Diego Velasquez's 'Chiaroscuro'

Avoiding the sacred stories, Velazquez loved to paint people he portrayed with purity, playing with the forms and light in the painting itself, like with the ''Chiaroscuro'' technique. Velasquez was able to draw a dark picture, without the slightest sign of light, and use this effect in order to highlight the main character in this case Bacchus. Moreover, this work is well known for being the first scene painting by Velazquez. This artist with his powerful realism and a deep understanding of how the human being face the unrealistic world of the ancient god had an enormous influence on all subsequent art world and artists.

Diego Velazquez used a bit brighter colours in the works of his early period, when Velazquez used more chiaroscuro (treatment of light and shade). Diego Vekazques use the techniques of oil canvas, which was the big advantage on 15-16 century. In that period, the oil painting was not so popular, it was very hard to get the canvas. In that case you can see how the god is blessing the peasant (class of farmers), and giving him the crown of laurel ancient symbol of power.

On the other hand the painting presents some modern things. In fact the peasant in the painting are dressed as the usual Spanish farmers who like to drink and have fun. Bacchus being the Ancient god of wine and festivities is depicted here as an assistant and the submitter. One of the drunks, who apparently earned the highest award for an addiction to drink, Bacchus awarded him with the laurel crown but this actually a critic to the modern world, where the farmers are overwhelmed by their jobs, and try to find comfort in the drinks.
