Do you believe that the greatest leaders are born, not made?

Leadership can be viewed as a process in which leaders and followers engage to achieve mutual goals. A leader is a person that displays the characteristics and personality traits of a leader and has the ability to obtain different leadership positions throughout his/her life. It has been said, the single most powerful way to grow as a leader is to become self-aware. (Andersen 2012). Social ability, self confidence, assertiveness, and boldness are all characteristics of natural born leaders. (London 2009)
A person’s natural ability to interact with others is called social-ability. All natural leaders display this trait. This characteristic allows leaders to be, understanding, generous, outgoing, friendly, and congenial towards those around them. Those leaders who carry this characteristic usually lands a career in fields that allow them to direct and motivate others.
Self-confidence is a fundamental basis from which effective leadership grows. Trying to teach leadership without first building confidence is like building a house on a foundation of sand. (Dao 2008) When you are in a leadership position, you have to not only know when to make a sound judgment, but you have to be able to do so. When looking at a leader’s self-confidence, you have to ask yourself; “ Is this person willing to go where no other leader dared to go?” A person in a position of power who lacks self-confidence can, and will potentially be viewed as a weak link.
When we think of assertiveness, most associate it with being “pushy”. Many leaders struggle with this characteristic due to a lack of self-confidence, a fear of not being accepted by peers, or just overall self-doubt. When placed in a leadership position, being assertive means being willing and able to take action. An assertive

...person can possess. No matter the environment, leaders are needed in every aspect of life. Children need leaders to help them develop, students need leaders to help them learn, and teams need leaders to help the group achieve a common goal. But the real question emerges, how does one become a leader? Are leaders born, or do they rise to the occasion? How do leaders get their peers to rally around their actions? Former National Football League linebacker Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens epitomizes what a leader should be on the field. Lewis was a linebacker for 17 seasons (1996-2012) for the Baltimore Ravens, and the early 2000’s Ravens defense is considered one of the greatest units in sports history. However, while Ray Lewis was viewed as one of the best on the field leaders in NFL history, however his legacy, reputation, and image were tainted by actions away from the playing field.. How is it that a figure like Ray Lewis could be so revered on the field, but off the field he was heavily criticized for his actions and behavior? Throughout this essay I will analyze Ray Lewis’ upbringing and discuss how he developed his leadership qualities that caused former teammate Jamal Lewis to say, “In recent history, I can’t really think of a player who has been as valuable to a team as Ray Lewis has been. He’s a different player, as far as his physicality, his passion off the field, his work ethic, and at the same time he can lead vocally. You don’t have all of that in one player, and I...

Leadership

...•           Are leaders born or made? Explain. Where in your background would we find evidence of your leadership capacity and/or potential? Leaders are both born and made. But a leader will never obtain his full potential without training and education. That said, most of us are familiar with the “born leader”, maybe our first experience with such an individual occurred during our youth. There was inevitably that one kid that took command and others followed. They personified adventure, charisma and “inspire risk taking” (Welch, 2005). Those elements are difficult to teach and even harder to develop from scratch. When someone embodies the combination of those traits, it will translate in to a form self-confidence that is infectious. Reflecting on my childhood, I was one of those ‘natural-born leaders’. I grew up in the foster care system, and lived in the projects of East Baltimore. I was filled with an uncanny spirit of boldness. By my 8th birthday, I had lived in 3 different homes and I approached each living situation as an adventure. I honestly never felt like nor reacted as a victim. I have to admit there was the factor of luck. I was blessed with athletic prowess and good looks, and I used both to my advantage to “get in the door”. But it was my intellectual ability, quick thinking and charismatic gifts that kept me “in the room”. My ability to accept responsibility, responsibility for my decisions and to be confident and believe my truth – even if in...

Abraham Lincoln: Greatest President

...Was Abraham Lincoln America’s greatest president? It is a question many people are asking. As of today, there have been forty four presidents of the United States that have taken the stand. But of those forty four, which one is the best? Abraham Lincoln has proved that he is the answer to that question. After succeeding in uniting the country, Lincoln outshines the others. “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” This is the oath that the president has to take on the day he steps into office. On that day, and every day after, each president has one goal in mind; to defend and to protect the constitution and the rights of every American citizen. Abraham Lincoln did everything he could to achieve that goal and to uphold the oath, which is what makes him the greatest president America has ever had. He ended slavery, an issue that has been tearing apart the nation for hundreds of years, and he united a nation that seemed almost impossible to bring together. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1849 as the second child of Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. He was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky. He had a normal childhood, only moving once across the Ohio River in order to acquire free territory in Indiana. He became a leader early on, always being the one his siblings looked up to. In 1840, he went on to marry Mary Todd...

Leadership

...hands with excitement and made an awful announcement. “Today we will be doing a group project.” I lifted my head, rolled my eyes and looked around the room for the right people to be in my group. That particular day I needed people that were going to be able to do the work without me. I needed people that were intelligent, motivated, understanding and wanted to do well on this project. Most importantly, I needed people that hadn’t made the bad the decisions that I had the night before. Honestly, I was looking for not just one leader, but a group of leaders. Did this make me less of leader? I do not believe so; I believe it proved me a good leader. I knew I didn’t have the skills necessary at the time to complete the tasks given to me. What does that mean a leader is? What qualities define a good leader? Do leaders arise in different situations? Are you born a leader or taught to be a leader? Once you’ve been a leader are you always a leader? Never, have I thought this much about leadership! After many questions and lots of thought, I’m still not sure that I have a stagnant definition of leadership but this paper is my attempt to analyze and define the term leadership and myself as a leader. Great leaders often have leadership styles that fit into three categories, and they interchange these leadership styles when it makes the most sense. The three basic categories of leadership are autocratic, participative and free-rein. Autocratic leaders are often very commanding...

Cloning News Report

...Cloning humans? No longer a dream. Madness in the major hospital of New York because of a very special birth. From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the first man on the moon nothing seemed impossible for humans. There seemed to be no limits. However, once the greatest of scientists had failed a large number of experiments, we had started to believe that we would never be able to clone humans. Now finally after many years of hard work and struggling, a baby boy was born today. His name is David Jonas and he is the first ever cloned human. The streets in front of the New York hospital are crowded with people shouting, singing and dancing. One whole avenue and 7 streets have been blocked from traffic coming in. The hospital is surrounded by police officers blocking any entrance. Dr Zavos had asked us, BBC, to join him inside just minutes after the boy was born. He had been allowed to attend to whole process of giving birth by a woman named Sarah. She had been appointed as the first woman to ever carry a cloned human due to her excellent health conditions and life style. We unfortunately weren't allowed in the room but we were told that she went through labour without much trouble or pain and she is in a stable situation. “Finally we can start moving on in the world. The numbers of infertility have increased enormously over the last 20 years. We were starting to run out of solutions and people were losing hope. This is one of the biggest advancements in technology...

...CHAPTER – IV LEADERSHIP LEADERS ARE BORN & MADE…. Leadership is the ability to articulate a vision, embrace the values of the vision and nurture an environment where everyone can reach the organizations goal and their own personal needs. Leadership is an indescribable ability based on concrete principles and a tool that anyone can learn that helps guides an organization or group of people in a beneficial direction or to a valuable destination. The ability to get work done with and through others, while at the same time winning their confidence respect, loyalty and willing cooperation. Before we get started, let’s define leadership. Leadership is a complex process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. A person carries out this process by applying her leadership attributes (belief, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills). The complete definition highlights the difference between simply managing and being a leader. Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and will power, you can become an effective leader; Good leaders develop through a never-ending process of self-study, education, training and experience. There is very little evidence that the so-called “naturally born’ leader really exists. Continuing and ongoing studies are showing that the concept of a “natural born” leader has little merit. One reason for...

My Army Story

...My Army Story I was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. At a young age I moved to a small town in North Carolina called Grantham. Virtually my entire extended family lived on the exact same road. I graduated High School in 2004 and following High School I continued working at Burger King for $5.65 an hour and trying to go to college. I eventually delved into heating and air conditioning, as well as construction framing houses. There was nothing for me there anymore. My career was nonexistent and I absolutely had to get out of my house and town. I enlisted into on January 10th 2006. I didn’t have a clue that the Army would put me on a path that would give me everything that I hold dear in this world. I attended Basic Training and AIT at FT. Benning, GA in order to become an 11B Infantryman. I chose to be in the Infantry because it didn’t seem right to be in the military and not be directly in the fight. I arrived at my first Duty Station in Ft. Lewis WA with orders to report to the Xth Battalion Xth Infantry Regiment. I found out later that X-X IN is one of the most decorated Battalions in the army, so I was happy to be a part of that. In June of 2006 I met my best friend. He’s my brother in arms as cliché as that sounds and forever will be. I met my wife on September 16 2006 and I haven’t been able to look away since. If I had never joined the Army I wouldn’t have my Wife or my Best Friend. In April 2007, after copious amounts of training and preparation...

The company gives the individual the opportunity through career development paths and mentoring to become a global leader. Career development helps the expatriate and the inpatriate employees make the transitions to and from their assignments and help the organization apply the knowledge the employees has obtained from their assignment. The company trains the employee to think globally and to be able to take advantage of global opportunities to stay competitive. The now global leader will be able to appreciate cultural diversity, become technologically savvy, build teamwork and partnerships in the foreign country which will result in greater achievements and embrace change. ...Good Manager To Be Effective Leader Management Essay It is a matter of great discussion nowadays whether good managers can be effective leaders. An organization needs both good management and effective leadership to achieve business success, but in real life it is hard to find someone who has both. It is true that a good manager needs to be an effective leader, according to Pettinger (2001), leadership is one of the most important assets of management. However, leadership itself is a skill and not a profession. For example, the ex-Italian president Silvio Berlusconi was the leader of the country and of his political coalition, however, the day to day government managerial role was undertaken by his minister of economy, Giulio Tremonti. On the other hand, Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Fiat and Chrysler Motor companies, takes both an active leadership and managing role in both companies. By having leadership skills, it is possible to be a good manager and an effective leader at the same time. In this essay I aim to give definitions of both leaders and managers as well as making a clear distinction between the two, followed by how the theory of leadership has changed over time, starting from 'leaders are born' to 'leaders can be made'. A manager can be defined as 'To manage is to forecast and plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate and to control' (Fayol, 1916) and that 'management is a social process…the process consists of… planning, control, coordination and motivation'...

Why Men Needs Vision and Dream

...the great mistakes of the church is it has reversed God’s program. It preoccupies people to leave earth, when in fact the instruction was to occupy till He comes. 5) Man was never created to dominate other men, but to dominate earth. You and I were created to dominate the resources of earth in the area of gifting. God gave all of us dominion, not over people, not even over your wife. 6) Discovery of your purpose is the source of your personal leadership. Leadership has to do with self discovery than it has to do with leading people. True leaders never seek followers, followers are attracted to the gift of the leader. 7) Vision is a preview of your purpose. 8) Man is spirit and spirits have no gender. You’ll never find in the Bible a reference to a male/female spirit. God took the first man, and put him in a body, and the first body God made was a male. Man comes in two models: male and female. 9) God only made only 1-human from the soil and he never went back. Not even women came from the soil. Out of the male body God pulled out a woman. God gave the woman the instruction to be an incubator for the man. 10) Wherever there is no management, God retards growth. Whatever you mismanage, you loose. If you mismanage your wife, you loose her. 11) Eden is a Hebrew word meaning presence. Hidden is not a place, it’s an environment. ...How well did you interact with your team? I feel as though my interactions with the team were consistent and thorough, although in the beginning communication was not the greatest. When one of our team members was out of town on business, I was slightly frustrated by the lack of communication among everyone. Communication among everyone became better and more consistent as time went on. I learned that I should have exchanged phone numbers right away with my team members, instead of only relying on email communications. What role did you play on your team? I stated in the beginning with my team that I am not much of a leader; I am more of a follower. Since Robin already had a solid idea for the team project, I suggested he just tell me what to do and I would contribute my share, just like I would do for a manager or boss of a company. When it came time to do Project Part II, Joe suggested for me what to do, so I once again contributed my part and also offered to help him with the slide show and editing. I am more comfortable taking suggestions from other people, rather than being the one who “assigns” tasks to team members. Individuals must feel a sense of satisfaction in order for the team to function. Fortunately, teams will typically have people with different temperaments and skills who will want different roles. I believe this is the main reason our team functioned well. What role did the other members on your team play? Robin played role as the initial...

...Introduction Leadership? What is it? What all does it encompass? Can you define it? Over decades, leadership has been a very fluid concept. Various scholars and researches (maybe influenced by the leaders of their respective times) define the term differently with each definition possessing unique features, qualities and its significance to the society as whole. For example, in 1930s, E.S. Bogardus defined it as “a process in which the activities of many are organized to move in a specific direction by one leader”. This definition signifies ‘Directional leadership’, which is to say one-leading-many. In 1990s, however, J.Rost’s definition on the other hand was “Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes” i.e. mutual influence for mutual benefits. The question arises which one is correct? If any? The answer is both in their respective domains. Leadership is a vast and multifaceted concept that is ever evolving with time. Thus, it is not important to chase the definition of the concept but to concentrate on its essence. The most important essence of leadership is follower-ship, since without followers one cannot be a leader. The word ‘leadership’ misleads into believing that the leader is the central figure in the concept, it is in fact the followers who are of the utmost importance. It is imperative for a successful leader to understand the needs of the followers and to empower, inspire them...
