Dressing up

Over the years it has become more and more essential to project an image of individuality. Especially in the teen-years, it is crucial to find oneself. Along with the self-awareness comes the increasing focus on other people’s image. If somebody possesses qualities that seem attractive, some people might assimilate that specific person’s behavior or style with the hope of obtaining these qualities. This is shown in the short story ‘Dressing up’, where the reader is presented with two sisters, Rachel and Flora. One of which (Rachel) possesses qualities that the other one (Flora) lacks. Flora therefore turns to drastic measures in her attempt to obtain Rachel’s qualities.
‘Dressing up’ is a short story that provides the reader with an insight into a typical, modern family that consists of a single mother who lives with her two daughters. The mother turns forty, and her birthday is the pivotal point of the short story. The story is structured in a way that gives the reader a full individually description of each of the three women involved. Throughout the whole story the reader is shown the mothers lack of capability handling her two daughters. As soon as the three of them are gathered in the restaurant, the mother senses a distance between her daughters. Her reaction is very dissimilar from the normal reaction of a parent. ‘The mother sat down between them, nibbling olives, talking incessantly, aware of the hollow silence between them,’ (page 2, line 57-58). She becomes nervous and uncomfortable by the situation instead of handling it. She does not have the bravery to confront them with the void between them, until after a while where she eventually asks if there is something wrong. The girls reply by saying that nothing is wrong, and the mother drops the whole thing instantly. She instead turns her attention towards another partying group at the restaurant, ‘In the centre of the room there was a colorful, boisterous party, who kept exploding into wild shouts and shrill laughter,’ (page 2, line 66-67). To describe the party, the writer uses powerful adjectives such as: colorful, boisterous, exploding and wild. This is done to contrast the two parties. In contrary to the party in the middle of the room we have the mother’s party. Here the atmosphere is unpleasant to a degree where adjectives are superfluous. The mother forgets about the discord between her daughters and begins to feel sorry for herself. She wanted nothing but a nice and easy birthday but the void between the two girls has ruined that for her. Instead of trying to solve the problem between them, she gets upset and acts like a child. ‘”I don’t want pudding,” she said, rather childishly,’ (page 4, line 121). The fact that she is upset leads to a character change within the mother. She goes from not handling the problem to solving it by being harsh and unforgiving. The very distinct description of the mother’s way of handling her girls makes parenting on of the themes of the short story.
Another theme is sisters and how they interact with one another. As mentioned earlier the story revolves around two sisters called Rachel and Flora. The reader is first presented with Rachel and a vague image of her is already drawn in the second line of the story: ‘Her thin body was taut, her whole body shook,’ (page 1, line 2). The reader instantly takes notice of the words ‘thin body’. This image of Rachel as ‘the lucky one’ of the two sisters remains throughout the short story, and the image created of Flora just reinforces the image of Rachel. The first thing the reader learns about Flora is that she has absolutely no order in her room, ‘… disordered heaps of crumpled discarded clothes, empty cigarette packets, broken lighters, dried-out mascara brushes and lidless lipsticks,’ (page 1, line 6-8). The lack of order in her room symbolizes that Flora is unorganized as a person as well. This image is reinforced when Flora is late at their mother’s birthday party and when she spills her bright red drink allover Rachel’s dress. The obvious contrast between the two sisters is drawn in this sentence: ‘It made her[Flora] feel taller, braver, cleverer, and Rachel was all those things already,’ (page 2, line 36-37). With these words the reader is shown that the true problem is not the fact the Flora has stolen Rachel’s dress. The true problem is that Flora sees Rachel as being better than her and she envies her. She therefore steals Rachel’s dress. The dress is not just a dress. To Flora it means much more than that. When she wears it, she feels more like her sister. The dress symbolizes qualities that Rachel possesses and that Flora would like to obtain. The mother’s bad permeability could be the reason to why the difference between the girls is that outspoken. If she had concentrated on making Flora see her own values and qualities, then maybe Flora would not try so desperately to obtain her sister’s qualities.
Ultimately this little discord between Rachel and Flora results in Rachel leaving to go live with her father. Flora has pushed Rachel away from her. Flora wished to possess Rachel’s good qualities and ends up looking great a couple of hours at the cost of her sister’s friendship. It is good to strive for improvement of oneself, but it is always essential to look at the side affects and consider ‘Is it worth it?’.

... I was a Jazzercise instructor teaching classes at a facility in New Jersey. Jazzercise is a choreographed exercise program that attracts mostly women. I had been teaching at this facility for several months and had a nice sized clientele, all of which were women. One night a gentleman arrived at class and signed up for a session. He did take me by surprise, seeing as I had only women customers at that point, although I knew of other classes in the area that had men on their clientele list. Anyway, Michael enjoyed the class and was coming regularly; no outstanding differences were noticed at that point. As time went on though, he started arriving wearing women’s leotards and spandex tights. He also had his nails nicely manicured and was wearing makeup. This was definitely a deviant behavior in my eyes, because he violated the standards of expectations in this situation and went against social norms. When he first arrived, he was wearing a t-shirt and shorts to work out in. As he seemed to get more comfortable with the group, that’s when we started to notice the change. It was gradual at first, nails nicely manicured, but not polished, eye make-up and mascara, and then the clothing. First it was spandex shorts, and a t-shirt than he started coming in wearing woman’s leotards. As I look back on it now, he was probably, in his eyes, conforming to the rest of the group in sporting the latest exercise workout clothing. (There was a Jazzercise clothing catalog, which...

Frequently out in public with his wife—in restaurants, at church—Donna maintained a dignified public appearance, bothering no one, and simply went on with his personal life as he chose. Management at Winn-Dixie, however, saw things differently. Shortly after they learned of his cross-dressing behavior, Oiler was fired. This happened in spite of the realization that his out-of-work behavior had absolutely no adverse effect on his job performance. Rather, Winn-Dixie's position was that if he was seen in public by someone who recognized him as a Winn-Dixie employee, the company's image could be damaged. Oiler sued the company for wrongfully terminating him on the basis of sex discrimination. He claimed that cross-dressing was nothing more than his “not conforming to gender stereotype as a man.” During the trial, records reinforced that there was not one shred of evidence that any of Oiler's out-of-work activities affected his ability to work. Nonetheless, the court ruled in Winn-Dixie's favor, citing that there are no federal or state laws that protect the rights of “transgendered” employees. Although Winn-Dixie won at the trial, they experienced an...

...threatened. I feel that the decision to fire Oiler was based off of someone’s personal feelings towards Oiler being a cross dresser which is very unprofessional, a company should not fire anyone based on personal feelings but instead on how could this effect the company. On the clock Oiler was a very professional employee for twenty years. Not only was Oiler’s employee rights violated but his civil rights also. The seventh Amendment to the civil rights act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in hiring based on sex, religion, and national origin. The Fifth Amendment has an explicit requirement that the federal government not deprive any individual of life, liberty, or property without due process of the law. By firing Oiler for cross dressing is depriving him of living his life in which I do not believe that companies should legally be able to fire employee’s for this or any other action that is personally done outside of the work place. 2) Some of the consequences I see for companies that punish employees for certain off the job behaviors are many law suits especially if the behaviors have absolutely nothing to do with the company. Crossdressing and the One Sex Model

...Bernhard Werner Cross-Dressing in Early Modern Drama and Prose September 11, 2012 The One Sex Model and Cross Dressing: “Assaulted and Pursued Chastity” “Behind every great man there’s a great woman”. If we had to define the term ‘’early modern’’, it would sure be a task that would not be easy to solve. The most of us would clearly try to define this term with the answer; everything that has not been written in old English can be seen as modern. But as it is often the case, the devil is in the details, and we have to take a closer look at other aspects that could lead us to the answer. We could for example ask ourselves in which time period we should categorize the early modern era. This is the parting of the ways, but we can set a round figure if we put our focus on the time after the late middle age, from 1500 to 1800. During this period of time people were not only developing there sense for new, and for that time unknown things, such as the human body but also evolving theories and a new philosophies of how fundamental things should work in society. At this point it might be the case that the question of what this facts have to do with cross dressing, could occur. As mentioned before, medical researches evolved, and people came up with new theories in order to form a so called standard for a society. A society that we can surely now categorize as one with somehow artifice moral values. One of these Theories is the “one-sex model” or “one-sex theory”. In this...

As he walks out from the front door to his car on the driveway… Treatment Concept I have chosen “Hitman” as the title of this short film. The aim is to create a 2 to 3 minute story in the genre of mystery. Within this mystery genre, a middle age man will be introduced without any dialogue but with a voiceover narration, as he gets ready for work. As we explore the life about this man over the narrative track, the key conventions will lead the audience into a false sense of knowledge. The main concept of this film is to build up to the climax where the audience will be shocked by a twist to the plot. This supposed genre would allow the viewer to become caught up in the theme and make the wrong assumption until the twist is revealed in the end. Script Outline The short film begins with a close-up shot of an alarm clock ringing at 6am waking up the man in the bed. The camera shows a few shots around his room where everything is perfectly...

Corporate Social Responsibility

...1. Introduction “There is one and only one social responsibility of business – to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to stay, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud” (Friedman, 1970). As one of the most influential economic scientist in the 20th century, Milton Friedman did this statement 41 years ago. In the last three decades the world economy went through a large change. Affected by the crisis of the industrial capitalism in the 1970s, the currency crisis in the 1980s or the financial crisis in 2007, business needed to readjust itself every time it reaches its limit. Especially concerning the collapse of the real estate and financial bubble in 2007, a re-orientation for organizations to concentrate on long-term performance instead of inconsiderately accumulating capital was and is required. “Adopting business strategies that meet the needs of the enterprise and its stakeholders today while sustaining the resources, both human and natural that will be needed in the future” (KPMG, 2011). Those strategies to fulfill sustainable criteria are the elements of Corporate Social Responsibility. But as Friedman mentioned, the goal of an organization is to increase its profits. Could this be a win-win-situation for organizations and the environment? Or is the assumption correct, that this obvious contrast could only satisfy one party? If so, wouldn’t be the...
