...super March 6th 1995 was the day I saw the world for the first time. I had absolutely no idea where I was and who all were surrounding me. The only thing I could feel was lovely warmth from someone. When she touched me I felt a spark; a spark of love. As a young infant I knew she was the one who would have an impact on me, my mother, as a friend, as a sister and as a mother. She has done everything that she can do for me and for my success. I took my first step by holding her hand. She was the first person in the world to figure out what was on my mind. Her words were always inspiring for me. She was strong in her opinion and her words were always a motivation for me. She taught me to go far with my dreams and how to open the doors of success. A very independent woman she is. Even though she suffers from migraine headaches, she does as much as any other person. She cleans, cooks, and makes sure her family has what we need. She does not sit around and try to rely on anybody, buy she knows that her family has her back. I’m always willing to help my mother out when she needs it because I know she would do the same for me. She is the reason I love to try to do things on my own and not try to depend on anybody else unless I have too. My mom has always been there for the best and worst situations in my life. When I was sick with a fever my mom sat with me all night watching me without sleeping. I asked her “why can’t you go to bed”. She told me who is going to take care...

...Pair O’Socks I am highly unworthy of speaking of such greatness that I should be the last person in the universe to tell of Pair O’Socks. I should not have the right to praise someone so divine and important to mankind because no one or even I will ever measure up to his superiority and standards. Not a second passes where he is not running through my mind, and one day, everyone will praise and think about Pair O’Socks as much as I do. I cannot imagine a life without someone so special and kind such as Pair O’Socks. He deserves all the glory, honor, sacrifice, and joy in the world and nothing less. No words that exist can explain how he has contributed to our struggles and framed the foot-filled society. In the long, spring days, the first annual Big Race of 1589 was just around the corner! Runners of all ages had come to participate in this event. From amateur runners to soon to be track stars to fit and enthusiastic grandmas and grandpas, everyone was ready to rumble and make their way across the finish line. They were imagining themselves running through the red ribbon that marked it. Everyone was so excited that they began practicing with their friends and even their charged up competitors. After a few laps of messing around, the runners started to complain moments later about how their feet were sore and aching. Some people even said they were developing blisters and sweat rashes. Everyone was complaining except one person. His name was Jimmy Kens. Before Jimmy came to...

...We chose helicopter parenting as our topic because we found helicopter parenting a common issue in todays society. The articles we read in class on helicopter parenting inspired us to make a satire video on the issue. According to Dictionary. com, the definition of satire is “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, of ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices…” In our video, we use many examples of satire to express our aspect on helicopter parenting. Some examples of satire in our video include five tools. The five tools we used are mock encomium, surprise, invective, inflation, and situational irony. We used mock encomium in the scene when the mom comes into the classroom and interrupts the class to check on her daughter....

...It was the only chapter on a living artist and explicitly presented Michelangelo’s works as the culminating perfection of art, surpassing the efforts of all those before him. Despite such an encomium, Michelangelo was not entirely pleased and arranged for his assistant Ascanio Condivi to write a brief separate book; probably based on the artist’s own spoken comments, this account shows him as he wished to appear. After Michelangelo’s death, Vasari in a second edition offered a rebuttal. While scholars have often preferred the authority of Condivi, Vasari’s lively writing, the importance of his book as a whole, and its frequent reprinting in many languages have made it the most usual basis of popular ideas on Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists. Michelangelo’s fame also led to the preservation of countless mementos, including hundreds of letters, sketches, and poems, again more than of any contemporary. Yet despite the enormous...

...Assertion to be confirmed: The movie censorship system in America is flawed and needs to be fixed. Encomium: For the past ninety-two years the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) have heavily censored and given harsh ratings to films that contain sexual content/nudity and homosexuality as opposed to films that contain graphic violence. Exposition of the Situation: Ever since the MPAA was formed, its sole purpose has been to view films submitted by studios or directors and give an appropriate rating to the submitted films. These ratings are given to films so parents can know the content of the movies and which ones are appropriate for their children. However, this organization has also used the power they have in Hollywood to their...

...government is good and bad. Rhetoric sees a split between, sophistic rhetoric and philosophic rhetoric. Sophists main goal was to win every and all arguments, they did not care whether or not the subject they were defending was moral or immoral. This led to a conflict of if people should be able to have such a power, the power of being able to manipulate another person. With this conflict we start seeing the rise of philosophers who only defend what is moral. Sophists were the original rhetoricians that would travel to find students. They taught their students to succeed in civic life, how to be thriving democratic citizens, and how to argue both sides of an argument. One of the most famous sophists is Gorgias. Gorgias (483-375 BC) wrote “The Encomium of Helen”. This was a book defending Helen, the woman accused of starting the Trojan war. Gorgias is considered to be a sophist, one that can argue anything, but in “Gorgias” by Plato, he was never able to give a uniform definition of what rhetoric is. “Socrates: What is that which, as you say, is the greatest good of man, and of which you are the creator? Answer us. Gorgias: That good, Socrates, which is truly the greatest, being that which gives to men freedom in their own persons, and to individuals the power of ruling over others in their several states.” Gorgias is not capable of defining his own profession, and when he attempts to, he reveals that he has the power of ruling others. Sophists have the power to control another person...

...I wish to speak on “College Uneducation.” Is it possible that our college education may “uneducate” rather than educate? I answer “Yes.” It is a paradox but nonetheless the truth—the grim, unmerciful truth. We all believe in higher education; else we should not be in the University. At the same time, college education—like all other human devices for human betterment—may build or destroy, lead, or mislead. My ten years’ humble service in the University of the Philippines has afforded me an opportunity to watch the current of ideals and practices of our student body. In some aspects of higher education, most of our students have measured up to their high responsibilities. But in other features—alas, vital ones!—the thoughts and actions of many of them tend to stunt the mind, dry up the heart, and quench the soul. These students are being uneducated in college. I shall briefly discuss three ways in which many of our students are getting college uneducation, for which they pay tuition fees and make unnumbered sacrifices. Book Worship In the first place, there is the all but delirious worship of the printed page. “What does the book say?” is, by all odds, the most important question in the student’s mind whenever he is faced with any problem calling for his own reasoning. By the same token, may students feel a sort of frenzy for facts till these become as huge as the mountains and the mind is crushed under them. Those students think of nothing but how to accumulate...

...Gorgias’ audience would have been well versed in Homer’s epics and would more than likely believe wholeheartedly that Helen was very much responsible for the Trojan war. Despite the fact that this argument seems impossible, Gorgias succeeds in absolving the seemingly guilty defendant. He succeeds in explaining the reasons for which Helen traveled to Troy by establishing that humans cannot defy the will of gods, persuasion coupled with speech molds the mind as it wishes, and that love is a god with divine powers. After he establishing these facts he easily frees Helen of any blame because, according to Gorgias, she was either invaded by love, persuaded by speech, impelled by force, or compelled by divine necessity. After establishing this encomium of Helen, he states that he accomplished this feat for his own amusement. Gorgias challenged a very well established belief and successfully argued his point which proved his knowledge of rhetoric. The reason why Gorgias chose to defend Helen was because if he could successfully absolve her of her bad reputation he would not only display his mastery of rhetoric, but also emphasize the importance of learning rhetoric. This was the beginning of the sophist movement and laid down the foundation for how rhetoric would reach the masses--positively or negatively. As the sophist movement continued to spread through classical Greece, it was easy to see how the use of rhetoric integrated itself into all aspects of life. For example, Antiphon was...

...In his adventurous experiences to Masafuera, Chile, foretelling speeches to college students, and emotional letters to best friend David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen’s essays in Farther Away delve into personal experiences that take a deeply haunting stance on a vast number of modern societal issues. He claims that hopeless isolation clouds individuals in their search for meaning, further perpetuated by the increasing dependency and materialistic pursuit of technology and consumeristic goods. However, in all this, Franzen remains optimistic as he reveals hopeful possibilities for authentic connections through the bonds he forms with birds. The interaction between hopeless isolation and the yearning for authentic connections produces a profound internal conflict within the individual. What is to resolve this battle? Ultimately, Franzen believes that this interminable isolation is cured through the intertwined processes of reading and writing. Isolation is a focal concept in Franzen’s work that he elucidates through his personal history. On a drive back to St. Louis from Minneapolis, Franzen recounts his past: he had just “spent an outstandingly fun week” with his cousins, but loathed his return to his home, back to isolation (“Our Little Planet” 273). His home was the “quiet, dark, air-conditioned house”, and his cousin’s home was “the convivial planet” (“Our Little Planet” 274). Coincidentally, the historical landing of the Apollo 11 occurs on the same day, leading Franzen...

...Nordic Journal of African Studies 11(3): 403-410 (2002) NEWSPAPERS AS INSTRUMENTS FOR BUILDING LITERATE COMMUNITIES: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE EMMANUEL TAIWO BABALOLA Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria ABSTRACT This paper recognizes newspapers, the world over, as useful tools for promoting literate communities. Because of their invaluable functions of informing, educating, entertaining and constructively bringing the activities of the government nearer to the people, newspapers are now very popular and common with adults and young alike. Newspapers are veritable tools for promoting literacy through reading, writing and dialogues (among readers and critics), which are the hallmarks of effective and efficient use of language. Newspapers have a built-in capacity to motivate readers. As a result, it is the common practice in most parts of the country to have people congregate around newspapers stands and vendors every morning reading and discussing the contents of the newspapers. Newspapers can thus promote critical thinking, retention of information, problem solving and questioning of information source. This paper is an account of an on-going study regarding the effectiveness and noneffectiveness of English medium newspapers for facilitating literacy empowerment. Given the need to exploit the enormous resources of newspapers, as vehicles for facilitating literacy empowerment among literate communities, this paper suggests steps that can be taken by newspaper publishers, members...
