...The settlers of Jamestown could have died for many reasons, but the first and foremost is drought. They arrived in 1607, which, in accordance with Document B, was the middle of a drought. The chart shows that this drought was already an inch below the average, and was to get worse for several years. A lack of rain lead to food shortage, especially when Francis West and his crew left the settlers without a shipment of grain. This is proven in Document D, “The [ship] and her lifesaving cargo returned to [Jamestown]...[but] headed into the Atlantic, leaving the colonists…” However, this was not the only way the drought caused the settlers to meet their untimely end. Settlers showed no evidence of farming during this drought, and acquired all of their food from the natives in the area. To do so, they often forced trade with violence. As the American Indians ran out of food, the settlers demanded more as their own supplies dropped. Large raids broke out during a portion of the drought that almost reached two inches in the negative direction. Multiple forts were attacked, and on one occasion, 60 men were killed. Nevertheless, many of these deaths were the very fault of the settlers themselves....

During these years people traveled to Jamestown in search of money to pay of their debt and one day own land there. Life was rough, from having no food to death. Although the settlers had many challenges, some overcame them and survived while some didn’t. There were many deaths during early Jamestown with a variety of causes. In 1607, James I gave his blessing to create Jamestown, without his blessing Jamestown would not have existed. 40 of the original 110 settlers had survived by December of 1607. By 1611, 80% of the 500 settlers had died which left roughly around 100 surviving settlers. Early Jamestown had many deaths, but more were yet to come. Without a food or water source, they were destined for hard times involving death. The rivers and creeks eventually became brackish which means the water was so polluted it was not drinkable. There were only fish during the spring and early summer so during the rest of the year they could not fish which meant no fish to eat. In 1609, 37 men sailed up the bay to load a small ship with grain for Jamestown. The small ship of grain did...

A few setters died during the early stages of the settlement from attacks from Indians disease and other reasons. Colonists died in early Jamestown because of three main problems. These were unskilled workers, relationship with Indians and environmental issues. The first issue Jamestown was its lack of skilled workers. Jamestown lack skilled works. Jamestown had no farmers and with the skilled workers they had they did not have enough of them. For example there was only one blacksmith in Jamestown while there was seventy five gentlemen!(Doc c) James town had a total of seventeen labors. They also did not have any apothecaries(Doc C). Early Jamestown lasted from 1607-1611, though it was going to become one of the best known settlement cities in the future and the first permanent English settlement in the area known today as the USA. However, there were already people living in the area that was to become Jamestown-The Indians. The Jamestown area was heavily populated with many tribes of Indians. The area was close to the Chesapeake Bay, which provided food and travel for the natives as well as jobs for farmers and fishermen. There is some evidence that the Indians were expecting an attack. ...Colonizers: Great Britain in Jamestown “Life and Death at Jamestwon” INTRODUCTION “There it comes!” In May of 1607, there was the arrival of the first white settlers in Jamestown, Virginia. Virginia Company, a group of entrepreneurs from London, funded the explorers. Three ships namely Susan Constant, Godspeed, and the Discovery were used to transport the 104 men and women who left England to look for greener pastures in North America. Half of the settlers aboard the three ships were mostly “gentlemen” and some others from upper classes who do not know how to find a way to save their own lives. As soon as the colonists arrived at Jamestown On May 13, 1607, their expectations were immediately cut short since this group was met by rampant diseases, internal political struggle, as well as attacks from the native Indians. The initial instruction for the colonialist was to ensure that they have located a site that was not near the coasts to ensure an avoidance of Spanish warships, Virginia Council's primary concern. The relationship with Powhatan Indians were a major worry of the England Settlers. Because of the environmental issues at Jamestown, the English settlers had to establish their relations with native Powhatan Indians. Moreover, there were also some Indians who were hospitable to the first settlers, others were very hostile and would discharge them with arrows. After constructing rudimentary fort as well as witnessing Indian attacks, the white settlers realized that they were...

...Disaster In Early Jamestown It was not an easy beginning for the English settlers of Jamestown. English settlers went through the james river, to chesapeake bay, to the Atlantic Ocean to establish a permanent english colony. 40 miles upstream they faced many problems mainly that many died. Colonists died for mainly 3 reasons. Firstly, the environment. Secondly, lack of settler skills. Lastly, relationships with Native Americans. Firstly , the environment in early Jamestown wasn’t good, because the water in the adjacent river and creeks were contaminated, so the colonists didn’t have a good source to get clean drinking water. The colonists tried to dig shallow wells to supply themselves with drinking water but they were, “vulerable to drought and salt water intrusions.” [Doc. A] colonists would also dump their human waste into the river and instead of the waste flushing away, it just festered which caused disease.[Doc. A] 1606 was the starting point of the longest drought it lasted till 1612, drought was a big reason for their starvation. [Doc. B] In 1607 and 1608 disease killed 77 settlers. [Doc. E]...

...In 1607, one hundred and four Englishmen were sent to North America to begin a new settlement. They settled in Tsenacommacah, an area near Chesapeake Bay. The men established the colony as Jamestown. After disputes in England, puritan separatists left England on their own financing and settled a new colony, Plymouth, in 1620. While both Jamestown and Plymouth originally established a legislative government, they diverged by the people of Jamestown seeking money and those of Plymouth looking for religious freedom. The settlers at Jamestown were members of the Church of England, contradicting the settlers at Plymouth who were separatist from the Church of England. ...They were hopeful at first. In the spring of 1607, English settlers began arriving on the James River in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia to build an English settlement in the New World and begin a fresh life. But life was proved to be devastating- by 1611, more than 80% of the 500 settlers who arrived four years before, had perished. The question is: why did so many colonists die in early Jamestown? It can be answered by three main reasons: lack of clean water, shortage of good workers, and poor relations with the Powhatan Indians. First of all, water caused death in three ways. For example, the water was found to be too salty for drinking (Document A). In addition, human waste tended to cluster rather than flush away, leading them to fester in rivers in Jamestown (Document A). Historians also found that droughts were evidenced in the tree-ring patterns of old cypress trees growing near Jamestown throughout the winter of 1609 to 1610 (Document B). These pieces of evidence prove that the water caused sickness, due to the moon tides affecting the water’s saltiness, and the filthy garbage in the water would have caused disease. Droughts were another contributor...

...The early settlers of Jamestown had arrived in the settlement with the thought that the region would bring much promise and glory to their lives they had left back in Britain. Contrastingly, they received the complete opposite of what they intended, where only a mass amount of tragedies occurred amongst their population. Many historians say that the reasons for the mass deaths in Jamestown was primarily due to the spread of disease, environmental natural disasters, or Native-Americans. The predominant reason why many settlers died in Jamestown was due to the numerous confrontations and attacks amongst the settlers and neighboring Native-American tribes. According to Document E: Chronology of English Mortality in Virginia, 1607-1610, it shows...
