Edward Scissor Hands “The years spent in isolation have not equipped him with the tools necessary to judge right from wrong. He's had no context. He's been completely without guidance. Furthermore, his work - the garden sculptures, hairstyles and so forth - indicate that he's a highly imaginative... uh... character. It seems clear that his awareness of what we call reality is radically underdeveloped.” (IMDb) This quote comes form the psychologist who is talking to the character officer Allan during the middle of the movie which is after Edward is released from jail. For those who have not watched the movie Edward ScissorHands it is a comedy mixed with horror. The movie starts off with Kim tucking in her grandchild to go to bed. Kim's grandchild asked for a story so Kim told her the story of Edward the man who lives in the house on top of the mountain. The story starts off with Kim's mother Peg who is a door to door Avon sales women. She was having a rough day with no one wanting to buy the Avon products. Peg then decided to go up to the house on top of the mountain. When Peg arrives she is confronted by the beautiful garden. She then lets her self in to the house and finds Edward in the corner of the attic. Peg then takes Edward home were all the woman in the neighborhood are curious to find out who the mystery man is. One day when Kevin, Peg's husband is in the backyard Edward sees him cutting the hedges so Edward cuts the bush and makes it into a dinosaur. Peg then throws a barbeque after being pushed by the neighborhood woman to meet Edward. The night after the barbeque Edward meets Kim who he falls in love with. Once all the woman meet Edward he starts to do his art work in their yards after that Edward then starts to cut the dogs and woman's hair. One of the neighbors gets naked for Edward, after Edward is caught robbing Kim boyfriend Jim's house the neighbor then tells the women Edward raped her. Everyone except Peg family turns on Edward and pushes him to return to the house on mountain where Edward kills Jim for hitting Kim. Kim then tells the neighborhood Edward is dead then the story goes back to Kim and her grandchild. Kim then believes Edward is still alive for that it never snowed before he came down from the mountain(Edward). Edward is a product of his environment, which is seen by examining the characters, setting, and plot.
The Characters in the movie have a lot to do with how Edward and how Edward reacts. For instants Edwards Inventor was a lonely man. The Inventor ran a cookie making machine and while watching the machine the Inventor picked up a cookie heart and put it on the chest of one of his robots. The Inventor decided to make Edward for that the Inventor was a lonely man. When the Inventor made Edward he would read to Edward as if Edward was his own son. Toward the end of the movie the Inventor died of a heart attack before making Edward with hands which left Edward incomplete. Peg in the movie is seen by the audience as a nice, loving, and passion it mother. Peg effected his live by trying to provide Edward with regular family live. Peg also tells Edward that, “Blending is the secret.” which later lets the audience know in the movie Edward must blend in to the utopia that they live in for that he is different and people who do not understand fear what they do not know. Peg provided Edward with meals like lunch and dinner also here family would all gather around together to eat with each other that is something Edward had never experienced before. Peg was pushed in having the barbeque to which all the woman were crazy about getting to know him and soon after all the men and woman in the neighborhood came to love him. The woman in the neighborhood would show it by taking him to the store and one woman took him to a hair salon that she wanted to open up so that Edward could cut hair. Edward found love in one person which was Peg's daughter Kim. Edward loved him so much he would do anything for her even if it was bad to do like when Kim asked if he could break in to Jim's parents house. The robbery from Jim's house locked Edward in a room waiting the police to come and arrests him. When the police arrested Edward it scared him to the point were he would later become scared of the police. The character Jim is the character who made Edward express his anger. It was for that Jim looked at Edward as a freak and a joke. Jim would make fun of Edward by showing him that he could not have Kim for that Kim was Jim's girlfriend. From all these people Edward did not understand but these people where using him for their own good and were setting him up for failure. The Inventor created Edward for that he was a lonely man and he wanted some one to love, Peg thought she would be doing a good deed by bringing Edward home with her but what she did know was people were not ready for some one like Edward for that they would use Edward. The neighborhood used Edward for his lawn sculptures, dog grooming, and for a personal hairstylist. One of the woman in the neighborhood named Joyce try to even use Edward for her own pleasure by trying to have sexual intercourse with him, which later Joyce said that Edward forced her to take off her clothes by threatening her with his scissors and that he raped her. Joyce later at the end of the movie shows the audience the dangers of woman when Joyce rallies up a mob to chase after Edward when he fleas back to his house on top of the mountain. Joyce did all of this for that she did not get what she wanted from Edward. Kim used him for her to help out Jim. Toward the end of the movie all the characters push him to run back up the mountain to his house. They started spreading lies about Edward. This pushed him to go mad and start going though the neighborhood to terroris everyone. No one saw Edward for what he really was. Edward was just like a child all he really wanted was love and attention, for some one to under stand him and take care of him. The setting of the areas that Edward goes to and comes from has a lot to do with his behaviors.
The setting in the movie has a lot to do with how appearances can be devising and how different Edwards world is compared to the neighborhood. The audience is shown two different worlds when they see where Edward was made and where Peg lives. Edwards world is dark and gloomy. To help add with the feel of that his house is made out of Gothic architect, along with being on a hill that looks haunted. When you Peg drive up the hill the gate to let Peg up the road is destroyed and it looks like if no one is taking care of it. When Peg gets to the top she sees the beautiful garden Edward maintains. In the middle of the garden Edward made a huge hand which shows he just wishes to be normal and be able to touch everything and feel everything like a normal person. Along with the house Edwards clothes are has the same look as the house does. He dresses in Gothic clothing, Edward is even all in black and is very pail compared to Peg and everyone of the neighbors. Edwards just shows how different he is compared to the people at the bottom of the mountain. The way Tim Burton uses camera angles at Edwards house shows the happiness of the color full homes at the bottom of the mountain. As the audience can see as well for the utopia how gloomy and dark Edward's house is. From the camera angles alone showing the two different worlds audience can see how socially awkward these two worlds can be. The other wold which Peg and Kim come from is like a utopia. All the houses are the same architect and are painted in very bright colors. The houses are very similar in the neighborhood they all live in for that all the lawns are maintained and all the houses look like a perfect family environment. It shows the 1950's time period where middle class family's were moving out of the city to residential areas to get away from the threatening elements the city had. Every character in the neighborhood wears extremely bright color clothes as seen during the barbeque. The men during the barbeque as the audience can see they are all wearing traditional working uniforms, furthermore; the woman at the barbeque are all dressed up with their hair groomed. This shows that the men and woman here in the neighborhood are stuck on transgender roles. This means that the men go to work while the women stay home watch the kids, cook, clean, and does the laundry, while the men go to work and come home at night expecting dinner on the table. This is seen after Peg brings Edward to her home. During the scene all the women are outside Peg's house trying to figure out who she brought home, when you see all the men start driving home from work and then all the woman rush to their houses to greet their husbands. During the movie Peg try's to make Edward fit in but as audience can see he is having a lot of trouble trying to fit in the customs of the American dream. It shows Edward in many scene like when he was trying to figure out why the bed was moving, he had never seen a water bed before, or when Edward and Peg go to the bank the bank teller told Peg an Edward that he had no social security number, no credit, and that he basically did not exist. Edward did not understand any of society and how it worked to live in the real world. All he understood was helping people and the ones he loved. It is shown in a scene when the family is all sitting down for dinner after Edward was just released from jail. Peg's husband asked Edward a question to see what his reaction would be. The question was,”Ed if you found a beif case full of money on the side of the street and if there was no possible witnesses to see you take the beif case what would you do with it? A. would you give it to your loved ones. B. would you give it to the police. C. would you keep it for yourself.”Edward would later says he would give it to his loved one. Edward really just knows how to love and be a nice person. The time period this movie took place in has a lot to do with how everyone is as well. For how it has its gender roles, how everyone talks by the old hard line house phone, and how Edward goes on television discussing how he is and sculptures. If the time period were have been now in this day and age the characters would be talking on cell phones and the Inventor instead of Edward would probably be making Iron Man suits.

Edward is a product of his environment from everyone he encounterd. Jim is the who made everyone think he was a bad person. As seen on the cover of the movie though or posters of the movie Edward is a gentle person who was made bad from the people who entered his life. Many children today are shaped by the people they associate with and their own parents. Teenagers could go bad after the peer pressure of friends to do drugs or even end up hating the world for their parents die when they were really young, or if the child or teen was raped from a relative at a really young age. Juviniles that go into boot camps or rehabilitation centers their own parents some times end up leaving them to fend for them selves. Not only Edward is shaped by society today it is young children and teenagers to. Peoples lives have great impact on one an other. No matter who any one is everyone should treat others the way they want to be treated as well as being kind to one an other and leading a helping hand when some one needs it, so no matter what people should not be so quick to judge and should be kind and help one an other for that they might not know how far that will go in some ones life.

Self Evaluation
I really liked Edward scissor hands when I was a kid plus I thought this would be a good topic to write on. I first was going to write on how science created the monster but thought that would not really fit the movie that well so I picked a different topic. I had trouble coming up with ideas of what to write about and how to cite the movie correctly.
