...Spirit Possession in the Tale of Genji ASH 3930 The Japanese international classic, The Tale of Genji, is highly esteemed because it is an authentic narrative of Heian imperial court life. The novel also contains highly dramatic scenes of spirit possession. It is a book of, pain, love, and spirituality. Historians’ continuously researching ancient civilizations with polygynous societies, have shown that it was very common for a female to suffer from spirit possession. Some believe that these women were showing extreme courage rather than being disgraced by the male species. It is supposed that the possessed women knowingly became absorbed in a trance in order to manipulate their authoritarians into giving them their full consideration and reverence. This in turn changed traditional gender roles, and contradicted the usual code of character so that women could briefly have jurisdiction over their men. Japan’s present society still recognizes these possessions today. You should also conclude that in a classical civilization, vices such as spirit possession were repeatedly used as a way to articulate any extreme issues amongst men. Specifically, in the culture of the Genji, spirit possession was the only way women could confidently express their true feelings regardless of the adversity they faced as a result of femininity. Unfortunately, women are expected to be gentle wives. “It is very foolish for a woman to let a little dalliance upset her so much that she shows her resentment...

...the well. Lawson found a large fragmentation of bone. Both Lawson and the staff at Bobby Mackey's were unsure what this bone was so they sent it to a lab to get tested, the results were shocking. The bone fragment belonged to a female (Ghost Adventures). Specifically, the skull. What was once simply activity such as doors shutting and footsteps turned into scratching, pushing and demonic possession. Carl Lawson was soon possessed by a demon. It isn’t uncommon for paranormal activity to start or take a dark turn after the discovery of some specific artifact or human remains. Mr. Mackey and his staff noticed Carl's strange behavior, and they decided to call a Pastor. The moment the pastor stepped in the building Carl ran up to him and had his hands wrapped around the pastor’s throat. Carl had to be restrained and the exorcism took over six hours to complete. It isn’t uncommon for demonic possessions to take place in areas in which suicides or tragic deaths have occurred. Also, areas where criminals have died are known to cause possessions as well (Betty, 2005, p.15). It is possible that this demonic entity was a criminal, maybe even Alonzo Walling or Scott Jackson. There are many eyewitness documents of the Exorcism taking place and there even is video that exists, after watching the video for a few brief moments, I had the chills and immediately had to close it. Unfortunately, Carl Lawson recently passed away on January 27, 2012. Janet Mackey, Bobby’s wife was very skeptical...

...Rakiiya Hearst December 3, 2012 X155 Ghost Do Exist A ghost is generally understood to be the disembodied spirit or soul of a once-living person. I do believe ghost exist. I’ve had many experiences with ghosts and hearing others tell their experiences, just makes me believe even more. I also believe that ghosts are real because of the research me and my sister have been doing since I started believing. There was a time when I was a non-believer and didn’t think ghost existed. My youngest sister is so fascinated with ghosts and pseudoscience. We share rooms, so when she watches TV (SyFy and Paranormal shows/movies) I have no choice but to watch it. That’s how I became a believer. It’s almost as if once you watch it or read about ghosts, you start having thoughts and strange things began happening. I start seeing things out the corner of my eye or even hearing the floor creak when I was home alone and there was no wind blowing (when it’s windy outside sometimes the wood on my house will creak). Most people believe that’s your mind playing tricks on you. But I believe that once you start believing in ghost then they’ll try to reach out to you and get your attention. One time, I was at home with my friend and I left my phone upstairs, on the bathroom sink. I was actually getting ready to flat iron my hair, but I went downstairs with my friend to keep her company while the curlers was heating up. We were sitting on the couch watching Punk’d on MTV. All of a sudden, we...

...Almost all human beings have believed the spiritual existence do exist and that somehow interact with people in their daily life. The common beliefs that there is another world where souls, spirits, demons and evil spirits dwelt the same way with the mortal people. Often they were described to be playful, silly but sometimes they cause illnesses and possess people. In the paper authored by Violet Villaroman-Bautista entitled Possession: Where Psychology, Culture and Theology Interface, she presented how psychologist should first understand how these beliefs developed within a culture and how they can affect the treatment of people with psychological disorders. The idea that spirits can enter and control a person is as old as the civilization and the biblical histories in which it’s present in diverse but almost all cultures. Since then, from ancient people to these day people often carried the beliefs that possession is something of a demon’s doing and not by mental abnormalities. This has always been a common explanation to people who are not aware of other possible account for such issues in possession. The ancient beliefs in spirits and souls leads to the belief of exorcism as a treatment for mental illness. Today many religions, churches, and folk healer accepts the reality of sprit possession and more importantly supported by the Roman Catholic Church. The author being a Christian as well as a psychologist find herself constrained to evaluate cases of possession. Nevertheless...

...with them. No one though has the same demon. Some people have smaller demons and others have bigger demons that can a lot of problems in a person’s life. Demons are spirits that are to be messed around with. Demons are evil spirits that want to hurt, torture, and control you as much as they can until there is nothing anyone can do. Good thing for believers in Christ as long as we got Him on are side anything is possible no matter what. It is funny how the one thing we are scared of (demons) is scared of the God Christians worship (Jesus Christ). Even with numerous accounts of demon possession in the world and movie producers constantly making movies about demonic possession many people still do not believe demons exist. In today’s society demonic possession is looked at in two ways. In the religious side they look for demonic possession and usually treat it with an exorcism using a variety of tools, but the scientific side looks at demons as non-existent and tell the patient the certain disease they are plagued with and prescribe them with medication. Nobody knows one- hundred percent if demons do or do not exist, but today might help you decide whether or not they are real. What are demons you say? Demons are evil spirits that want to hurt God and his people as much as possible; throughout the biblical text demons are referred to as fallen angels (Slick). Demons do not have a physical form...

...Exorcism: Beliefs and Practices Introduction Exorcism, by definition, is ‘the expulsion or attempted expulsion of an evil spirit from a person or place’ (Dictionary.com). For this research paper, I have chosen to research exorcism and the beliefs, history and practices that go along with it. This is a topic that has always interested and been fascinating to me. There have been numerous movies, documentaries, and stories written and performed relating to exorcism- both claiming to be true and fictional- and it was a topic I was deeply curious to learn more about. This paper will explore the history and beliefs of exorcism and will also explore the role of the exorcist, which is the person who is intended to rid the affected of their demon(s) (Toner). History Exorcism, by definition and history is a strictly religious act or rite. It has strongly been related to the Catholic Church and Christian ceremonies and rituals. However, since there is the matter of demons and non-living beings involved, many consider exorcism to be a very superstitious belief as well and not necessarily just a religious one. In addition, there is history of exorcism present in Jewish tradition, ethnic religion and in the New Testament. Many believed (and still believe) that there was magic and superstition present during early exorcisms; however, this was not the case in the early years of exorcisms. According to a religious research article by Patrick Toner, “As is clear from testimonies referred...

...Ali Lawrence Professor White English 101 Paper 3 2nd April, 2012 Sleep Paralysis For many centuries, sleep paralysis has affected many people across the world, mostly young adults. Strange demonic forces and evil spirits seek out and torment individuals for reasons beyond imagination. Many cultures have different names for these entities, In the Malaysian culture they are known as demonic figures, the Ethiopian culture refers to them as some sort of evil spirit, and in the Chinese culture they are known as ghosts pressing down on the body. Because here in the United States, we have grown weary of the presence of demons, and demonic spirits, we tend to dismiss the beliefs of other cultures. This is not the case, because we can learn a lot from other cultures and their beliefs about sleep paralysis. According to Sleepparalysis.com, there are many reasons for this strange phenomenon, which can lead to sleep paralysis. Some causes and attacks, have been related to individuals opening doors to these evil spirits. Some ways of doing this, are by engaging in some sort of occult practices such as, tarot card readings, Ouija boards and channeling or meditation. There are many other ways that can open doors to these nightmares, some of them in which the person had no control of. For instance, it can be generational, if ones parents or grandparents have been involved in heavy occult rituals. This could be a father who has been initiated into the high Masonic arts...

...Since ancient ages, a lot has been talked about the matter of communication between the two sexes. Do men and women speak differently, or do they speak alike? Do men speak to command attention and authority? Are women more likely to speak in a more deferential tone? Are there any notable differences in the speaking styles of women and men? In antiquity, the answer was a simple and fascinating ‘yes’. In his essay “Sex Differences”, Ronald Macaulay believes there is no differences as such that affects language acquisition, although social factors interfere in the way they both talk. In contrast, Janet Holmes expresses in her essay “Women talk too much” that language is biased because it is men who have positions of power and seek authority, who judges when talk is too much, when its appropriate, and that women assert themselves less when speech is more valued. As we progress, we shall examine more closely their positions and expose the nature of their claims. In fact, the use and style in language has no bearing on one’s gender. The way one communicates with others has much to do with personal life experiences, self-image, and the overall make up of our personality and character. According to Macaulay, women are more straightforward and use the language in a simpler manner while men tend to be more creative. First of all, men are associated with toughness and aggression, sometimes boldness whereas women are associated with sweetness, being innocent, shy and loyal. These...

...Deloitte & Touches’ revolutionary implementation of Women’s Initiative, serves as one of the most transformational changes any company has ever seen. Deloitte thought women were leaving their company in order to fulfill their wifely and motherly duties. The truth of the matter is they left due to not being considered for partnership roles. When CEO Mike Cook at the time realized the significant impact it was having on the business, he implemented a two day intensive workshop for “the Retention and Advancement of Women”. Implementing Women’s Initiative led to a solid foundation surrounded by an environment full of support and development of not just women but men as well. In reading the Women’s Initiative Annual report I felt that women as buyers (WAB) serve as an advancement towards this movement. Currently women account for 85% of all consumer purchases. Deloitte recognized that women executives within the marketplace were increasing. Currently Deloitte is offering a WAB workshop to its professionals in order to better understand the way women process there purchasing decisions. Such examples of how women provided a trusting relationship amongst their clients by providing personal life stories and their way of paying close attention to detail. The WAB has provided other lessons as well for both men and women: 1. Women have a tendency to sit “ face to face” where are men seat beside themselves and consider their mail client “ Right-hand man” 2. Women...

...In her article “Between the Sexes, A Great Divide”, Anna Quindlen shows us the differences between the genders, and the divide that exists between them, which starts from the first high school dance, where boys and girls are far away from each other, and all the game is about who is going to do the first move. I mainly agree with Quindlen, but there are some points that I have a different opinion, such as the conclusion is which the writer comes. Only one thing is certain• there are not only differences between men and women, but there are also between ages. The first thing I agree with, is that this gap between the genders is something real. Children, from young age, try all the time to come closer to the other gender, and most of the times, without a good result. It is not the fact that they cannot communicate, but the fact that they are so afraid to make the first move, that they end up saying irrelevant things, which do not help the conversation. The writers says that all of us have the memory of “the first boy-girl” party, in which memory there are boys on one side, and girls on the other. That it totally true. Once I read it, the memory came to my mind very clearly. We all had the same experience in our life, and there are always the shy people, and the braver to make the first move. And in fact, children who used to approach the other gender, had the greater acceptance. So, it is demonstrated that there are nothing to be afraid of the relationships with the other gender...

Improvement is the key subject in collaborating as a group or team. • How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration? Some aspects in diversity that may affect collaboration are language barriers. Some people that do not speak the English language and write it as well as others might feel intimated. Being multicultural is one that might cause others to look at a person with a judgmental view. Even though we should not react in a racial way, there are still a lot of people that discriminate due to their race, sexual preferences, gender and even height. ...In the satire of the sexes, Egalia’s Daughters by Gerd Brantenberg, there is put forth a society different from which has ever been present in modern times. This would be a society where women were at the forefront and did the decision making, worked and held governmental positions. The men were portrayed in the way females live in present society, though it was often exaggerated to make that point. Men were dominated and ruled by women and had to do their bidding and cook for them and take care of the children, so on and so forth. By taking a hard look at how sexuality is imagined and experienced on all analytical levels and picking apart the social construction of gender in Egalia’s Daughters, society itself in the present can start to be unraveled as well. What is found in this book can transfer over to a point and parallel itself with present experiences of women and their struggle for equality, recognition and acknowledgement. In order to fully analyze the sexes in this book, the micro, meso and macro levels need to be looked at individually to observe where sexuality is imagined and experienced by both genders. On the micro level, the sexes are very different from one another in this book. The women are expected to be large in weight and wear pants and shirts. The men are often wearing skirts and blouses with a contraption called a peho which holds their genitals in place. This can be compared with a bra to women in society today. When Patronius Bram has to buy his first...
