The devastation from tsunamis, mudslides, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, super storms, and terroristic attacks impacts the lives of millions, and the affects will be felt for generations. A "disaster is an event that causes a level of destruction, death, or injury that affects the abilities of the community to respond to the incident using available resources" (Nies & McEwen, 2011, p. 562). The state of Texas has experienced severe drought conditions for several years. Severe drought conditions place Texas at high risk for wildfires and flooding. In 2011 Texas experienced the most devastating wildfire season the state has seen in years. The worst wildfire in the state's history "broke out in Bastrop County on Sept. 4, a hot, dry, windy Sunday afternoon. Before firefighters got it contained, the Bastrop County Complex Fire covered some 34,000 acres, claimed two lives and destroyed more than 1,600 homes" (Fountain & Nottingham, 2011, n.p.). Extreme drought conditions placed professional and volunteer firefighters on high alert; as red flag warnings posted, and threats of dangerous fire conditions continued. Before entering students should know the proper rules and procedures ahead of time in case of an emergency. ...Before joining the Fire Department, I didn’t have a clue as to what it entailed. I knew that committing to the department wasn’t going to be casual; still I was surprised as to how much it demanded from me. In order to learn how to act during emergency situations, there were monthly company drills (training exercises) that we were required to attend. Sometimes the training was very intense, although they were highly controlled, it was always dangerous. A common exercise was entering a multi-storied building with fires at various locations, which we had to find and put out. The drill was highly teamwork oriented and required concise communication in making our way around. Other drills ranged from practicing force-entry into buildings to getting into full turnout gear with an SCBA ready to use. We had even purchased a junkyard car to set on fire in order to practice putting out car fires. Many of the fire related calls were minor or false alarms. Although there were some actual fire crises, many of the emergencies were medical. Some people are surprised to find out that the local fire department runs many of the ambulances. Some calls I responded to were: overdoses, heart attacks, and the elderly falling in their home. Usually an EMT on scene would check the patient and decide whether or not they needed hospitalization. The EMS workers were pretty much controlling all the emergency scenes, which is why the outcomes at the end are what they turn out to be. For example, there was a section in the station where all the calls and dispatch information was received called the Watch Office. Here, one of the volunteers also gave me the opportunity to see an example of a dispatch print out. When I first saw it, I was confused about what the information on it meant exactly. The volunteer then kindly explained what each and every piece of information on the page meant. Observing the Watch Office made me realize that technology has made everything so much easier for emergencies. As calls are received in the offices, the numbers and locations are tracked down. One of the volunteers told me that they don’t need to do much interrogation now, as everything is automatically tracked down and brought into their system, which then allows the dispatch to print everything out. Another thing I observed was that all of the people working at the station were very coordinated and cooperative. They were very organized and all the calls that they were receiving were transferred down to the appropriate units that needed to help them out.
