Emotional Intelligence In Part 5 Summary

Goleman (2005) uses proven research to back up his suggestions on emotional intelligence. Using real life situations, he is able to highlight emotional intelligence and the lack there of. He describes current problems and offers research based solutions. The solutions he offers begin in childhood and continue in adulthood. In Part One, Goleman (2005) begins his guided journey into emotional intelligence by sharing the scientific research available on the emotional architecture of the brain. He describes the interconnection of the limbic system and the neocortex. The limbic system regulates feelings of pleasure, desire, learning, and memory. Whereas, the neocortex is in charge of fine tuning, strategizing, and long-term planning.

Deficiencies in mastering emotional intelligence heightens risks such as depression, violence, eating disorders, and drug abuse. Goleman (2005) discusses the rise in the number of children seeking psychiatric help for depression. Stating that future generations have “…a higher risk than their parents of suffering a major depression—not just sadness, but a paralyzing listlessness, dejection, and self-pity, and overwhelming hopelessness…” (p. 240) that may plague them at any given moment in their lives. The author heeds a warning that if this overwhelming hopelessness increases to the extent you see a failure as something that is lasting and which you magnify to taint everything in your life, you are prone to let a momentary defeat become a lasting source of hopelessness. But if you have a larger perspective, like a belief in God and an afterlife, and you lose your job, it’s just a temporary defeat. (Goleman, 2005, p. 241) These temporary defeats can be overcome quickly through the practice of emotional intelligence. The author suggests prevention and intervention as soon as possible.
According to Goleman (2005), our emotions and the emotions of those around us are out of control, so he wrote this book as a guide to try and make sense of the senseless. He states the
