Business Case: Efficiency, Opportunity Cost and the logic of lean Production at Boeing
Pg. 44 Ch.2

In the summer and fall of 2010, workers were rearranging the furniture in Boeing’s final assembly plant in Everett, Washington, in preparation for the production of the Boeing 767. It was a difficult and time-consuming process, however, because the items of “furniture”—Boeing’s assembly equipment—weighed on the order of
200 tons each. It was a necessary part of setting up a production system based on
“lean manufacturing,” also called “just-in-time” production. Lean manufacturing, pioneered by Toyota Motors of Japan, is based on the practice of having parts arrive on the factory floor just as they are needed for production. This reduces the amount of parts Boeing holds in inventory as well as the amount of the factory floor needed for production—in this case, reducing the square footage required for manufacture of the 767 by 40%.

Boeing had adopted lean manufacturing in 1999 in the manufacture of the
737, the most popular commercial airplane. By 2005, after constant refinement,
Boeing had achieved a 50% reduction in the time it takes to produce a plane and a nearly 60% reduction in parts inventory. An important feature is a continuously moving assembly line, moving products from one assembly team to the next at a steady pace and eliminating the need for workers to wander across the factory floor from task to task or in search of tools and parts.

Toyota’s lean production techniques have been the most widely adopted of all manufacturing techniques and have revolutionized manufacturing worldwide.
In simple terms, lean production is

Nol Case

...Individual write-up topic: If you were the CEO of NOL, would you buy APL? Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) is a shipping company established in Singapore since 1967. Thanks to the Asia’s and Singapore’s fast economic growth and to be present in the busiest shipping routes in the world, the company has grown very quick. However since 1990s, NOL has started to suffer due to a slowdown of the regional economic growth, excess capacity in the shipping industry, many competitors on this market and declining shipping rates. In 1996, the company has seen his net profit decreasing by 54% but the results seem to be worse. In order to change this bad situation happening to NOL, the company decided in April 1997 to acquire APL Company, leader in the US shipping line. APL was the oldest and the second largest shipping line in the USA. The company had the largest freight rail services in North America. Despite a smaller fleet than NOL, APL had higher revenue, profits, shipping volumes and the company was good in the innovation part. The acquisition of APL by NOL seems to be profitable for the Singapore shipping Company. But was it the good decision taken by NOL Company to acquire APL Company? If I was the CEO of Neptune Orient Lines Company, I would buy APL Company. Merger and Acquisition strategies had become more and more popular since 1990s. Indeed, using these strategies can help firms to face crisis. That is why NOL decided to use the acquisition strategy in order to overtake the problems...

...reason and RMB is appreciated therefore, other developing Asian countries will take the place of China through their undervalued currency, which would not benefit either the US nor China. Section II Our statement is based on the external and internal considerations for economies and politics of China and its major trade partners. * RMB appreciation will not necessarily reduce the other countries’ trade deficits. * Weak Link between Currency Values and Trade Flows: From 2001 to 2004, the RMB-US$ exchange rate was consistent, while the U.S. exports to China were increasing (See Figure 1). From July 2005 to July 2008, the RMB appreciated by 21 percent against the dollar while the U.S. trade deficit with China increased from $202 to $268 billion. * Nature of foreign trade is mutually beneficial and win-win. If RMB were appreciated, in the short-run the purchasing power of RMB could rise to a certain level which can be used to consume exported goods, but in the long-run this will cause many problems in Chinese society, a higher unemployment rate for instance. So in the long-term, this will hurt other countries’ exportation to China. It will...

Lcbo Case

...Privatizing this retail sector has been a reoccurring political issue since the early 1990’s. The most outstanding type of ownership for liquor markets has been an continuous question in Canadian politics. Should the sale of alcoholic beverages be accessible to private investment with operations guided by the profit motive? Or is it best placed under government monopoly, due to the exclusive characteristics of alcohol and/ or potential economic efficiencies? Like many beverage alcohol retail systems in Canada, Ontario’s system is characterized by a mix of both government and private sector retailers (Giesbrecht, Wettlaufer, Walker, Ialomiteau, & Stockwell, 2012). A majority of the provinces manage a publicly-owned and operated liquor distribution system, which some economists argue best provides the public interest. In contrast, privatization advocates claim that the implementation of competition among private vendors would bring efficiencies to the market which would ultimately benefit consumers due to easier access to alcohol as well as enhanced economic activity. Alberta is the most outstanding example of liquor privatization in Canada, where the government sold the province’s network of retail stores and fully relinquished the liquor market to private interests in 1993-1994 (Her et al., 1999). It has been documented in literature that public liquor monopolies exercise a much more prosperous system of liquor law compliance and enforcement in comparison with the private sector.In...

Effect of Globalization

...effect that it has on the “global village” and mostly on poor countries such as countries inside the Africa’s continent. These topics are raised as we discuss globalization as an economic culture and a source of conflict due to the imperative change in methods of production and consumption. What is globalization? There are a lot and different proposed definition of globalization as "the set of processes of global and regional integration" currently underway at the global level . One of the most successful definitions of “globalization” is the one given by the English sociologist Anthony Giddens . according to which the term refers to "the intensification of worldwide social relations which are able to link really distant localities, making sure that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa". Giddens believes that globalization has the characteristics typical of modernity , including the idea of the nation state, the capitalist economy, the division of labor and militarism. Globalization is thus essentially an expansion of the western Europe modernity and way of living expanded to the whole world on a global scale. It follows, then, that for Giddens, globalization and modernization coincide. The term was first used by economists , referring mostly to the economic aspects of the relationship between people...

Impact of Credit Crunch on Ibm

...14 Human Resource Capital 15 Research and Development 16 References 17 Bibliography 18 Introduction The ‘Credit Crunch’ emerged in 2007 with the first effects being felt by the U.S. Mortgage industry. The term ‘credit crunch’ came was used to describe the collapse of the subprime mortgage industry that resulted in a freeze in lending by financial institutions. With non-payment of loans, huge debt and no capital gains, financial institutions began to go under. Investment banks, financial services and real estate market felt immediate impacts. Trillions of U.S. dollars were lost, huge government bailouts were necessary and a global slowdown of consumer spending and economic activity. What are the major barriers to entry that explain the existence of monopoly? 3. What is the relationship between economies of scale and a natural monopoly? 4. Some economists argue that pure monopolists will purposely avoid the price-output combination that will maximize their profits. Explain how this less-than-maximum profit behavior could be rational. 5. In what ways, if any, do the demand schedules for a purely competitive firm and a pure monopolist differ? What significance does this have for the price-output behavior of each? 6. Why is marginal revenue less than price for every level of output except the first? 7. How does price elasticity affect the price-quantity combination and segment of the demand curve that the monopolist would prefer for price and output? 8. A pure monopolist determines that at the current level of output the marginal cost of production is $2.00, average variable costs are $2.75, and average total costs are $2.95. The marginal revenue is $2.75. What would you recommend that the monopolist do to maximize profits? 9. A pure monopolist sells output for $4.00 per unit at the current level of production. Business Proposal

...Business Proposal Ijeoma Onwuneme ECO 561 June 2nd, 2014 Introduction Within any industry the fiscal or economic goals are to increase revenue; determine the fixed and variable costs for the business; and determine how to maximize profit. In order to reach those goals an organization needs to establish the pricing structure, product differentiation, and how to minimize the costs for the product. In this proposal will layout the strategies to reach those goals in order to make a more economic successful organization. Company Background A sound prediction made by the organization is, in the very near future, society will be moving exclusively to digital. Books, news, magazines, TV shows, and movies the boom in digitalization will be grand and swift. Seeing a market for a unique form of digitalizing books and magazines the organization created a technology that allows for the printed word to be converted into a file that can be read digitally or listened to with a realistic sounding synthetic voice. The organization patented the technology and is currently competing against other organizations that offer similar services. The main competitor lies in an organization known as books on cd. This places the organization in monopolistic competition, which is, “characterized by a relatively large number of sellers producing differentiated products.” (McConnell, Brue, & & Flynn, 2009, p. 177) Currently, the organization is run out of a small venue, and...

...Macroeconomics BE-202 Exchange Rate Determination and Open Economy Macroeconomics Recall fiscal policy mainly works through consumption spending (C) and government spending (G). Monetary policy has a major impact on investment spending (I). Question: What is the major factor influencing net export? 1. Exchange Rates An exchange rate is the # of units of one currency trading for one unit of another currency. Example: Assume that 4 Euros (€) trade for 1 U.S. Dollar (USD). The exchange rate would be 4€/1USD = 4. Today: €4 = 1USD or €1 = 0.25USD Tomorrow: €2 = 1USD or €1 = 0.50USD When we can obtain more € per USD, the USD is said to appreciate against the €, or the € is said to depreciate against the USD. Point: Appreciation for one country’s currency implies depreciation for the other country’s currency. 2. Foreign Exchange Markets The price of one country’s currency in terms of another country’s currency will be along the vertical axis. Below this is the # of € that must be given up per USD. Summary Since the OECD’s first Economic Survey of China in 2005, China has continued to expand rapidly. The economy is also weathering the global crisis remarkably well, not least thanks to prompt and vigorous macroeconomic policy action. Economic expansion is projected to continue over the medium run, and China’s share in the world economy is set to grow further. Despite the recent decline in the current account surplus, some imbalances remain, notably an overly high national saving rate, but ongoing reforms can be expected to help alleviate them over time. Structural reform has continued on a broad front in recent years, with an increasing focus on the need for social cohesion. Even so, efforts are under way or still needed in a number of areas to sustain improvements in living standards over the longer run. Further upgrading the monetary policy framework. China’s monetary policy framework has gradually become more market-based, with money growth as the main intermediate target. Going forward, it...

Dualism Theories

...TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Dualism Theories 3. The Concept of Dualism in Economics 4. Does the concept of Dualism adequately portray the development picture in most developing countries? 5. Conclusion 6. Refrences INTRODUCTION Dualism is derived from the Latin word duo meaning "two"‬ denotes the state of two parts. The term 'dualism' was originally coined to denote co-eternal binary opposition, a meaning that is preserved in metaphysical and philosophical duality discourse but has been more generalized in other usages to indicate a system which contains two essential parts. Dualism is a major characteristic of an underdeveloped economy. Dualism refers to that condition of a country when two sectors advanced of modern sector and the backward or traditional exist side by side. For instance we have modern industries and the old cottage industries medieval farming being practiced at the same time. In other words, in an under developed country, there is the bullock cart economy and modern transport operating at the same time. DUALISM THEORIES Dualism theories assume a split of economic and social structures of different sectors so that they differ in organization, level of development, and goal structures. Usually, the concept of economic dualism differentiates between two sectors of economy: * The traditional subsistence sector consists of small-scale agriculture * True, handicraft and petty trade, has a...
