Farming, industry, political views, the economy; some of the many aspects that differ between two completely different regions, the North and South. “Where you live affects how you live”, and that saying is relevant to the first half of the 1800’s. The South had warm summers with lots of fertile land perfect for growing crops and supporting their agriculture. While the North although okay for farming was famous for their industry and manufacturing. The north and south were puzzle pieces that could not fit together because of their very distinct differences in their views as well as their economic differences. Both the North and South differed greatly in the first half of the 1800’s when comparing their economies and political views.

How Valid Is the View That, All Things Considered, There Was More Uniting Than Dividing the North and South in 1850?

...that took place as the United States came of age. As the industrialized North and the agricultural South grew further apart, tensions between both sides grew until war was inevitable. The North and South both had drastic cultural and economic differences- historian Wyatt Brown believed the south had severe cultural differences compared to the ‘Yankee’ north, Owsley believed there was a clash of values and a clash of two economic systems while others believed the aggressive north was infringing on the rights of the south. However, Craven and Revisionists believe the differences between the north and south have been exaggerated and there was more uniting the north and south than dividing, such as the shared language, history and culture. Although, it has been argued that slavery was the underlying cause, which resulted in a bitter, fueled war. The north and south of ante-bellum America are commonly known as being vastly different, however historian Craven argued that there was more uniting the two sections than diving and he stated that war was not inevitable. Both sections shared a common language, history, culture, politics and transport and trade links. Most southerners, alike the Americans living in the north shared the pride in US achievements, the respect for property ownership and all the other components of the ‘American Dream’ therefore bringing both sections together. The terms “north” and “south” are figures of speech, which distort and oversimplify the reality that...

How Did Abraham Lincoln Considered To Be Divided

...political, economic and cultural differences between The North and The South. This quote by Abraham Lincoln really emphasises the division of The North and The South. Politics affected the division greatly. Politics is anything relating to the government's power or public affairs of a country, state, or region. The majority of Southerners were Democrats while the majority of Northerners were Republicans. Even today we have problems with are Democratic and Republican politicians not getting along. With all the conflicts going on and The North and The South hating each other the division was quite expected. Economics affected the division greatly. Economics means anything relating to the trade, industry, and creation of wealth of a country, state, or region. The North depended on factories to make common goods. The South depended on slaves to pick cotton for them and they would sell the cotton to...

Essay On The Causes Of The Civil War

...battle. From economic differences, to political disagreements, as well as friction from the northern and southern views on slavery put the nation to the brink of war. And growing sectionalism also caused problems within the two sides, until a fever pitch was inevitably hit. With the difference in economy, the growing sectionalism between the north and south, and the political disagreements, war was all but preventable. The economic differences between the north and the south were a major factor in the Civil War’s tension starting to build. Tariffs on imported good gave the north an economic advantage, as their exports were faster to make and more desired. While the south’s exports, mostly cotton, took time because of how...

Causes of the American Civil War

...War THE CAUSES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR I Introduction to Civil War II Social Causes A Differences in society B Westward Expansion III Economic Causes A Differences in economy B Westward Expansion IV Political Causes A Government V Aftermath A Costs of War CAUSES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR I. Introduction to Civil War The American Civil War was a war fought within the United States of America between the North (Union) and the South (Confederacy) starting from 1861 and ending in 1865. This war was one of the most destructive events in American history, costing more than 600,000 lives. It was thought to be one that helped shape the character of the American individual today. From the Southern point of view, this war was a War of Rebellion, or a War for Southern Independence. From the Northern point of view this war was seen as a revolution. This unfortunate war started as a result of many years of differences between the Union and the Confederacy. It erupted after many years of conflict building up between the two regions. Between the North and the South there lay deep economic, social and political differences, but it is important to understand that Slavery was the root of cause of these differences. II. Social Causes There were many factors that contributed to the onset of the Civil War. Socially, the North and the South were built on different standards. The South, or the Slave States, was a slave-based community that followed a class-based system. This system...

How Valid Is the View, All Things Considered, There Was More Uniting Than Dividing the North and the South in 1850?

...than dividing the North and the South in 1850? During 1850 America the gap between the North and the South was becoming more apparent. The obvious divide of social, culture and economics were forcing these sides ever further apart, sped up by the catalyst of slavery, the North and South could be described as not even one nation anymore. Yet despite these clear differences historians such as Bruce Cotton have stated that these current issues should not mask there deep uniting factors that made America such a powerful country. Their shared history, language and federal government, when considered, should outweigh these recent issues that were separating America in 1850. However as the civil war has shown these links were hidden behind the three main issues, of social, slavery and economics, dividing America in 1850. The view that the North and South was more united than divided is quite an invalid view because of the three main factors and the fact that the uniting factors could no longer hold America together. One of the key factors dividing the North and the South is the economical differences. The industrial difference is not actually a real dividing factor as both the North and the South started to industrialise and continued in agriculture, both just did such jobs on different scales than each other, with the South focused on cotton and sugar plantations with around 80% agriculture and the North focused on industry, such as factories, however the North still around 40%...

Slavery and Civil War

...Civil War was the result of conflictive ideologies between the Northern states and the Southern states. The North was abolitionist and heavily developed while the South was poorly industrialized and strongly dependent on agriculture. More than being a social issue slavery was the basis of economy in the Southern part of the United States. The problem was not about whether slavery was morally correct, but whether the South could economically survive without this type of labor; for Southerners slavery was an economical pillar and crucial for their subsistence, to the extent that it would rather fight or secede from the Union before giving up their profitable labor system. In contrast, the North was more densely populated and had more resources in terms of money, men, and supplies than the South did. Slavery for the North was not as necessary as it was for the rural South. Further more, the South was a strong believer of small national government and strongly advocated state rights over national laws, while the North was a strong supporter of federalism and believer in the Union with no option of secession or nullification, which was a common thread of Southern states against the Union. As all these differences grew bigger between the two, more issues and sectionalism emerged and finally led to the American civil war. To summarize, the American Civil War was caused by the differences between the North and the South leading to economic conflicts, as time passes, the Southern Sates seceding...

Seeing One Country as 2

...power without violence. The inauguration of Thomas Jefferson marked a time in history when things everywhere started to progress rapidly. The two dominant regions the North and South, looked like it would be bearable to work with each other and be able to discuss any problems with healthy debates. However as time progressed toward the 1860s, the North and South proved to differentiate among each other with few similarities. Economically, the North was based on manufacturing while the South was rural based. Socially, the North was generally anti-slavery while the South was pro-slavery. And lastly, politically, we see the return of the two party system. As for the comparisons, in the early nineteenth century, there was an explosion of economic, industrial and urban growth in most of the northern states. The development in the north was qualitative as well as quantitative growth, but growth in the southern states wasn't as dramatic, as it had more “intensive economic growth without any important changes in economic structures or techniques”, leading to the economic alienation of the southern states prior to the Civil War. Either way their growth was both naturally and rapidly. It is for these obvious and more important differences that we see at the end of the 1850s and the beginning of the 1860s such a divergence between these two regions which eventually lead to the civil war. After the United States gained its independence it was heavily dependent on other countries for manufactured...

Civil War Slavery Causes

...Slavery was one of the biggest causes of the Civil War. The moral, economic, and political differences between the North and South were significant. The Confederate or Southern economy heavily relied on slave labor to sustain plantations, particularly the production of cash crops. John C. Calhoun articulated the Southern view asserting the necessity of slave labor for the growth of the Southern economy, and the constitutional rights of slaveholders themselves. However, opposing Northerners such as William H. Seward condemned slavery as a moral evil of slavery and that it was not in line with the liberty and democracy that America was founded on. States’ rights versus federal authority was another deeply divisive issue in the 1850s. This issue...

Problems of Korean Unification

...After North and South Korea were divided along the 38th parallel, it has been continued for 70 years. The reunification of Korea has been controversial for decades, and the interest and expectation of unification has been growing after the reunification of Germany. As the expectation was growing, the problems that can be raised from the United Korea have been discussed (Cumings, 2010). Different political view, national economic status, and cultures between North and South Korea can cause serious problems, and it can possibly leads the United Korea to be undeveloped country. North Korea have been living in the communist political system. In North Korea, people are brainwashed in communism and restricted the basic human rights under severe monitoring system of government. Unlike North Korea, South Korea emphasizes the implementation of human dignity and support the freedom and equality by supporting the liberal democracy (Shuja, 2003). The extreme polarization of political view can cause staging a coup and even cause assimilating one to the other. The unification of Germany shows how the national unification cause a severe economic depression. The united Germany ended up mass unemployment, and the unemployment cause increasing in suicide rate (Kaiser). The critical different economic status and the cost of unification can result in economic aggravation. According to Woolf, "In then-current dollars, the estimates cover an enormous range between $400 billion and $3.6 trillion"...

Sexual Harrasment

...growing tension developed between the Northern and Southern states of America. That tension was primarily focused on the existence of slavery in the Southern states. Most Northern states had abolished slavery by 1850 and made a promise to the people to end slavery completely. They wanted the South to begin to become similar to the North, and to live under the concept of free labor, and not rely on slavery for productivity. The resentment for the interference of the North angered southerners because they felt that it was not the place of the federal government to interfere. Ever since the American Revolution sectional differences arose, the first being those favoring greater states rights and those favoring greater federal rights. Ever since the Revolution more and more dissimilarities arose between the North and the South due to differences in modernization and societal development. These different ideals caused tensions between the two sections and difficulties in staying together as a single union. The Southern ways of life were being targeted and altered by the North’s inconsiderate decisions of their societies foundation, though the North had a strong basis. The southern secession in 1860 was in direct result of the inability for the North and South to cooperate and coexist, and was the only possible alternative, in the minds of the southerners, for the different methods of living to remain. There were many aspects that varied among the North and South states that lead to the...

Civil War

...prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties. Every war has its reasons weather it be a good and acceptable reason or a bad reason. If people are going to be killed and the country itself be damaged because of the war, people will want to hear a reason. Some wars are inevitable and some are not. It all depends on its cause. The American Civil War is thought to be an inevitable war. Many are convinced that there was no other way to solve the tension between the North and the South. The difference in thinking of slavery of both sides was one of the reasons for the build up of the tension between the two sides but it was not the only reason as some may think. Economical differences and political differences also led to the tension between the two sided which resulted in a war. The war was considered inevitable because the South would not give up slavery, and the North would not let the South separate from the Union. The part slavery had on the Civil War cannot be ignored but it should not be responsible for the main cause. It was the difference in the North and the South that slavery created which led to the war. Slavery led to economic differences. In the South, slavery became a way of life. It was a large part of their society. Because they were farmers, they needed many workers to plant and gather. The South thought that if slavery was to be abolished, than their economy would fall because there would be no workers. In the North, slavery was not needed as much...

North and South

...In 1820, the North and South were somewhat different. By 1860, the North and South were on two different planets. What happened in the North and South to widen the differences? How did these changes affect the lives of all people in each section and their views on people in the other section? Be thorough and talk about economic, social, and cultural changes much more than political changes. The North and The South The North and South were very different by the 1860's. Several changes took place within the nation during this time from an onset of events happening after the 1820's. Inside of America, slavery became a major issue that tore the nation into two. Northerners favored equality for all, while contrarily Southerners supported the bondage of slaves to continue the labor of cotton productions, and ultimately, to ensure white supremacy. “After abolition in the North, slavery became the 'peculiar institution' of the of South – an institution unique to southern society” (417). This was also another large factor which shaped the regions. Overall, between the 1820's and 1860's, many economical, social, cultural and political changes happened which divided the nation into two. The occurrence of several events widened the differences between the North and the South. Despite the Northerners hopes that slavery would eventually die out and equality for all would regulate the nation, “the institution of slavery survived the crisis of the American Revolution and continued to...

What Are the Global ‘North’ and ‘South’ and Why They Are Increasingly Unrelated to Geographical Locations?

...What are the global ‘North’ and ‘South’ and why they are increasingly unrelated to geographical locations? Like many other concepts within the social sciences, globalisation is a highly debated and controversial issue with a diversity of opinions ranging across a broad spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, there are those who view globalisation as the source of many of the major social problems currently affecting developing countries. At the other, are those who view it as a process that will dissolve boundaries between nations and promote global unification. Similarly, definitions of the terms ‘Global North’ and ‘Global South’ are just as varied with the term ‘globalisation’ also carrying many different and often contrasting meanings. According to Modelski, Devezas and Thompson (2008, p.13), globalisation is not a new concept but rather, diachronic, or ‘a process in time’. The authors viewed globalisation as a historical process, the understanding of which required tracing it far back into the past (Modelski et al. 2008, p. 13). However, Heywood (2007, p. 143) suggests, that because globalisation refers to such a wide range of things, e.g. policies, strategies, processes or an ideology, it may be concluded ‘slippery and elusive’ understanding of globalisation arises from its involvement in so many different areas of academia and the extensive and continuing discussion therein surrounding its properties. Regardless of different views on the definition and scope of globalisation...
