...When looking for a truly subjective author, I was able to find a private publication based out of New Braunfels, Texas that is known to regularly share their personal opinions in every publication. On February 16, the NB Citizen released the article “Breaking News: McGonigal Turns Himself In, Released.” The reporter, Mike Reynolds made sure to share his point of view throughout the article, hoping to influence the thoughts of individuals in the small town of New Braunfels. This has been a continued story based off of the activities of the individuals in the chamber of commerce that this particular publication finds to be out of line. This has been a longstanding fight between the two parties and will not be ending any time soon. Reynolds notes, “McGonigal is a victim of a political witch hunt in retaliation for McGonigal’s outspoken criticism of New Braunfels’ city government.” (Reynolds, 2012) Through his personal ties with McGonigal, Reynolds continually jumps to the aid of McGonigal in order to protect his friends reputation. As the reader explores more of the details behind this article, information pours off of the page, showing a much deeper story than what is portrayed through the pages of this report. Through this continued “protection” of a friend, the authors credibility is greatly diminished and left to be based on opinion instead of factual writing. As I walk up to the house all I imagine to see is a big porch overlooking the island. I see a two story house with maybe 3 bedrooms or so, not too big. It should be rustic, in a light colored wood or a nice colored plaster, with big windows where I can sit on the windowsill and look out on the island. I thought to myself “what, a strange name for a campground.” As we drove down the long winding midnight asphalt road, I could not imagine why a campground would have such an odd name. Many literary works from this era reflected the traits of one or both of these philosophical structures and often reflected or built upon earlier works of the same caliber. As most classical masterpieces do, the particular works that display attributes from the Enlightenment and Romantic philosophies have lent a proverbial stepping stone that - intentionally or unintentionally – led to influence on the modern world. First it is important to note the differences between Enlightenment and Romanticism. When stories sound unbelievable, they usually are. In 1981, a young aspiring journalist wrote a compelling story about an 8 year old boy. Jimmy was described as a third-generation heroin addict, a precocious little boy with sandy hair, velvety brown eyes, needle mark freckles, and the baby-smooth skin of his thin brown arms. Who could resist a story about this boy? The media could not. This story is one example of how the media we see, hear and read are unreliable sources of information. Once one reads Janet Cooke’s article “Jimmy’s World,” they feel empathy and sadness for this boy. The media allowed the public to see a lifestyle different than what we knew.
