Effective Study Skills are the sole foundation of a Sound Education

Education generally occurs through any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks or feels. “In a narrow technical sense it is a formal process by which society deliberately transmits it’s accumulated knowledge, skills customs and values from one generation to another e.g. instruction in schools” (Wikipedia). There are many factors that create a foundation for acquiring a sound education, economic, cultural, biological and environmental. For people returning to study or experiencing academic study for the first time, learning ‘study skills’ enhances their ability to succeed. The acquisition of knowledge will always require study whether practically or academically. Skill, as defined by the Merriam / Webster Online Dictionary, is the ability to use ones knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance. Devine (1978), wrote that “study skills encompass a range of coordinated cognitive skills and processes that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of students learning”. Good study skills will facilitate learning, enhance memory of materials, heighten understanding of concepts, and help students understand critical and analytical processes and also to learn to explore both sides of an issue to form conclusions or hypothesis. Gettinger and Seibert (2008), having reviewed many academic studies on the impact of teaching study skills to students state “Study skills are fundamental to academic competence.

...For the exclusive use of S. Kaya, 2015. Harvard Business School 9-595-057 Rev. March 30, 2001 The Black & Decker Corporation (A): Power Tools Division Joe, I like you guys. But, look, I give Makita 10 feet of space. I give you 10 feet of space. They outsell you 8 to 1. What are we going to do about that? In January 1991, statements like this no longer surprise Joseph Galli. Black & Decker’s (B&D) vice president of sales and marketing for power tools had heard similar sentiments expressed by many trade accounts. Makita Electric of Japan had practically taken over the professional power tools for tradesmen business since it entered the United States market a decade ago. “Tradesmen” was one of the three major segments of the power tools business—the others being “Consumer” and “Industrial.” “Consumer” represented “at home” use, while both “Tradesmen” and “Industrial” covered professional users. The distinguishing characteristic of the Tradesmen segment was that these buyers, such as a carpenter, bought tools for their own use on a job site. In Industrial, the buyer was generally a corporation purchasing tools for use by employees. By late 1990, Makita’s success in the Professional-Tradesmen segment was such that it held an 80% share in cordless drills, the single largest product category, and a 50% segment share overall. B&D had virtually created the portable power tools business in the United States beginning in the early 1900s. While it maintained the #1 ...

Research an Development

...WHAT IS R&D ? Research and development (R&D, also called research and technical development or research and technological development, RTD inEurope) is a specific group of activities within a business. The activities that are classified as R&D differ from company to company, but there are two primary models. In one model, the primary function of an R&D group is to develop new products; in the other model, the primary function of an R&D group is to discover and create new knowledge about scientific and technological topics for the purpose of uncovering and enabling development of valuable new products, processes, and services. Under both models, R&D differs from the vast majority of a company's activities which are intended to yield nearly immediate profit or immediate improvements in operations and involve little uncertainty as to the return on investment (ROI). The first model of R&D is generally staffed by engineers while the second model may be staffed with industrial scientists. R&D activities are carried out by corporate (businesses) or governmental entities. R&D is a form of applied research. BACKGROUND New product design and development is more often than not a crucial factor in the survival of a company. In an industry that is changing fast, firms must continually revise their design and range of products. This is necessary due to continuous technology change and development as well as other competitors and the changing preference...

This climate’s condition is actually very vital in the daily living of the people, as its impacts and effects to all parts of the world; as well as to the people living on earth. Climate change is the state where there are climate variations that result to great impacts on human activity. In this connection, the impacts of climate change on the study habits of the students have caught the attention of the concerned sectors of the government in every country. One of the effects of climate change is drought, which results into the growing need of food sustainability in many areas of a country. It adversely affects the students’ learning and other performances in the school. Business Correspondence

...time during the last three or four decades have the communication skills of individuals in the business world come under closer scrutiny than today. And never before have those who work in the business world needed better, more effective communication skills. The emerging technology appears to be increasing, rather than decreasing, the need for effective communication skills. As more individuals have ready access to desk-top equipment to process written communication, fewer support personnel will be readily available to provide editing assistance. Therefore, welldeveloped communication skills among originators are more important to success than ever before. This book is suitable for several different audiences, including undergraduate and graduate students. The organization of this manual is a logic sequence of chapters including both business communication and correspondence. The first part is dedicated to business communication and the second to business correspondence. The special features found in this edition are: 1. Examples of effective letter writing. Studies have shown students studying written business communication can learn as much, if not more, from ineffective examples of written communication as they do from effective examples. 2. Varied application problems in the writing-oriented chapters. The number of problems has been increased. While the majority of problems require the writing of a letter or report, some are designed to give students...
