...Fundamentals of Speech John Kastner, Instructor Speech #1 Demonstrative Speech Prepare a 4-6 minute Demonstrative Speech. Visual aids are recommended for this speech. Remember all of the different types of visual aids so that you might use more creativity. You can use charts or graphs that show the popularity of your topic, images that show various ways to make it, videos or cartoons that show it in use, etc. In addition to your props, power point slides that show lists of ingredients, charts, and other images are helpful. As with all of your speeches, you must turn in a typed outline at the time that you deliver your speech. Objectives: You will deliver a 4 - 6 minute speech that informs your audience about how to do something. The explanation should be clear and concise. You need to actually demonstrate what you are explaining as you explain it. If, for instance, you are going to tell us how to make a cake, then you really need to bring the ingredients, really mix them together, really grease the pan and really pour the batter into the pan. Obviously, you can't bring an oven and bake the cake, but do all the steps that you can in baking a cake and then bring in the final product to show us what it should look like when finished. We should be able to do whatever it is you are demonstrating to us following your speech. Part of your grade for this speech will be based on whether you have demonstrated so clearly that we could turn around and do it...

...CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development and is a means of supporting people in the workplace to understand more about the environment in which they work, the job they do and how to do it better. As an initiative, CPD was largely unknown until at least the 1960s. Professional bodies only started to take systematic steps to ensure their members continue their development on an ongoing basis within the last ten to fifteen years of the twentieth century. Recognition of the need for CPD is now well-established at least among the majority of professional bodies. CPD is an ongoing process throughout our working lives. The concept of CPD both generically and within HR is very important as it can be part of an individual’s personal ambition to be a better practitioner, enhance his/her career prospects or to simply feel more confident about their work and make it more personally fulfilling. The CIPD HR Profession Map is a very useful tool giving a wide-ranging vision of how HR can add value to any organisation it operates within. It covers the types of skills, behaviours and knowledge that HR people require in order to become a successful HR professional. It is useful in identifying areas that may need to be developed. What the HR Profession Map Covers: Professional areas (2 core and 1 other): Strategy, insights and solutions: Fosters legitimate insights and solutions, which aid understanding in the business and how it works (or should work), and allows well-defined...

...An essay on age In this essay I will consider the social, economic and political factors of age. I really, really like age. Given that its influence pervades our society, spasmodically it returns to create a new passion amongst those who study its history. Inevitably age is often misunderstood by those politicaly minded individuals living in the past, who just don't like that sort of thing. With the primary aim of demonstrating my considerable intellect I will now demonstrate the complexity of the many faceted issue that is age. Social Factors Society is a simple word with a very complex definition. Upon Peter Pinkleton-PishPosh's return to Britain he remarked 'class will refelect the inner hero' [1], he must have been referning to age. While deviating from the norm will always cause unrest amongst ones peers, age provides standards by which we may judge our selves. Of paramount importance to any study of age within its context, is understanding the ideals of society. It is intrinsically linked to adolescent inner acclimatisation. Economic Factors Increasingly economic growth and innovation are being attributed to age. We will begin by looking at the Watkis-Teeth-Pulling model, as is standard in this case. Transport Costs age It is apparent from the graph that the influence of age is strong. What is the secret to its strength? Seemingly transport costs will continue to follow age for the foreseeable future. In the light of this free trade must be examined...

...1985-1990 1. In the research paper “The Student Divestment Movement in the United States and Tactical Diffusion: The Shantytown Protest”, by Sarah A. Soule of the University of Arizona, the focus was on a relatively recent phenomenon of how a single social movement organization could influence other organizations directly or indirectly. It all started in 1985 when news reports from South Africa swamped U.S. newspapers about their government-ordered beatings and shootings of peaceful demonstrators. These events in South Africa resulted in eleven thousand deaths due, in part, to the rising levels of political violence which stretched over a five year period. A concern about repression of political activism in South Africa sparked activist demonstrations in the U.S which spilled on to college campuses. One of the first protests took place in 1985 with a blockade of Hamilton Hall at Columbia University. The importance of the protest was that it got a lot of media coverage which advertised new protest tactics all over the U.S. Shortly after, the number of protests all over the U.S. against apartheid rose sharply, starting at Princeton then to the University of California Santa Cruz, Harvard, University of Iowa, and most importantly, sparking the innovative tactics practiced at Cornell University. At Cornell the students altered the normal sit-ins or camp-ins to the construction of shacks made from wood, tar paper, and plastics. Again, media attention gave these events great publicity...

...Martin Luther King JR. Martin Luther King JR was born on January 15, 1929 and, died on April 4, 1968. He was best known for being a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. As, a Baptist leader, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. His “I have a Dream” speech is one of the most popular and widely known speeches. He was an icon at a time were segregation in America was at its peak. He believed that all people were created equal. He worked towards equality and organizing non-violent protests and marches. A lot of the times the towns own firemen would come, and spray the protesters like wild animals. On a few occasions Martin Luther King JR was arrested for protesting. He still kept doing them. Martin Luther King believed that it's never correct to use violence because it is not God's will and only expresses anger and hatred. He received part of this inspiration by an Indian reformer Mahatma-Gandhi. He believed in praying for those who persecute them and asking for forgiveness for them. In the summer of 2011 King got what most people believe he deserved his own memorial in Washington DC. To this day King is used in schools system to show why race doesn’t matter; it is the inside that counts. Martin Luther King Jr. has proved himself to be a great visionary and changed the world due to his actions. He pushed and pushed, and eventually saw the hearts of his fellow man slowly change. Sadly, like so many great men before him he passed away before...

...One of the major news stories in New England last year was the saga surrounding regional supermarket chain, Market Basket. A family feud over control of the company led to the firing of the company’s president; non-unionized employees protesting that firing, encouraging customers to shop elsewhere and in some cases, skipping work altogether; aisles void of food and products in Market Baskets all over New England; previously loyal customers refusing to shop at Market Basket and taping their receipts from other supermarkets on Market Basket store windows; and Market Basket losing millions of dollars per day. The Arthur S. side of the family holds 49.5% of the company, while the Arthur T. side holds 50.5%. But the company has a Board of Directors that includes a number of family members, as well as three non-family members. In 2008, a board member on the Arthur S. side of the family “switched sides” and voted with Arthur T., which allowed him to win a board election and become president of the company. In 2013, that same family member switched voting sides again, giving Arthur S. and his family control of the board. Then in 2014, Arthur S. and the board fired Arthur T., replacing him with two co-CEOs, James Gooch and Felicia Thornton. Market Basket employees felt a certain loyalty to Arthur T. and many cited his generous treatment of workers. They were worried that the new leaderships would sell the chain to another business, cut wages and benefits, or otherwise demolish the...

...In the reading “Date with a Revolution,” the author tells us about the peaceful demonstrations that took place in Egypt this past January. Mansoura Ez-Eldin tells how it frustrated him at first that the demonstration had been organized on Twitter and Facebook, by young people who previously had not been politically active. This was confusing to him how the call out on Twitter and Facebook had “successfully rallied hundreds of thousands to the cause.” Mansoura Ez-Eldin gives a very good introductory sentence as well as telling us how important his story is by sharing with us a small snippet of his experience in the demonstration. Mansoura Ez-Eldin did not seem to use much research in these writing. This was more a personal accounting of his experience during the demonstration. Mansoura Ez-Eldin does tell of his recollection on what happened in the “jasmine revolution” in Tunisia. Mansoura Ez-Eldin also tells of personal accounts of information shared with him by friends in different Egyptian cities. Mansoura Ez-Eldin does not use direct citations in the essay. The author told this story with a great deal of emotion and detail of what was happening. He told it with such detail that we felt like we were right there with him. The author’s descriptions were very vivid and clear that an alternative or contradictory viewpoint might have changed the point the author was trying to make. The essay ended with a strong personal statement that If people do nothing...

...UK RIOTS 2011 Between the 6th and 11th of August 2011 thousands of people rioted in cities across England participating in looting, arson and vandalism. The rioting occurred after a peaceful demonstration on the 4th of August in Tottenham over the death of local 29-year-old father of four Mark Duggan who was a victim of a still-unresolved shooting by the police. 1. Text 1 “Experts Cite Underlying Causes for UK Riots” is a news report by Al Pessin published on Voice of America website the 10th of August 2011. The report consists of people giving an estimate of the causes for the UK riots. The inhabitants of London believe at first sight the riots are a response in reaction to lack of jobs and cuts in government services following a feeling of despondency and hopelessness. First hand witnesses reports that such is not the case. Chris Hamnett works as a geography professor at King’s College London. He explains the hectic restlessness in London by saying the inhabitants of African and Caribbean origin are more likely to participate in demonstrations than other Britons judged by their economic -, social – and cultural capital. He points out the connection between these ethnic groups and their criminal records. Hamnett partly agrees with Basani Mabyalane neighboring and Erika Lopez, who is a member of HYPE. They are convinced, that the looting is a result of boredom and poor empowering of young people. Prime Minister David Cameron blames the involved and cites the schools and...

...Non-violent direct action was based on the premise that proving the violence came from anti-Civil Rights protesters would benefit the progression of the movement. This type of protest stemmed from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s personal beliefs, and were practiced beginning in the sit-ins in the 1960s (Eyes on the Prize). Students would go limp when attacked and put their hands up to show they were not fighting back. This caught the attention of the media and news spread worldwide that only white people were fighting minority groups. King also organized the Montgomery Bus Boycotts in 1955 following the arrest of Rosa Parks (Eyes on the Prize). This was a peaceful boycott in which those who used the bus system would instead walk or use carpools and taxis. Yet again this brought white people to spew hatred towards those who did this and violently react against them. Non-violence was challenged by groups that believed in Black Nationalism. This idea was led by Malcolm X, who supported his beliefs by saying no conflict in the past was solved through peace. In his words, “A revolution is bloody. Revolution is hostile. Revolution knows no compromise.” (Malcolm X v. MLK lesson). His words spurred groups of young adults to follow his words and condemn white racism. MLK disliked his use of violence, saying, “...this movement is made up of people who have lost faith in America… and who have concluded that the white man is an incorrigible ‘devil.’” (Malcolm X v. MLK lesson). Both sides, however...

...Peaceful resistance to laws, i believe can be a positive and negative impact on a free society. It can be both, because they can be shown in different perspectives. If there was a friendly riot in front of the capital building protesting the new parking lot being built on a historic site, they could simply hold up signs and sit on the steps, but some peaceful resistance can turn into violence depending the situation. If they were asked to leave quietly, they might have some leave and others that'll stay and protest louder and in a disrespectful way. This could leave to violence real fast. Cops could get involved, weapons could be used, and words might be said that shouldn’t have been. This would show the world that sometimes even peaceful resistance can be negative, depending on the people you bring along to do so. If someone does not like something that has been said, they could ignore it, but that’ll just build up hate in that person and later on that hate would spread and build a violent argument, then at that point people would see no point in peaceful resistance because it isn’t fair to some, and to others they might see that it doesn’t work. On the other hand, it could be positive. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in peace and he got it. He marched to show civil rights and peace to all. Some might take it as a group of people bombarding others with beliefs that not all will share. But that is shown to be the right thing to do. No one gets hurt but the words of people that...

...Many people have heard of what’s been going on for the past two months on Wall Street, but do they know that they’re technically apart of this protest? Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is an evolving succession of demonstrations in New York City taking place in Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street financial district. The protests were introduced by the Canadian activist group Adbusters which mainly protests social and economic inequality, corporate greed, corruption and influence over government and lobbyists. The protesters’ trademark, “We are the 99%”, refers to the difference in wealth and income growth in the U.S. between the richest 1% and the remainder of the public. In the middle of 2011, the Canadian-based Adbusters Foundation, suggested an amicable occupation of Wall Street to formally complain about the corporate weight on our democracy, focus on a growing imbalance in wealth, and the vacancy of legal consequences behind the recent global financial dilemma. Senior editor of Adbusters said it was without delay adopted by all the people of the world. Adbuster’s website claims that from their “one simple demand—a presidential commission to separate money from politics—we start setting the agenda for a new America.” They publicized the event with a poster presenting a dancer on top Wall Street’s famous Charging Bull statue. The internet group Anonymous promoted that its followers take part in the protests, asking participants to overflow lower Manhattan, prepare tents and kitchens...
