The renaissance or rebirth was considered a bridge between the middle ages and modern history. Alot of famous people such as Leonardo da Vinci, Masaccio, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Raphael, Michelangelo, shaped todays modern art, science, architecture, music, sculptures, and math. The renaissance lasted from the 14th century to the 17th century. In that period of time the world as we know it was defined and shaped. Leonardo grew up on his father’s family’s estate where he was treated as a legitimate son and received the usual elementary education of that day which was reading, writing, and arithmetic. Leonardo did not seriously study Latin, the key language of traditional learning, until much later, when he acquired a working knowledge of it on his own. He is well known for his paintings the last supper and the mono Lisa. His notebooks were filled with scientific inquiries and mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time. He was invited to Milan to build a horse statue which took him 12 years. The reason it took so long was that there was a war and the bronze that was supposed to be used for the horse statue was taken and used for cannons therefore the horse was made out of clay and the ensuing war left the statue in ruins. The 16th century reformation was not unpreceded. Reformers in the medieval church addressed aspects in life well before 1517. One of the most famous people from the reformation was martin Luther. The Protestant Reformation lasted from 1517 to 1648. During the Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church was an extremely powerful, unifying force of the people. As a result, the pope acted as the intermediary between men and God. As the Church gained more and more power it began to use corrupt methods to earn money and control the mass. When the Church needed to finance its large building projects for Renaissance artists it sold indulgences. Indulgences were "tickets" that saved humans from going to the purgatory. Land owning nobles' wealth and power were being exploited as the Church grew. This set the stage confrontation of those called Protestants to the corrupt nature of the Catholic Church.
