Modern networks can be broken down into two major parts—LANs and WANs. The LANs can then be further subdivided into wired LANs and wireless LANs. For wired LANs, in years past, many other types of LANs competed with Ethernet. Today, the only type of wired LAN that exists in most networks is an Ethernet LAN, as discussed in this chapter.
