...For my final paper I chose Fargo due to the fact that film noir was my favorite genre of films that I was introduced to in this class and it has amazing reviews, but I had never seen it. First off I love how the film opens "the following story is based on real events" disclaimer, it sets the viewer up to think they are about to see a powerful drama, then it catches them off-guard with a black sort of morbid comedy. Even from there, the opening shot shows the car driving down a dark empty road accompanied by some very appropriate music to makes us believe that it’s going to be a high action or suspenseful film, but the real colors of the movie quickly start to show through. This film changes an ordinary, Midwestern town upside down with a triple homicide and makes for a movie that can have the audience questioning their faith in humanity. I think that this film fits into the ordinary film noir genre, but turns it into a comedy/high drama, of Jerry’s despicable greed and his search of his idea of the “American Dream”. Slightly off subject, as far as “typical” noir films go I was surprised at the high saturation of light they used in this film even during very dark times/situations. I feel like this film removes the cliche of a typical police investigator. Marge is not the typical maverick cop we see in most investigative films, but a woman that is happily married to possibly the most painfully boring human being on earth, but a good husband, Norm. Marge’s...

...SOCIETAL ENVIRONMENT Sequel Installment Although Pixar Animation Studios have resisted the temptation in making instalments among their films, producers have failed to live up to their stand. Toy Story, the ground breaking, blockbuster animated film launched in 1995, took nearly four years to finally have its sequel, the Toy Story 2 in 1999. Eleven years after the second instalment, Toy Story launched its third film in the series, the Toy Story 3 in 2010. All three sequels have made it to the lime light as one of the top grossing films in the history of animated films. Aside from the Toy Story movies, Disney-Pixar have also produced a number of successful installment movies like Cars, Monsters Inc., and the upcoming sequel of Finding Nemo (Finding Dory). In the course of time, film instalments have been an indication of opportunity to the animation company. More installments, means another profit generating loop for Pixar and an opportunity of growth to the company’s brand awareness to the general audience. Genre Variations & Character Diversity Pixar have been the Holy Grail of computer generated imagery films, and since its commencement in 1975, it has been known to produce quality child and family oriented pictures. Movies like Wall E, Toy Story, Cars, Ratatouille, and other films have been positioned to distinct male characters. In the film industry, variations in genres and diversity in character creation are crucial to maintain interest among audiences...

...Ch r i s t i n e Ro e ll Intercultural Training with Films ilms are a great medium to use not only to practice English, but also to facilitate intercultural learning. Today English is a global language spoken by people from many countries and cultural backgrounds. Since culture greatly impacts communication, it is helpful for teachers to introduce lessons and activities that reveal how different dialects, forms of address, customs, taboos, and other cultural elements influence interaction among different groups. Numerous films contain excellent examples of intercultural communication and are highly useful resources for teachers. Additional reasons for teachers to incorporate films in class and encourage their students to watch movies in English include: • Films combine pleasure and learning by telling a story in a way that captures and holds the viewer’s interest. • Films simultaneously address different senses and cognitive channels. For example, spoken language is supported by visual elements that make it easier for students to understand the dialogues and the plot. • Students are exposed to the way people actually speak. 2 2010 N u m b e r F • Films involve the viewers, appeal to their feelings, and help them empathize with the protagonists. • DVDs usually come with subtitles in English, which facilitates understanding and improves reading skills. After discussing the importance of teaching intercultural communication and suggesting films that match specific cultural...

The French cinema comprises the art of film and creative movies made within the nation of France or by French filmmakers abroad. France is the birthplace of cinema and was responsible for many of its significant contributions to the art form and the film-making process itself.[3] Several important cinematic movements, including the Nouvelle Vague, began in the country. It is noted for having a particularly strong film industry, due in part to protections afforded by the French government.[3] Apart from its strong and innovative film tradition, France has also been a gathering spot for artists from across Europe and the world. For this reason, French cinema is sometimes intertwined with the cinema of foreign nations. Directors from nations such as Poland (Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Andrzej Żuławski), Argentina(Gaspar...

The judge, a formidably heavy-featured man, rolled up the sleeves of his black robe as if to physically chastise the two young men standing before the bench. His face was cold with majestic contempt. But there was something false in all this that Amerigo Bonasera sensed but did not yet understand. “You acted like the worst kind of degenerates,” the judge said harshly. Yes, yes, thought Amerigo Bonasera. Animals. Animals. The two young men, glossy hair crew cut, scrubbed clean-cut faces composed into humble contrition, bowed their heads in submission. The judge went on. “You acted like wild beasts in a jungle and you are fortunate you did not sexually molest that poor girl or I’d put you behind bars for twenty years.” The judge paused, his eyes beneath impressively thick brows flickered slyly toward the sallow-faced Amerigo Bonasera, then lowered to a stack of probation reports...
