Throughout history, Canada has brought forth various citizens who have made great contributions to the world. Of these Canadians, the greatest one to come has been Dr. Frederick Banting. In the 1920’s, Dr. Banting began researching diabetes, which led to the invention of insulin. His discovery resulted in lifesaving treatment for diabetic individuals. Without his contributions to medicine, millions suffering with diabetes may have passed away. Many family members, friends, peers, and loved ones would have been taken around the world. In addition to his research on diabetes, Dr. Banting also developed interest in aviation medicine. ...The discovery of insulin was a huge step in the medical field and one of the most important discoveries for Canada and the world. Before insulin was discovered, millions of people suffering with diabetes usually did not survive. Dr. Frederick Banting along with Professor J. Macleod, and Charles Best discovered insulin in 1921 after much research and several experiments at a laboratory in Toronto. (Bolotta) They extracted the pancreas from a dog and watched the side effects. After observing what happened, they created insulin by grounding up the frozen pancreas and they injected into the dog.
