The author of article 2-5 on page 97 of our text, Dennis J. Moberg addresses three problems that contribute to good people doing bad things. There are many corporate misdeeds but not always conducted by a bad person. A large number of unethical acts in business are the likely result of shortcomings rather than selfishness and greed. The three problems that Dennis J. Moberg identifies that have led to many unethical acts are scripts, distractions, and moral exclusion.
A script is a psychological term that refers to the procedures that experience tells us to use when you are in specific situations. This may also be identified as a mussel memory. A good example of this would be when someone informs you of the passing of his or her relative or good friend. In this situation without thinking, we have a set response of “I am sorry for your loss”. This script is used for a close friend and to someone that you …show more content…
Distraction is the mindless action that we find people engaging in when focused on a task. The best example of this would be when you are focused on the task of getting to work on time for an important meeting. When you are arrive at work and cannot provide the details of your drive to work. The distraction on the current task in this case driving to work is due to a greater focus on the meeting.
The last area that Dennis J. Moberg addresses in this article that leads to unethical acts in business is moral exclusion. Moral exclusion occurs when a dominant group views their own group to be superior to others. This leads to belittling, marginalizing, excluding, and even dehumanizing those that do not belong to the dominant group. This last problem seems to bring out the worst in good people.
