicle-deer collisions is very high. There is also the human health and safety issue associated with the deer and the concern of...

...whether you are for or against it. So why not produce extra animals, such as deer, to keep the populations up? Doris Lin wrote an article called “Hunting isn’t the Answer to Animal ‘Pests.” When, in fact, it’s not the entire answer but it is part of the solution. She states that if we just build more fences and stop planting foliage that the deer and bear like, that the animals will stop being “pests.” This is NOT the solution. She also makes the point that we are over producing these animals just so that people can go on with their normal hunting habits. Only her view of it all is that it’s wrong. In my opinion the fact that we are producing more animals is a very smart thing to do. Even though there are many...
