Michael Faraday

Michael Faraday was born on 22 September 1791 and died in 25 August 1867. He was an English scientist who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include those of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis. Faraday’s family was not well off. He received only a basic formal education. When he was 14, he got a job in a bookstore, and spent all of his time reading books. In 1813, Faraday got the job of the chemical assistant at the Royal Institution. In 1831, Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind the electric transformer and generator. This discovery was crucial in allowing electricity to be transformed from a curiosity into a powerful new technology. During the remainder of the decade he worked on developing his ideas about electricity. He was partly responsible for coining many familiar words including 'electrode', 'cathode' and 'ion'. Faraday's scientific knowledge was harnessed for practical use through various official appointments, including scientific adviser to Trinity House (1836-1865) and Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (1830-1851). However, in the early 1840s, Faraday's health began to deteriorate and he did less research. He died on 25 August 1867 at Hampton Court, where he had been given official lodgings in recognition of his contribution to science. He gave his name to the 'farad', originally describing a unit of electrical charge but later a unit of electrical capacitance.
Construction
The electric generator consists of a tube of neutral material wound with a coil of wire, insulated in cotton, and a bar magnet. Faraday connected his apparatus to a galvanometer (an instrument that detects electrical current) and discovered that when he passed the magnet back and forth through the coil of wire, which remained stationary, the needle of the galvanometer leapt into action registering a current flowing. As the magnet moves the lines of magnetic force repeatedly intersect with the wire exciting the electrons in the wire and generating electrical current. So if you exchanged the galvanometer with a light bulb today you would see it light up.
Function
An electric generator is a device that converts mechanical energy obtained from an external source into electrical energy as the output. It is important to understand that a generator does not actually 'create' electrical energy. Instead, it uses the mechanical energy supplied to it to force the movement of electric charges present in the wire of its windings through an external electric circuit.

Benefits

The electric generator developed by Faraday provided the basis for many scientists to develop the modern one that we use today. Nowadays we use electric generators to operate motor vehicles, bicycles and sailboats.

Acknowledgement

Scientists and physicists applaud Faraday on his revolutionary work. James Clerk Maxwell took the work of Faraday and others, and summarized it in a set of equations that is accepted as the basis of all modern theories of electromagnetic phenomena. Albert Einstein kept a picture of Faraday on his study wall, alongside pictures of Isaac Newton and James Clerk Maxwell. Physicist Ernest Rutherford stated; "When we consider the magnitude and extent of his discoveries and their influence on the progress of science and of industry, there is no honour too great to pay to the memory of Faraday, one of the greatest scientific discoverers of all time”.

In summation, Michael Faraday innovative physicist who forever changed the world of mechanics with the invention of the electric generator.

Pedal Powered Charger

...huma/mechanical energy or pedal power with the use of our Bicycle Charger. A Pedal Powered generator provides a method of generating electricity by means of a modified exercise bike for use in energy storage and running portable devices. Human.mechanical energy is converted by a belt-liked cloth to a bike dick brake. The energy created by the DC generator can be stored in various types of lead-acid batteries. Energy stored in battery form can act as a supplemental energy source for battery banks that may already bu used for wind, hydro and photovoltaic systems. Also, energy that is stored within the lead-acid battery can be utilizrd as DC current for use in DC appliances such as those found in automotive mobile homes. If Alternating Current (AC) appliances are in place then an inventer must be used to transfer the 12 volts of DC current into the standard 110 volts of AC current for usage by these appliances. Pedal power is the source of getting energy from humans. It can be described as the transfer of energy generated through the movement of human feet and hands in some cases. Humans used the pedal power to impel bicycles for centuries. In the primeval time all the machinery was manual and required the physocal energy to run them. This use of pedal power proved to be really helpful to perform even hard labor tasks. Pedal power was the base of the industry for many years. The idea of pedal power generators emerged from the wind turbines. Recent trend towards the use of bicycle again has...

In fact, electricity did not begin when Benjamin Franklin at when he flew his kite during a thunderstorm or when light bulbs were installed in houses all around the world. The truth is that electricity has always been around because it naturally exists in the world. Lightning, for instance, is simply a flow of electrons between the ground and the clouds. Epileptic Power Supply in Nigeria

...Africa. The epileptic nature of power supply in Nigeria is to say the least, neither accidental nor inexplicable neither without solution. This age long issue of power supply has witnessed massive transformations which were designed to boost the power generation in the country and improve the supply of electricity, but the end result of those transforms seem to be mere change of name from its inception name of Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) to National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and now to its present name – Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). These various changes were perhaps measures implemented by various political and ruling class’ to supposedly ameliorate or ‘cure’ the epileptic nature of electricity situation in spite of the huge financial commitments on the part of successive governments into the implementation of these transformations. It is however on record that Nigeria with her teaming population of about 140 million of the world’s estimated population of 6 billion has a total electric generation that is being consumed and generated by a city like Dollars in the United States. It has also been discovered that Kainji Dam has the potential and capacity to exceed its present utility capacity...

Diy Magnetic Generator

...Permanent Magnetic Generator Construction Manual http://HoJoMotor.com Our Team Doing an On-site Assembly in Peru http://HoJoMotor.com Section 1) Introduction This manual describes how to build a 'permanent magnet generator' (PMG). We can also call it an 'alternator', because it generates alternating current (AC). It will not generate 'mains voltage' or 'utility power' AC. It generates low voltage, 'three phase' AC, and then changes it into 'direct current' (DC) for charging a 12 volt battery. What this PMG is made of 1) EXPLODED PMG The PMG (see diagram 1) consists of: • • • • A steel spine and shaft. A stator containing coils of wire Two magnet rotors A rectifier The stator contains six coils of copper wire, cast in fiberglass resin. This stator casting is mounted onto the spine; it does not move. Wires from the coils take electricity to the rectifier, which changes the AC to DC for charging the battery. The rectifier is mounted on an aluminum 'heatsink' to keep it cool. http://HoJoMotor.com The magnet rotors are mounted on bearings, which turn on the shaft. The rear rotor is behind the stator, and enclosed within it. The front one is on the outside, fixed to the rear one by long studs which pass through a hole in the stator. The wind turbine rotor blades will be mounted on the same studs. They will turn the magnet rotors, and move the magnets past the coils. Magnetic flux passes from one rotor to the other through the stator. This moving magnetic flux...

Niagara Falls

...astonishing waterfalls . While it is a huge tourist destination for about 22 million people, it's not the only use(Lopez 2007). It's one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It has beautiful scenery and it's a breathe taking experience, but it has been modified for the use of hydropower(Lopez 2007). Beginning as a natural wonder of the world, it started after The Ice Age. Ice melted over, and drained into Niagara River, which caused erosion onto the cliffs between Lewiston, New York and Canada. With this now happening, it created what we now know as Niagara Falls (Niagarafallsstatepark.com, 2014). Niagara Falls isn't just one of the most beautiful places in the world but it is also puts out over 2.5 million kilowatts of hydro electric power, enough to power 24 million 100-watt light bulbs.(Lopez 2007). In 1950, the United States and Canada came to an agreement about the hydropower production from Niagara Falls. Inside of the agreement it included equal parts of hydro power, along with how much water is allowed to flow and also the scheduled months and times (Lopez 2007). In the agreement, the Canadian power stations draw 56,500 cubic feet of water per second and the American power stations draw 32,500 cubic feet of water per second. The flow rates of water are monitored by Ontario Hydro through a sensing devices on both the Rainbow International Bridge and the Whirlpool International Bridge. During the peak months of tourism, more water is on during the day and...

Contractual Innovation in the Uk Energy Markets

...from increasing its own electricity generation capacity? The regulation prevents RECs from vertical integration by setting limits of generation capacity to each RECs. Eastern’s generation capacity is capped at 1,000 MW. With existing capacity of 850MW, Eastern is unlikely be able to aggressively increase its own electricity generation capacity. 3. What were the main reasons for Enron to enter into the agreement with Eastern to receive gas and supply the value of electricity rather than operate simply as an independent power plant (IPP)? An IPP needs four contracts to transfer various risks in the project. One of the contracts is power purchase agreement (PPA), which would eliminate electric price risk. Without PPA, an IPP would become a merchant power plant (MPP) which retains gas and/or electric price exposure. In U.K.’s deregulated market, Enron’s counterparty for the PPA agreement would be private companies. However, private companies were reluctant to sing long term PPA contracts because they had lost money when technological changes lowered generating costs before the contracted...
