When abortion was made legally available in the United States in 1973, it resulted in more than one and one half million abortions per year according to “The Human Life Bill”. The bill also states that, ¨...this abrupt and fundamental shift in policy occurred without any prior inquiry by any branch of the federal government to determine whether the unborn children being aborted were living human beings.” The (Replace The with An) unborn child should be considered a human being, and hold the same inalienable rights as all other human beings, as stated in the Declaration of Independence. Gordon, who is a well known figure in the medical world, has stated that life indeed does begin at conception. So why then do pro-choice advocates continue to argue that very matter? Some of these advocates on the opposing side of this argument agree that after a certain amount of time, the unborn child can be considered a life, due to its viability outside of the womb. This would mean that before the child has reached that time, it is not considered a living human being. But this way of thinking is also flawed. Dr. Micheline Mathews Roth stated, “...it is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception, when egg and sperm join to form the zygote, and that this developing human always is a member of our species, in all stages of its life.” (The Human Life Bill, Pg.10) Her statement shows that the unborn child is considered living, at every stage of its life. This completely invalidates any argument on permitting abortion until a certain length of time that the child has been in the womb. An unborn child is a living human being at all stages of its development. As a child develops within the womb, its nervous system, heartbeat, and internal organs begin to develop. All these things give evidence that the fetus is a life, and completing the developmental stage that all living things exhibit. In an article for “The New York Times”, written by Eric Eckholm, he brings up the idea that new findings on fetal pain are beginning to change the rules and guidelines for abortion. For those in opposition of abortion, these new findings are finally a way to show that the unborn child needs protection. The theory of fetal pain often reaches people’s emotions. It is a dismal matter to think about, and shows that abortions not only are unethical, but heartbreakingly cruel.
