...Chapter 15, Business Strategy in Asia, Kulwant Singh, Nitin Pangarkar and Loizos Heracleous, 2004 NOL and APL (A) CASE 15 After several years of dismal results, Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) was widely viewed as a laggard. The national shipping line was one of the worst performers among Singapore’s many government-linked corporations. Perhaps the low point was reached in 1996, when industry publication Containerisation International ranked NOL last in a field of 24 shipping firms on return on assets, and 18th in net profit margins. This was in stark contrast to the performance of other government firms, several of which could claim industry-leading performance, reputation and profitability. This poor performance imposed great pressures on NOL to take drastic action. Possibly in reaction, NOL announced in April 1997 that it was acquiring APL, the leading U.S. shipping line. This would be the largest acquisition ever by a Singapore firm and would catapult the firm into the league of major shipping lines. There were some concerns that NOL’s strategy was risky, as it was acquiring a firm larger than itself for a price some observers judged to be excessive. But NOL’s management was confident that it had found a solution to its problems, and that the acquisition of APL would ensure its future success. The future seemed bright. Introduction NOL AND APL (A) NOL Southeast Asia-Australia routes. Its ship charter business, American Eagle Tankers, focused on chartering ships...

...The Views of Far Eastern University - East Asia College Students on the Effects of Boyfriend/Girlfriend Relationship in Academic Grades A Research Paper Presented to: Ms. Loida R. Soreta Submitted by: Ruth Anne Geliberte Kathleen D. Mendoza Far Eastern University - East Asia College April 12, 2011 Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study On a daily basis, college students are faced with a conflict of interest: to study or not to study. Often times these decisions are affected by outside factors that are beyond the control of the student (i.e. work, athletics, involvement in organizations). One other factor that is believed to be a major influence is the existence of a significant other. While involved in a relationship during college, one might be forced to choose either studying for school or spending time with the significant other, leaving the student with increased amounts of stress. Level of commitment to the relationship must also be taken into consideration. Many factors contribute to a student’s academic grades; the aim of this research was to know the effects of having a boyfriend/ girlfriend relationship while studying and if it affects the student’s academic grades. There are lots of different types of relationships but romantic ones have a special quality to them that sets them apart. Unlike other forms, they are created through a desire to be with an opposing sexual energy, a different flavour. Not necessarily different gender...

Language Cultural

...What was the change of the language culture after Hong Kong handover to China in 1997? By Kay Yim Hoi Man Hong Kong's culture was born in a fusion of East and West. It not only kept many Chinese traditions, but also experienced a baptism of western culture. Since the cause of the First and Second Opium War from 1983 to 1986 , Hong Kong was become a British colony. Therefore, many Britons came to Hong Kong for development and eventually English became the major language(¶4). However, the proportion of Britons lived in Hong Kong were gradually declined as there were large numbers of Mainland China immigrated to Hong Kong since 1974.Luckily, Hong Kong was located on a favorable geographical location, where could attract numerous of people from Western and Asian ,especially the majority of other cities in China ,for example Shanghai.( ¶1)(7)As a result, there had the reduction of multilingualism and the enlargement of Cantonese as usual spoken between 1960s and 1990s.(157)( ¶3) From my point of view, the adoption of "Biliterate and trilingual” policy (¶2) was probably good after Hong Kong handover to China. In the past, British government did not excluded the unique cultures of Hong Kong such as Cantonese and Traditional Chinese. Most of them were willing to accept and even actively to encourage people to learn. However, after Hong Kong returned to China, China government had interfered in Hong Kong Culture. Formerly, we would use traditional Chinese as our local written...

The American Way of Strategy (Ch: 7-9 Summaries)

...The American Way of Strategy (Ch: 7-9 summaries) The Cold War began in the late 1940s when Joseph Stalin refused to move the Red Army from Eastern Europe, imposed communist regimes on the region, began a massive arms buildup, and sponsored communist revolutions throughout the world. The Cold War began in Europe and ended in Europe. This war, as any other war, was a calculated plan and not just a tragic accident as evidence showed in the memorandum soviet deputy foreign minister Ivan Maisky sent to Josef Stalin. “Maisky suggested that the Soviet government manipulate popular fronts to bring communist satellite regimes to power throughout continental Europe after the war.” So the Cold War resulted from Soviet aspirations to dominate Europe and Asia. However this time, the Soviets preferred methods such as intimidation and subversion to fight this war. As it is discussed in previous chapters of this book, “The purpose of the American way of strategy has always been to defend the American way of life,” which led the United States to prevent the Soviet Union from taking control over Eurasia by conquest, subversion, or military intimidation. However, this time the options to stop Soviets from taking control over the region were limited by the determination of American leaders to avoid militarizing American society. There were options such as the ‘strongpoint defense’ “This was a modified form of isolationism, which would commit the United States to defending only North America...

Pure Land Buddhism Case Study

...Buddhism The idea of Pure Land Buddhism was raised in China and then spread to other countries, such as Japan and East Asia. (Wallace 2002, 43) It became famous in these countries but there are variations between the ideas. Take Indian and China as examples, Indian think that there would be separate life after rebirth as their present life may be suffering and the life after death should be happy and not connected to the present life. On the other hand, Chinese take rebirth as the continuation of life before death, which the human relations in the present life are connected to the life in Pure Land. So they think that people should try their best to behave good because their merits would shift to ancestors and...

International Business Report

...International Business - Assessment One Research Report Executive Summary This report examines the global company Nike and how it progressed from a small American based company to one of the largest sporting footwear and apparel brands in the world. The entry mode into global business chosen by Nike of contract manufacturing has allowed the company to benefit on two particular fronts. Nike outsourced the manufacturing element of the business initially to China and later expanded to over 750 factories mostly across South East Asia to capitalise on the abundance of low cost labour available to manufacture its products. Contracting out the manufacturing function also allowed the company to focus all of its energy and resources on developing innovative products and then marketing these products across the world. A core value of the Nike organisation is innovation which is embedded in its strategic direction. It developed a culture where no idea is a bad one and innovation is highly valued. This relates both to product development and marketing opportunities. Having this strong focus on innovation has allowed the company to continue to be a world leader in the creation and production of sporting good without the need or desire to diversify into different business streams. Nike has also displayed innovation throughout other business decisions to ensure it tackles environmental issues head on. This attitude took the potentially damaging situation of Nikes association with sweatshops...

While independent from each other, these essays share some common properties. They are all empirical and focus on the interaction between inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) and host country characteristics. The primary focus of the thesis lies in how inflows of FDI affect developing and transition economies. Macro-level data are used in all essays. The first essay analyses the FDI inflows that the transition economies of Eastern Europe have attracted and tries to find determinants of these inflows. The following two essays compare the effect of FDI between developing and developed economies. The second essay studies the relationship between corruption in the host country and the volume of FDI inflows. The third essay explores the effect of FDI inflows on host country economic growth. The fourth and final essay analyses the relationship between FDI and trade, focusing on the link between FDI flows and host country exports in eight East Asian economies.
