...A diverse community consists of people from various cultures, backgrounds, experiences, beliefs, economic statuses, and abilities. I come from a small town, even smaller school, a Caucasian race, and a middle class Catholic family. Although I am not the minority in my community I have had many opportunities to learn about those who are. There is immense diversity in my community. Being a student at Walla Walla Catholic Schools and a member of 4-H, I have had many opportunists to work with a lot of different kinds of people. One of the most memorable is being granted the opportunity to work with children who are mentally or physically disabled. In the spring time there is an annual “Challengers Baseball”. This is a game set up at a local...

...Introduction In analysis of diversity in my community, the race relations are moderate and tolerable in my neighborhood with exceptions. In recent years diversity has expanded to increase the importance and acceptability in non-controlled environments that allows personal growth in race relations within communities. The fundamentals of exposing oneself to the particulars of race challenges provide an interesting investigation to how current experiences are now different than ten years ago. The review of my neighborhood proves the notion on how promising diversity has changed the local community. Perspectives in Race in the Community Currently living in the suburbs, the neighborhood has a 2 to 1 ratio, in which, the majority is the minority race in the community. In my immediate neighborhood, the experience with my fellow neighbors are a welcoming aspect due to the flexibility of tolerance. Do members of your community look like you? In what ways do they look the same or different? The members in my community are welcoming and thoughtful by projecting respectfulness in sharing the same amenities in the neighborhood without conflict...

...weeks Ethics 125 has taught me the concepts of diversity in the United States along with the various proportions of diversity. I researched on my own cultural identity and ways in how it may affect the relationships I have with others. I have a better understanding on the effects of discrimination and prejudice in society throughout history; based on an individual or a group regarding their culture, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or age as well as the effects still occurring in society today. Learning what diversity is and the many dimensions of diversity such as a person’s gender, religious beliefs, race, ethnicity, and many more groups has made me realize how diversity has shaped society in the United States. I grew up learning that although a person may look or act a little differently to treat them just like anyone else with the respect like I would want to be treated. The information learned on other cultures, and their values, beliefs, morals of other groups has fascinated me as well as the history of prejudice and discrimination these different groups has had to deal with. Learning my family history was very interesting as I never really thought much about how my family came to settle in a small town in Wisconsin. By the history giving by my parents and grandparents I learned that the small town I grew up in is basically where a small group of Germans settled in when they came over to the United States. My grandfather’s great- grandfather came over to...

...Race and My Community Larry Wynn Axia College UOPX April 1, 2012 Race and My Community Even though community leaders, educators, and various groups in my community have fought and continue to fight for equal rights and treatment for all races, discrimination still plagues my community. Diversity in my community is limited, the lack of diversity causes many of the citizens of my community to be unfamiliar with other races and cultures which leads to ignorance, which leads to discrimination. I have lived in Galion, OH for almost three months. Galion is a small city about one and a half hours from the state capital of Columbus. The racial differences that are so different in this amount of a distance are profound. On numerous occasions I have encountered racism, bigotry, and intolerance directed toward various minority groups. The vast majority of people in my community are very similar to me in appearance. The population is primarily made up of Non-Hispanic Whites. The people of my town are not exposed to many races or ethnic groups, there is very little diversity; in contrast, Columbus has a much greater minority population, which I believe is the reason for the noticeable differences discrimination and bigotry. See Figure 1 below. [pic] As Figure 1 shows my community is basically 100% white. As of the year 2011, Non-Hispanic Whites totaled 96.1% of the population, the largest minority, two or more races, only totaled 2.5%; compared to Columbus...

...A. Culture and Diversity Culture is defined as our way of life, everything that is shared, passed on or transmitted from one generation to the next. Diversity is defined as a state of unlikeness, the condition of being different or a variety or range of different things. Everybody is diverse. B. Identify four aspects of diversity that have influenced your personal identity. Religion, gender, social status, personality 1a.) Social Status: One observable characteristic is appearance. Growing up, my family was lower middle class in a predominantly upper class town. Although we were always clean, our clothes were often ill-fitting, or third generation hand me downs. This led to a lot of teasing and bullying as a child and into my teenage years. As an adult, I am very conscious of my appearance, and am still very sensitive to any ridicule about my appearance. I am also very meticulous in how my children are dressed and presented to society, in hopes of preventing them from the teasing I was put through as a child. Religion: One observable characteristic is beliefs. I grew up Catholic, it was very apparent to others what religion we were due to specific traditions of the Catholic religion, especially during Lent. In high school, I made the transition from pubic school, to a private Catholic school in our community, which made my religious beliefs even that much more apparent. 1b.) Social Status:...

...Final Project: Race as it relates to your community What is a community? According to the dictionary, a community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. The community in which I live in is about equal in the amount of Hispanic, and African American residents; however, it appears to have fewer Caucasians than both Hispanics and African Americans. In this paper I will consider relations within my community, local government, schools, and workplace. I will also discuss the problems that an in-depth interview with Emmanuel King from King’s Group Home for Children (a local community children’s advocate) and my own personal accounts have made clear. Community relations within my community are positive for all the members in the areas of government, schools, and workplaces with only a few minor issues. Most members in my community do not look like me. I live in a mostly Hispanic and African American communities so most of my neighbors do not look like me. Even though my neighborhood is comprised of mostly Hispanics and African Americans, my community has a great range of Caucasians, African Americans, Asians, Arabs, and Hispanics. The people in my community get along extremely well. When it comes to the working environments in my community everything varies. Because my community is home to the state government as well as the local government and the fact...

...people do not believe that diversity truly exists in America. David Brooks is a huge advocate for this statement and has written an essay called “People Like Us” that claims diversity is an illusion in America. In this five page essay David Brooks starts off by saying he has never seen a truly diverse neighborhood where people of different backgrounds and careers live in the same area. When I read this statement by Brooks, I think of a multi fruit flavored pie that is covered by a layer of crust making it hard to see if the pie is actually mixed all together or if each slice is a separate fruit flavor. In retrospect to a neighborhood each part of a diverse neighborhood contains only one ethnicity in a slice of it (the mexicans are with the mexicans, and the asians are bunched with the...

...Cultural Diversity In the spirit of the holiday season, the following paragraphs will attempt to construct a “Christmas tree.” However, it will not be a “Christmas tree” in the traditional sense. For this tree, the stand, or base, will be the environment in which we grew up. Its branches will be our life experiences. We will adorn this tree with the lessons we have learned. The lights, which flicker on and off, will represent those individuals who come in and out of our lives attempting to spread negativity. Hopefully, we can enlighten them. If not, at least they do not snuff out the grandeur of our tree for very long. And, finally, the star on top will equal the conclusions we draw based on all of the above. We will call this tree “cultural diversity.” The challenge is to prove why every home should have one of their very own. Let us take a walk through the “Tree Farm” of life to explore this issue further so we can discover what is “cultural diversity” and determine why it is worth the effort of picking out one of these “trees,” bringing it home, and setting it up. We will start with the base of the tree—the environment in which we grow up. According to Marya Axner, author of the book The Community Leadership Project Curriculum, “‘Culture’ refers to a group or community which shares common experiences that shape the way its members understand the world. It includes groups that we are born into, such as race, national origin, gender, class, or religion. It can also include...

...Why is diversity and inclusivity important in the legal profession? Diversity and inclusivity are crucial in the legal profession because they enrich perspectives, enhance decision-making, and ensure fair representation and access to justice for all individuals. As someone deeply committed to advocating for marginalized communities, a diverse legal profession is better equipped to understand and address the complex and varied needs of society. Inclusive legal practices not only uphold ethical standards, but also promote trust in the justice system among diverse populations. My own experiences have shown the transformative impact of inclusivity in legal contexts. By challenging discriminatory practices and advocating for policy changes aligned...

...experiences with Target confirm that Target lives up to the image it is trying to create? I rarely go to a Target since I do not live close to one and it isn’t worth my going out of my way to go to one. In the past, it appears it is trying to live up to the image, What are the risks of a message like this? What steps, if any, has Target taken to mitigate the risks? (Focus on communication strategies Target uses.) Risks could be alienating a certain audiences, (ex: minorities, poor, gender, etc) if they aren’t cautious with what is on the website. Consequences Target has taken because of their positions on diversity. One I can think of is a couple years ago when Target donated money to a political candidate that was against same sex rights and marriage. Being such a hot topic and in the news so much, it can cause a large group of people and supporters to stop shopping and to convince friends/colleagues to not use their services. How does site compare to other corporate statements on diversity Five to ten suggestions for corporate diversity 1) Possible targeting more minorities. I didn’t see a lot of minority targeting within the site. Elaborate more on what they are doing to increase diversity 2) Maybe include a yearly outing to a lower income/provided area to do more work and have it reflect what their diversity programs are trying to accomplish. Many corporations will have a company day out to work with local neighborhoods 3) Maybe as a part of the history of their...

...The effect of human interaction on Shannon diversity along the organic horizon Craig Michael Hansen Department of Botany, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater Ok 74078 ABSTRACT This study aims to ascertain information on diversity of invertebrates in samples gathered from both near a trail and 1.5m away from the trail on a preserve in Payne County, OK. Samples are examined for invertebrates. Diversity, evenness, and richness are calculated using the number of each taxonomic order found and then compared using a t test. I found that there is not a large difference in mean diversity values between the two samples. I also found that there is not a correlation to human interaction at this study site. Keywords Species Diversity, Richness, Disturbance, Evenness, INTRODUCTION Diversity of invertebrate populations varies with the habitat or niche inhabited by the organism. For example, the differences between grass-dominated fields and cultivated fields affect species diversity because of the different conditions and amount of disturbance in the area. Having an understanding of the importance of soil invertebrates is important to understanding the purpose of the study. Soil invertebrates play a large role in maintaining soil nutrients, and therefore the plant life in the area. This correlates to oxygen in the ecosystem and affects us directly. This also provides a necessity for research of invertebrate species in the organic horizon. Studies conducted to find the...
