Developing Good Business Sense

For my paper, I will discuss hospital emergency rooms. I have been to each of these hospitals in the past, either for myself or my children, one of the hospitals; I actually worked for in the past. Due to the fact I worked in a hospital for many years as a patient care technician, I tend to be mindful of different things that go on in different hospitals. Sometimes I would compare our tasks to those of other hospitals. The first hospital I will discuss is a past employer. I haven’t worked there in about 3 years and things have changed some but not much from talking to friends that still work for the company. When I worked there, I worked deep nights from 11p-7a. I had a daily routine of getting report from the tech that was leaving. Then I would do vitals for each patient. Typically, I made a chart of everything I needed to do with each patient. Some things varied from patient to patient. However, most things were routine. I did vitals every four hours if they were a fresh surgery patient and for all other patients, vitals were routine, which means once per shift. Working deep night, most patients were sleeping, however there were patients that slept all day and were up all night calling for one medicine or another. Once all vitals were done and patient needs had been fulfilled, I would go to the chart and write everything in. During the night, if patients were up, I’d give baths, if they needed transfusions, I would go get blood & if there were any problems, we notified the nurse immediately. Our job was to also, stock storage rooms as well. Depending on how many patients you had that night, you would make round every other hour. Then about 2 hours before the shift ends, you go from patient room to patient room to do outputs by emptying them and writing in the chart as well as get weights on the patients. It only takes a normal level of common sense, a little determination and a business-like frame of mind to achieve what many do not even dare to attempt.
