External conflicts imply that there are outside obstacles one must go through, and making themselves their own obstacle is not beneficial. On many occasions, people go through societal struggles along with image struggles, yet they should be accepting of their situations rather than face false hope. For example, Eleanor Longden must go through the way society views her and other people with mental illnesses. Although she seemed normal, she struggles with often aggressive and hostile voices which represented her inner turmoil. But, she began to respect the voices and they became less hostile. Acceptance, healing, understanding- these are the ways in which Longden was able to prevent herself from becoming an obstacle and achieve greatness. By
