There are numerous challenges when it comes to the dietary assessment of adults. A dietary assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s food intake. The present review will examine the basis surrounding the challenges that are encountered when carrying out a dietary assessment of adults.
Shlisky et al. (2017) states that by the year 2050 the global population of older adults (defined as those aged ≥60 y) is projected to double from 841 million (2013) to 2 billion, or 21% of the worlds population. Obesity is also increasing dramatically and is viewed as a significant global health problem. As people live longer and age distribution shifts towards a greater number of older adults, the number of obese older adults will also grow (Shlisky …show more content…
Furthermore, age is also a major risk factor when it comes to noncommunicable chronic disease (NCDs) (Shlisky et al., 2017). Such NCDs include cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, dementia and cancer. Shlisky et al. (2017) further discuss the major economic burden NCDs can pose. Age-related chronic disease is heightened by disabilities and death of relatives, reducing labour contribution and reduced productivity due to caring for ill family or friends.
Seals, Justice and LaRocca (2015) study on physiological function of the aging population suggest that the rapid aging of the world’s population is one of the most important and rampant problems of our time. Their study hints at the cost of living longer and how we are more susceptible to disorders such as chronic degenerative diseases, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Depression has been seen to be a trustworthy indicator of cardiovascular diseases. Such diseases include coronary heart disease and the increase of people classed as overweight or obese. Additionally, depression has also been shown to occur in approximately 30% of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (Stefanska et al., 2017). Stefanska et al. (2017) study indicates there is abnormal eating habits in patients with depression resulting in overweight and obesity. The patients examined under this study showed an extremely high intake of protein and saturated fatty acids. However, residents of rural areas compared to urban areas had a much higher body weight, body mass index (BMI) and total body fat. Dillon et al. (2018) study on the association between physical behaviour and levels of depressive symptoms suggests that substituting short daily periods of sedentary activity with relatively light activity may be associated with a reduction in anxiety and depressive symptoms.
