Do you agree that modern means of communication alienate people?

„Communication is not only the essence of being human, but also a vital property of life.” I found a whole lot of such remarkable maxims in Internet when I wrote “communication+proverb” in Google but this quote by John A. Piece really impressed me. It clearly shows that the need of communication is of a great importance in our life because we are “social animals” so we cannot exist effectively without developing specific communication skills. That’s why communicating is one of the most talked about areas of human behavior that has even evolved in our technocratic world to form the new means of communication – Internet, cell phones etc. But here arises the question, if these new technologies separate and alienate people rather than it serves to bring them together. In my opinion, as with many other issues related to technology, we cannot say that it is fully true or false, but both the perspectives can co-exist.
On the minus side, the new ways of communication have some obvious disadvantages. According to a leading american sociologist, the social networks are actively “usurping” our world and isolating us from the real human interactions. For example, many opponents of Facebook and Twitter believe that modern people become alienated from each other by the increasingly dehumanizing lifestyle, in which these new means of communication have the dominant role. There are many young people addicted to this art of digital contact so they prefer it instead of real face-to-face communication. Unfortunately, such people often have problems when communicating in the “real life”. Furthermore, the normal human-to-human contact comprises verbal, non-verbal and facial expressions. So body language is really important when we aim to get to know each other. But how is it possible to make use from this powerful tool when writing an e-mail for instance?!
However, the modern ways of communication have many advantages as well. The cell phones, social networks and Internet at all allow people who have troubles meeting in the real world because of great distance for example, to keep in touch with their family and friends. Furthermore, the communication via Facebook, Skype or Twitter seems to be cheaper than making a phone call and faster than writing and receiving a letter. In addition, the new telecommunication wonders play a key role not only in bringing people socially, but also economically. They have became a crucial part of our work and business connections to partners across the globe. So from my point of view this kind of technology has brought the world closer together.
It can be seen from all mentioned above that the arrival of modern means of communication have led to heated discussions among the society and to many different attitudes. In my private opinion, the technological progress in communication is a process that couldn’t be stopped. Therefore, we have to benefit from it without forgetting that above all things we are human beings, so our “real life” communication shouldn’t be replaced or imitated by nothing.

The work brings up that success comes from developing personal leadership, from which leadership of others can follow. I had the opportunity to participate in a one day seminar with Mr. Covey, sponsored by my employer in 2010. At the time I took the seminar, I was an experienced software developer but I wanted to transition to the role of project manager. Covey’s work helped me to identify and work on some of my behaviors, which in turn helped me to take on the project manager role successfully to date. I executed a particular approach, I applied Covey’s teachings to my transition to project management, and then to a personal level. One of the good consequences at a personal level was obtaining my bachelor’s degree at Western Governors University, in 2014. Covey’s work proposes that just changing outward behaviors or attitudes is not the way to succeed. First, our principles, the way we perceive the...

This was the second long day in a row with endless meetings. Torras looked up and said: “What the heck are we going to say in Barcelona?” — where corporate headquarters were located. “I have no idea…” — replied Velázquez — “…if we do finally decide to launch the Roca brand in Egypt despite the current political turmoil, we will be sunk by the crappy advertising campaign…” Torras could not agree more: “This campaign has nothing to do with our brand values, but these guys are the ones who really know the market, and this local advertising agency has outstanding credentials…” he added. As if it was not challenging enough to decide whether or not to go ahead with the launch given Egypt’s political instability, the idea of a local campaign misaligned with the global brand values posed yet another question as to what the company should do with its mainstream brand in the Egyptian market. Roca: Company Background With a sales turnover close to €1.5 billion1, and over 20,000 employees, the Roca Group was the worldwide leader in the bathroom industry (see Exhibit 1 for some financial information). ...Takako Hirokawa, Noah Finkelstein, and H. J. Lewandowski† Department of Physics, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, CO 80309 (Dated: March 4, 2014) In response to national calls to better align physics laboratory courses with the way physicists engage in research, we have developed an epistemology and expectations survey to assess how students perceive the nature of physics experiments in the contexts of laboratory courses and the professional research laboratory. The Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey for Experimental Physics (E-CLASS) evaluates students’ shifts in epistemology and affect at the beginning and end of a semester. Also, at the end of the semester, the E-CLASS assesses students’ reflections on their course’s expectations for earning a good grade. By basing survey statements on widely embraced learning goals and common critiques of teaching labs, the E-CLASS serves as an assessment tool for lab courses across the undergraduate curriculum and as a tool for PER research. We present the development, evidence of validation, and initial formative assessment results from a sample that includes 45 classes at 20 institutions. We also discuss feedback from instructors and reflect on the challenges of large-scale online administration and distribution of results. I. INTRODUCTION Laboratory courses offer significant opportunities for engagement in the practices and core ideas of science. Laboratory course environments typically have apparatus, flexible...

...another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were convicted for their ideas. Hence, it is very difficult to change the traditions that are followed by majority of people. Similarly, when Darwin gave the theory of evolution, and challenged the old ideology, he was resisted by public. Nobody was ready to believe that apes were the ancestors of humankind. However, it is important to accept...

Is Hip Hop Dead?

...community discussions during the last years. Rapper “Nas” titled his eighth album in 2006 with this statement, and has caused a controversy among rap artists and listeners all over the world. But comparing today`s hip hop music with the roots of hip hop can we really claim that hip-hop is really dead? If so, what are the facts that lead in the death of hip hop? What does its demise mean for the average fan? How to bring it back? Does it mean the genre will go down in irrelevance like what happened in disco music? All these questions will be investigated during this paper, and to understand this complicate statement itself, we should figure out what the statement really means. Maybe it is the fact that most of the genre’s songs and music videos look exactly the same. Maybe it’s the mainstream hip-hop game’s emphasis in ridiculously shinning jewelry, the sexism and the focus on money and women. Better yet, according to Mickey Hess, “hip-hop’s untimely demise could be a result of the cancerous lack of creativity that plagued the general music industry in the last few years”. (Mickey Hess, 2007) So many people have said that this music once so radical and new is dead, Nas included. Nas in an XXL magazine interview when asked what he meant when proclaiming hip hop is dead he said:”Yeah Hip-Hop is Dead ‘cause America is dead...

Writing Skill

...Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill, regarding the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Controversial viewpoints are present in the literature, among Eastern and Western approaches to leadership, and also within the West, on US vs. European approaches. In US academic environments leadership is defined as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task".[1][2] Leadership seen from a European and non-academic perspective encompasses a view of a leader who can be moved both by communitarian goals but also by the search for personal power. As the European researcher Daniele Trevisani states: Different types of leadership styles exist in work environments. Advantages and disadvantages exist within each leadership style. The culture and goals of an organization determine which leadership style fits the firm best. Some companies offer several leadership styles within the organization, dependent upon the necessary tasks to complete and departmental needs. Laissez-Faire A laissez-faire leader lacks direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under his supervision. Highly experienced and trained employees requiring little supervision fall under the laissez-faire leadership style. However, not all employees possess those characteristics. This leadership style hinders the production...

The search to understand people’s ability to get along with other people using emotional intelligence began in the 1930s and was popularized by Daniel Goleman in the 1990s after the EQ theory was developed by Peter Salovey and John Mayer (Unknown, 2009). EQ was originally thought to be an inborn trait—one that could not be developed, but Daniel Goleman and other psychologists work to enhance individuals’ ability to become emotionally intelligent through education and awareness. What are the characteristics of an emotionally intelligent person? Since Emotional Intelligence has to do with one’s ability to get along with and influence others, there are a few...
