...Hello class, the case is very interesting but morbid as did the many that read it. While believing the case to be very real, lives are worth saving. The following article is about what CVS accomplished in Oct. 1 2014, according to Murphy, T., Felberbaum, M. (2014) “CVS Caremark, America's second-largest drugstore chain, is quitting selling tobacco products at its more than 7,600 U.S. drugstores as it focuses more on providing health care. The Massachusetts-based company said Wednesday that it will phase out cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco by Oct. 1, a move that will cost about $2 billion in annual revenue but won't affect its 2014earnings forecast. CVS Caremark leaders say removing tobacco will help them grow the company's business of working with doctors, hospitals and other care providers to improve customers' health.” Moreover, as of February 2015 CVS sales increased according to Forbes – “CVS, which stopped selling cigarettes and related products in September, previously generated an estimated $2 billion in annual tobacco sales. However, sales in the pharmacy segment alone in the fourth quarter jumped 21.7 percent to $24 billion buoyed by an early flu season with an ineffective vaccine that caused flu victims to search CVS for other treatment options. CVS also saw increased paying customers under the Affordable Care Act.” As the population age’s smokers and non-smokers need convince and places to seek a medical professional. The CVS case compared to the Smokers are...

...doubled in the first 6 months does not mean that someone gets a bonus or is put on probation. There is not enough information given in this question to warrant such action. This type of action is jumping to conclusions and assuming without the evidence to substantiate such an action. What would warrant such action of probation would be if this has happened before, and the correct training has been provided, inefficiencies have been documented, and the employee(s) have been counseled verbally and written counsel has been documented. What this does mean is that there is a challenging issue and the root cause of this issue needs to be found. An investigation is in order to figure out and understand what is causing the accounts receivable to double. This also raises the question as to why it has taken six months to figure out that there is an issue. Since accounts receivable is made up of what monies are owed to the organization from such examples like the patients copayments or payments for service, insurance companies or third party payers, part of the investigation should include what is outstanding or what kind of credit has been given to raise the amount of outstanding days for the accounts receivable. Also before the investigation is closed and hopefully the root cause of this issue is found, policies and procedures may need to be revisited since it is evident that what is in place is either not working or not being...

...accounting and its use within a business organization. As I’ve stated in a few of my posts during the week, before this course I was clueless to the world of accounting. I’ve had my assumptions, all of which are being proven to be wrong. My first assumption is that accountants were all nerds and that it was boring. Which either means I’m a nerd or this is actually an interesting and informative class; I believe it’s the latter. The required readings for the week were chapters one and three, which help lay the groundwork for the rest of the class. I scoured the Internet and found that accounting is everywhere and has been for quite some time. For hundreds of years accounting has been around and used daily. The Venetians started using the double booking method in the 15th century. They used it with the ships and merchants in their harbors in order to keep track of all that was going on. Like I stated in my post, I like history. When I understand the history of something and how it got started, I tend to comprehend the class work more. I also used YouTube, which again has proven its’ value. The accounting videos were slightly on the dry side, but I stuck it out. I also tend to learn more from a video than I do in a text. I find it to be more interactive thus keeping my attention for longer spans. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed this as much as I...

...enjoy is coupons that are fifty cents or lower are doubled every day. It is interesting that it is more important for Kroger to save money by eliminating this courtesy to the customers. Publix also accepts Kroger coupons; whereas, Kroger does not accept Publix coupons. Kroger intends on lowering the prices on items in the store versus doubling coupons. This policy could be viewed as positive or negative. If lowering prices is reducing prices by five or ten cents, customers may be highly upset and begin to shop elsewhere. The change of policy for Publix has positive intent, but Kroger’s policy can be viewed negative or positive based on the customer’s beliefs. References: Prosser, F. (2013). In December 1998, UST Inc.’s board of directors approved a plan to borrow up to $1 billion over five years to accelerate its stock buyback program.1 For UST Inc., the leading producer of moist smokeless tobacco products and a company widely known for its conservative debt policy and high dividend payout (uninterrupted cash dividends since 1912), this announcement generated considerable attention on Wall Street. Investors eagerly awaited the subsequent actions of Vincent Gierer, Jr., UST’s Chairman and CEO. In 1997, UST had suspended its stock repurchase program, approved in 1996, because of legislative and legal issues confronting the tobacco industry.2 In November 1998, the company signed the Smokeless Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement resolving its potential state Medicaid liability and reinstated its repurchase program.3 Management believed that this agreement represented significant progress with respect to the legal and legislative matters confronting the company, permitting UST to proceed with its business strategy and potential recapitalization. The Smokeless Tobacco Market The U.S. smokeless tobacco industry generated $2 billion of retail revenue in 1998 with approximately 5 million consumers of moist smokeless tobacco and 7 million consumers of chewing tobacco including loose leaf, twist, plug and dry. ...company is quite profitable. Comparing against the tobacco industry, UST’s gross profit margin, average return on assets, and return of equity are well above the industry medians. looking at their debt capitalization of around 17% compared to the industry median of 65.7%. They have achieved high return rates with low financial leverage, Over the last ten years, their net sales and gross profit have been at a steady growth due to their premium pricing strategy. They’ve taken an aggressive stance by introducing price increases annually or even bi-annually. But they are getting those results with increasing sales and revenues, which means they’re generating generally positive and stable cash flows. This pricing strategy does come as a double edged sword. Whilst UST are still a dominant player in this industry, there has been a decline in their market share, with a forecasted 7-year CAGR of -1.6%. This is due to their failure to respond rapidly enough to price-value competitors. Responding to this, the Red Seal Label was...

...Case 1 – Debt Policy at UST Inc. 1) UST is the dominant producer of moist smokeless tobacco, or moist snuff, controlling approximately 77% of the market. UST has been one of the most profitable companies in corporate America with low debt compared to other companies in the tobacco industry and the company has been recognized by Forbes in terms of profitability by achieving return of capital of 92.1%. Price elasticity of its products is also important while evaluating. Smokeless tobacco industry has a relatively steep demand curve and should be considered as having an inelastic consumer demand. UST has products outside of its core operations in the wine and premium cigar market also. The company built itself strong brand name recognition over the years by providing premium products. Tobacco industry does not allow new competitors to enter the market due to strict legal regulations and advertisement bans. So, we can think that UST will hold its position in the market in the long run. Although for the past couple of years, UST faced market share erosion due to price-value brands which offer low priced products. UST have been criticized for lacking innovation and new product offering. The company also has lack of international (geographical) diversity. Also, there is a chance of a cultural shift against tobacco, and UST is unlikely to expand to international market We can say that; UST is in a good position in terms of brand name and market position, capability to generate...

...outside of Hong Kong and Unicon will lose its competitive advantage. The problem is not how to convince the HKHA to buy precast products, the problem is how does Unicon meet the huge demand and still remain competitive. The solution is expansion, and this is how I plan to do it. • Add a second shift to the current day shift, doubling our current capacity • Move to a lean manufacturing process and away from our current batch processing method. An analysis of the times involved for each step should be completed in order to determine the full impact, but estimate production of slabs and facades could double capacity further. • Re-allocate plant space to solely produce slabs and facades and subcontract the manufacture of stairs and partition walls to an outside supplier. This doubles capacity as well, and finally • Build an additional 5000 square meter plant expansion, in order to double capacity again. Plant will be up to full capacity by August 1998. With these changes capacity will go from seven blocks to fifty-six block capacity at a minimum, and with experience and continuous improvement, Unicon will remain HKHA’s main supplier of slabs and facades for...
