...Introduction: Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) implies markets to be rational, incorporating new information to reflect in stock prices rapidly, considering direction and size of the share price movement. Consequently, leaving no opportunities for investors to beat the market and acquire abnormal returns. Predictable information raises the stock prices prior to its occurrence, and rapidly adjusting at the event date. Addendum to EMH, Random Walk Theory proposes market prices abide no pressure from past-price movements thus pursue a random course, making impossible to forecast future-price movements as they are an independent of past-prices. Fama (1970) establish three-level grading system portraying degree of market efficiency, based on investment approach endowing abnormal returns: Market anomalies are inconsistent with EMH and a consequence of deviations and incomprehensible patterns in smooth running of stock markets. Anomalies are statistically considerable and additionally proffer investors with risk adjusted economic returns. Once documented and scrutinized in literature, anomalies tend to disappear, overturn, or attenuate; doubting their subsistence in past, as being statistical irregularity, or have been arbitraged away. This essay will begin by defining limitations of CAPM and introduce three-factor model. Additionally, it will discuss the fundamental anomalies (Value and Size effects), calendar anomalies (January, Weekend and Time-of-the-month effects) and...

...Vol. 5, No. 11 Asian Social Science Impact of Training on Earnings: Evidence from Pakistani Industries Zainab Javied Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi E-mail: zainab_javied2000@yahoo.com Asma Hyder (Corresponding author) Assistant Professor NUST Business School, Islamabad E-mail: baloch.asma@gmail.com Abstract Training and skills development play a vital role in individual’s productive capacity and are integral part of Human Resource Development (HRD). This study aims to examine the role of training in determination of wages. By utilizing the cross-sectional data from Labor Force Survey 2005-06, results have shown that training is not significant in the determination of wages, which shows the poor quality of training in the overall economy. Results were obtained by Ordinary Least Square (OLS) technique. However, schooling and other demographic variables have expected signs and magnitudes. The recommendations of the study based on empirical findings are toward technical education and vocational training institutions; they should ideally have to devise their technical education and vocational training exactly according to the requirements of industry. Empirical results also emphasize to improve the quality of training. Keywords: Wages, Investment in human capital, Training, Cross-section data, Industries, Developing country 1. ...developing market economies are moving to the forefront of the world market, diminishing the dominance of developed countries. Their rapid expansion is often underpinned by strong domestic firm performance. The resources and funds required to fuel the sustained future growth of these firms as they compete with global powerhouses from developed markets therefore become important factors. In recent decades the process of globalization has made it increasingly common for developing country firms to internationalize and gain access to developed country capital markets. Developping countries are playing a significant role in the developpment of their home-country economies because of a higher use of external financement, which could give these firms the opportunity of operating in countries with more developped financial markets and a better access to external funds. In addition, developed financial markets can reduce the problem of asymmetric information. To evaluate the role that both the level of financial market development and firm-level characteristics have in the relationship between internationalization and debt financing, they employ three-variable interactions. The purpose was to find out how the relationship between the level of foreign sales and financial development differs for types of firms as classified by levels of financial constraint and asymmetric information. It reveals that firms from developing countries that expand into international markets have better...

...OFFERINGS: EVIDENCE FROM THE SINGAPORE IPO MARKET VOON PEIJUN (Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons), NUS) A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF SCIENCE (BUSINESS) DEPART DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE 2009 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my warmest gratitude to Professor Michael Shih for his patient guidance and encouragement all this while. A very big thank you, Sir. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my family for their love and concern all these years. Thank you Dad, Mum and Brother. Without their support, I would not have come so far. Thank you! Voon Peijun 2009 Page i ABSTRACT The study explores the role of issue managers in the initial public offering (IPO) process. Empirical research shows that IPOs are associated with two significant market anomalies: short-run underpricing puzzle and long-run underperformance phenomenon. This paper examines the reputational influence of issue managers on the two anomalies. Employing the newly developed ‘twelve-month rolling’ reputation ranking approach, our study is the first to furnish a comprehensive ranking of all the issue managers with a substantial presence in Singapore. Based on a sample of 384 IPOs listed on the Singapore Exchange between January 1, 1997 and August 22, 2008, we find evidence of prevalent short-run underpricing and long-run underperformance in the domestic market. Our findings indicate that the IPOs backed...

...Innovations and Inclusive Growth A Case of Banking Industry in India Kiran Kumar Kakarlapudi Background and Motivation India has entered high growth trajectory with the initiation of economic reforms in the early 1990s with a policy shift towards free market economy.1 While on the growth front, the economy has performed considerably well, on the other hand the issue of distributional effects of growth has gained momentum in the academic and policy environment. Thus, in the eleventh and twelfth five year plans, emphasis has been laid to achieve sustainable economic growth with inclusive development (Singh, 2011). The empirical evidences on India’s growth pattern show that, the fantabulous growth performance, to a large extent, is driven by high growth in the service sector which has grown at 8.1 percent per annum during 1990-91 to 2007-08. Similarly, the share of service sector Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased from less than half to 68 percent in 2007-08 (Acharya, 2008). 2 The insights from the studies on service sector growth in India reveal that the spurt in the service growth is driven by the rapid growth of business services (which include Information Technology), communication services, financial services, hotels and restaurants, and trade (distribution) services, which is facilitated by the advent and rapid diffusion of information technology (Gordon and Gupta, 2004; Banga, 2005; Verma, 2006; Eichengreen and Gupta, 2010).3 Further, it has been argued that, rapid...

...important to examine how far accounting has been successful in imitating natural science and how the development of PAT compares with the three standard accounts of science. This paper shows that accounting could not emulate the success of natural science. Further, the methodological positions of PAT conform to none of the standard accounts of science. Rather, PAT contains elements of all three. Finally, this paper identifies some methodological gaps in PAT. ...Road, Off Raiwind Road, Lahore, Pakistan E-mail: talatafza@ciitlahore.edu.pk Hammad Hassan Mirza COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Park Road, Chak Shahzad, Islamabad, Pakistan E-mail: al_hammd@hotmail.com Abstracts Dividend Policy is among the widely addressed topics in modern financial literature. The inconclusiveness of the theories on importance of dividend in determining firm’s value has made it one of the most debatable topics for the researchers (see for example, Ramcharan, 2001; Frankfurter et. al 2002; Al-Malkawi, 2007). The present study investigates the impact of firm specific characteristics on corporate dividend behavior in emerging economy of Pakistan. Three years data (2005-2007) of 100 companies listed at Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) has been analyzed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The results show that managerial and individual ownership, cash flow sensitivity, size and leverage are negatively whereas, operating cash-flow and profitability are positively related to cash dividend. Managerial ownership, individual ownership, operating cash flow and size are the most significant determinants of dividend behavior whereas, leverage and cash flow sensitivity do not contribute significantly in determining the level of corporate dividend payment in the firms studied in our sample. Estimated results are robust to alternative proxy of dividend behavior i.e. dividend intensity. Keywords: Dividend Policy, Ownership Structure, Cash Flow, OLS Regression...
