Emotional Climate: My Impact On The Group Setting

Emotional Climate:
The overall feeling in the room felt relax. Some individuals may have displayed some anxiety, observed individuals biting their nails and shaking their legs rapidly.
Demographics:
There were men and women. Age range was between 21 and 65. Majority of the participants had visible tattoos. Everyone appeared to be appropriately dressed for a group setting. In the group 15% were minorities.
Behavioral Results: Group Scan: 10:00 am group: The group is announced. There are 3 male Clients already sitting in the room appearing to be waiting for the group to start. The men appeared to be in their mid-40’s and older. All three are sitting in the back of the group room, however they are sitting apart. One male is reading …show more content…
The Clinicians often sit in on one another groups to provide feedback weekly in efforts to improve our quality of work. The participants are accustomed to other Clinicians sitting in on groups topics.
Interpretation of Results
There have been some group norms that have been established amongst this group. The seating arrangement. The women have to sit in the front row, however everyone goes to their seat with intention as if they were assigned seating. “Norms are acceptable standards of behavior within a group that are shared with each participant of the group. They define the boundaries of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. They make behavior more predictable, avoid embarrassing situations, and express the values of the group. Each group will establish its own set of norms that might determine anything from the appropriate dress to how many comments to make a meeting. The norms often reflect the level of commitment, motivation, and performance of the group.” (Gupta, A. 2015) The group has established a norm to where they are seated. In efforts for group therapy to work there has to be trust that develops among group members. According to Lonergan’s there are 4 states of being in a group which he calls the Transcendental Percepts. “… to be attentive, having an awareness or mindfulness that is linked to the experience; be understanding, having an openness to learning and knowledge that is linked to understanding; be reasonable, the development of critical thinking that is linked to judging; and be responsible, a change in behavior that is linked to acting.” (Whatley, L. R. 2012). This allows for there to be a level of trust among the participants in the group. However, this group does not demonstrate that there is a level of trust developed between them.
