...EBay Case Analysis Lynn Ryan Graduate School of Oklahoma Wesleyan University 1. How does eBay create value? Ebay creates value in different ways. First, it provides sellers the opportunity to advertise to a larger market which can be compared to newspaper, radio and TV advertising. Ebay charges a fee based on the final price. It also allows sellers to set up their own eBay stores to sell and advertise their products. Monthly fees for these stores create additional revenue for the online giant. For buyers, eBay offers many choices by setting up comparisons of similar products’ prices and auction bidding function which increases the products’ value. Finally, eBay serves up third party advertising to its customers based on their product searches. 2. What potential contracting problems exist on eBay? Potential contracting problems with eBay exist within both the selling and the buying arenas. The most common problems that arise are when the products are not shipped or when buyers do not pay for items that they are contractually obligated to purchase. Naturally, fraud can exist in any big online market like eBay because it is difficult to sort through millions of transactions. Thus, eBay has set up a feedback system which allows users to rate their experiences with other students on the website. This feedback system has its own weakness because sometimes a seller or buyer could easily apply for more than one account and mislead users with fake reviews...

...What eBay has Done For The E-commerce Business? CITN120-Introduction to Networking If you’re a consumer looking to buy or sell an item or maybe catch a fantastic bargain, you have probably heard of eBay. The company’s founder Pierre Omidyar started his journey on September 3, 1995, as a simple home page and a broken laser pointer and created something that had never been done before. Pierre simply intended the listing on his web page of a broken laser pointer to be a test more than a serious offer to sell at auction. He was shocked when he received a response, “I’m a collector of broken laser pointers,” and sold the item for $14.83. When Pierre received this answer back he knew that he had created something big and transitioned from one of commerce, buying and selling things, to one of e-commerce, connecting people around the world together over the internet. In 1996 Pierre and his hand picked business team set out with their vision, which was to create the first online auction website for consumers to buy and sell their items. Since the start up, eBay has become the market leader and pioneer in the on-line auction industry and its brand name has become synonymous with e-commerce. eBay doesn’t actually sell any goods itself, it is simply a meeting place where the merchandise is sold and delivered by third party sellers that are not employed in any way by eBay. This unique e-commerce business gives sellers a place to reach buyers, and gives buyers access to the world’s...

The Application and its overall architecture Component Model and its interactions Technological aspects of the eBay Architecture Strengths and relative weaknesses of the Architecture Component Model and variations Key Quality Attributes favoured by the eBay Architecture Evolution of the Application and its Architecture Conclusion The Application and its overall architecture EBay is a highly successful eCommerce platform. The larger category of eBay includes 19 different platforms (e.g. skype, payPal, rent) but we'll be focusing on the search and trade platform. The other sister platforms became part of eBay due to recent acquisitions and in some cases result in architectural mismatch which would be an interesting topic for a separate case study, therefore this case study focuses on the original platform's architecture and its evolution in recent years. EBay is an eCommerce system where a user can browse to the website eBay .com and search for anything they want to buy, in auction or right away from the buyer, or to post some item for sale which other users can search for as prospective buyers. The users then arrange for payments online (using eBay's payPal system which is a separate system designed solely for that purpose and recently integrated onto the eBay platform) and receive the...

...eBay was launched in 1995 as the first online auction by Pierre Omidyar with the intention of creating a person-to-person trading community based on a democratized, efficient market where everyone could have equal access through the same medium, the internet. The name eBay stood for “electronic Bay area” coined because Pierre’s initial concept was to attract neighbors and other interested San Francisco Bay area residents to the site to buy and sell items of mutual interest. eBay.com provided a venue for online sellers to auction or retail a wide variety of products ranging from computer parts, videos, books, movies, automotives and real estate to buyers from different locations. It brings together buyers and sellers every day on a local, national and international basis through a range of websites. It provides online marketplace for the sale of goods and services, as well as other online commerce, or ecommerce, platforms and online payment solutions to a diverse community of individuals and businesses. Effectively, eBay created a meeting place or community where different sellers and buyers can meet, exchange, trade and make business transactions with each other. The said virtual community marketplace concept destroys the physical barriers of time and geography in real world marketplaces. eBay’s business model is based not only on providing the infrastructure for the said community but also maintaining the trust and safety programs that ensured the integrity of the trading community...

A SWOT analysis is helpful to summarise the key issues arising from an analysis of the business environment and the capabilities of an organization to gain an overall picture of its strategic position. This can also be useful as a basis to generate strategic options and to assess future courses of action. A SWOT is company specific as opposed to the Porters five forces which is industry specific. The aim is to identify the extent to which strengths and weaknesses are relevant to, and are capable of dealing with changes that take place in the business environment. ...SKYPE In the hands of eBay, Silver Lake, and Microsoft Larry Fan, Aly Kassim-Lakha, Betty Liu, Cristina Peruyera, and Kimberly Yao December 12th, 2014 Professor Emilie Feldman MGMT 249 Fan, Kassim-Lahka, Liu, Peruyera & Yao | MGMT 249 Executive Summary Skype was founded to build and provide a telecommunications application, and despite many changes in ownership, its core business has not drastically changed over the years. Over the past decade, Skype has seemingly thrived to varying degrees under the leadership of eBay, Silver Lake Partners, and now Microsoft. The different visions each acquirer had for Skype and its integration made all the difference in Skype’s value at each stage. In the following paper, we will investigate how each of the three companies chose to acquire, integrate, oversee, and potentially divest Skype, and thus unlocking or creating value through the process. By analyzing information databases and news archives regarding Skype as well as utilizing course frameworks and scholarly papers discussing merger and acquisitions, we will argue that Microsoft has been more successful in integrating Skype than eBay has, though Skype’s long-term success in the hands of Microsoft remains uncertain. In addition, Silver Lake Partners was able to unlock value in Skype using a different set of perspectives as a financial acquirer. Throughout it all, Skype has continued to innovate and provide free services to millions of users globally. Introduction In 2002...

...Intangible assets- practical approach An asset that is not physical in nature. Corporate intellectual property (items such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, business methodologies), goodwill and brand recognition are all common intangible assets in today's marketplace. An intangible asset can be classified as either indefinite or definite depending on the specifics of that asset. A company brand name is considered to be an indefinite asset, as it stays with the company as long as the company continues operations. However, if a company enters a legal agreement to operate under another company's patent, with no plans of extending the agreement, it would have a limited life and would be classified as a definite asset. While intangible assets don't have the obvious physical value of a factory or equipment, they can prove very valuable for a firm and can be critical to its long-term success or failure. During the past years, attention was brought to companies that are based only on intangibles, such a company is Amazon but also big companies that relied mostly on manufacturing goods, started paying more attention to intangibles. Oracle is an American multinational computer technology corporation headquartered in Redwood City, California, United States. The company specializes in developing and marketing computer hardware systems and enterprise software products – particularly its own brands of database management systems. Oracle is the third-largest software maker by revenue...

...people are casual, intermittent users. But maybe you are ready to take that next step and make selling on eBay a full-time vocation. Nearly anyone can sign up and begin selling immediately, but only those who maintain the status of PowerSeller are able to financially maximize their selling experience. EBay makes a portion of their profits by extracting a fee from each attempted and actual sale. This fee is deducted from the sellers account. The fees are structured at a lower percentage for those who generate the most profit for eBay; those are the PowerSellers. A PowerSeller typically saves 5% over members of the general selling class. Other benefits exist beyond reduced fees, including access to group health insurance and representation in customer disputes. Even United Parcel Service in a cooperative agreement with eBay will offer shipping discounts to PowerSellers. With benefits such as these available, it’s obvious that the PowerSeller program is an attempt by eBay to attract recruits. The decision point for interested individuals as with any decision often comes down to the overall opportunity cost. Those can be weighed by viewing eBay’s PowerSeller and Top Rated Seller Policy. The website itself is accessible on the internet or smartphone as eBay.com. The PowerSeller requirement policy is linked through the bottom, fine printed “sitemap” section of the eBay homepage. After opening the sitemap, one must find the PowerSeller section. Clicking on its heading...
