...Chapter 2 Generating ideas through prewriting * Prewriting – is the first stage in the writing process, during which you discover what you think you know about a topic and then generate details and examples that will express and illustrate your understanding. * Ask and answer discovery questions – 1. What do I already know about this subject? 2. Why would someone else want to know about this subject? 3. What kinds of details and examples make it easier for me to understand this subject? 4. What’s the most interesting aspect of this subject? * Free writing - is a no-holds-barred prewriting technique that involves writing down all your ideas on a subject for a set period of time-typically ten minutes. 1. Write everything that comes to mind. 2. If you feel blocked write something like “I can’t think” or “I’m stuck here” 3. Highlight, underline, or circle your best ideas. * Brainstorming- Is a far less expansive technique than free writing. 1. Concentrate on a subject 2. Make a list of every idea directly connected to that subject. 3. A set time limit isn’t necessary. 4. You can also brainstorm using your computer, darken the screen so you cannot see what you write. 5. Print the list, highlight, underline or circle ideas you think have potential writing topics. * Clustering –is a visual prewriting technique that shows connections among the ideas you develop. 1. Write a general idea in the middle...

...English 114 29 September 2014 Literacy Narrative I walked into my 10th grade English class on the first day of school and was greeted by my peppy, upbeat teacher, Mr. Mathew Kahn. I knew it was going to be a fun semester just from that first day of class. Mrs. Kahn gave us a lot of freedom to write what we wanted, when we wanted to. He had an amazing ability to communicate with students. It might have been because of his young age, so he knew how to satisfy teenagers like us. This teacher taught the material from his heart. He was making sure that everybody had understood the lesson before they leave. This helped me mold my papers into perfection with the help of Mrs. Kahn’s exceptional editing skills. He taught me how to write a paper that only I could come up with. He encouraged me to do this by using different writing techniques. A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. He would open every lesson in a disciplined manner by quickly silencing the class and getting on with the work while still having his bright positive attitude. This was a rarity at my school because my peers would typically waste the first twenty minutes of class. Mr. Kahn showed his students that he actually cared if we learned from his lessons or not. He made sure to get to know us on a personal level as well. We all had a relationship with him and knew if we ever needed anything...

Running head: CONCORD BOOKSHOP PAPER Submitted by: jmb529 Concord Bookshop Paper Jonell Benson HCS/587 Ginger Weatherston University of Phoenix Concord Bookshop Paper This paper will discuss the organizational change process from the readings of, “Tales of Woe at Concord Bookshop.” The variety of change processes gives change leaders and administrators the ability to visualize the internal and external components of change that will go against the status quo and possibly cause a clash between the owners and the workers. The phases in the organizational change model are strategic responsiveness, behavioral change, employee participation and resistance to change. Also included, are the three faces of change and trigger events and change. I will describe two portions of the change process that were not completed or implemented at the Concord Bookshop, which caused failure of the change process. While attempting to implement change, the change leader must first assess the need for change. There was an increase in the amount of competition with...

...One of the busiest areas in any core collection is fiction and in the O library in particular, thrillers are most of the patrons’ favorite books to enjoy. John Grisham, Lee Child and James Patterson are some of the authors whose almost entire works we carry. The quantity of the thriller area can be labeled about a 4 out of 5, with a 5 being excellent. The quality can vary as there are always books being weeded due to the fiction area being so impacted. It seems that many of the thrillers are checked out by our older patrons which is a big demographic in the community. Because the community is in San Diego and so close to the Mexico- US border, there is a big Spanish core collection that tries to cater to those who do not feel entirely confident in English. The Spanish picture books are a specialized collection that is always advertised and always asked about to/by patrons. Many of them want their children to continue speaking their native language or some are trying to teach their children that language. The overall rating of the collection is a 3 out of 5 because even though the collection is big and extensive, the quality could be improved. Many of the books are old (some more than 20 years old) and many are damaged (drawn on, tears, etc.). This is an important collection because it is so popular and it is one that I think needs to be updated and evaluated. Lastly, cookbooks are an area that patrons gravitate towards because there are many different types of cookbooks available...

...writes about Indians and for Indians. His characters are young, ambitious and passionate and have the same moral, social and religious dilemmas as many of the young Indians today. At the same time their context and sensibility too is unabashedly Indian. The new and the third Bhagat book, “The 3 mistakes of my life”, has all these qualities. The setting is the city of Ahmedabad that though being urban is yet not as metropolitan as many of its metro counterparts. It retains its small town flavour in pols (colonies), traditional Indian households and small vegetarian eateries. It has the protagonist Govind with his passion and acumen for accounts and business, it has Ishan for whom cricket is the element around which his life revolves and it has Omi, a priest’s son and loyal friend who is ready for anything that his friends are game for. The book is based on real life events. It begins in a dramatic enough fashion with Bhagat receiving an e-mail from Govind who had taken many sleeping pills and was writing to him while waiting for the deadly sleep’s embrace. Chetan was shaken enough by the incident to track the boy down to an Ahmedabad hospital. Fortunately he was still alive to tell the tale. The book is loosely based on the three mistakes Govind made in his life. What follows is a mix of cricket, religion, business, love and friendship. Govind sets up a sports shop along with his friends in the temple compound with Omi’s family’s help. The shop prospers as Ishan coaches young...

...(intro)There have been multiple great and informational books that have been banned from schools. For example of Mice and Men was banned 48 times.Communities, and Parents decide to ban these types because they’re either inappropriate or they just don’t like the books. I feel like communities, and Parents shouldn’t be able to or have a right to ban these books. (argument and explain your side)Communities, and parents will want to ban these types of books if they have swear words in them, involve sexual content, and contain violence. Some parents don’t want their children to be reading these books so they try and get a group of people together so that they can ban the book. In my opinion a community, or parents within the community shouldn’t...

...authors of the two books studied both Oswalt and Densmore did actual fieldwork to gather data for their books. Oswalt’s only noticeable fieldwork, however, is the interview he had with Jonathan L. Buffalo, a Mesquakie historian. It would appear that the majority the information from the textbook simply stood on the shoulders of other previous ethnographies. Although he could interview the oldest peoples of the tribe, it could become tedious for a textbook chapter. Oswalt also omitted personal accounts of the Mesquakie people of today, but the modern Mesquakie people that he describes seem divided between the progressives and the conservatives. Buffalo seems to reflect an objective view of both the progressive and conservative viewpoints of all the Mesquakie. Therefore, the pattern would seem to be that he cuts to an objective view without relaying an entire chapter on the separate party politics. Densmore includes massive fieldwork and talked and worked with many natives. In fact, Densmore’s “informants” number more than 60 natives and peoples with information regarding Chippewa culture. It appears that her information of the time period is also very reliable. Although she does give a brief history of the Chippewa (which could be jaded through opinion), most of her accounts are simply objective information. It is possible her accounts could be tainted by the use of a translator, however she specifically defines the credentials of Mrs. Mary Warren English in the beginning...

...Jessica Pulido Professor Aparicio English 1302 29 September 2015 Stuck In Another Life I’ve entered a time warp; I'm back in my seventh grade English class. I look around and I see old classmates. People I haven’t seen in years. My old best friend is on my left with her buck-toothed smile and a crooked ponytail. The white walls contain nothing but a solitary poster that reads, "Books are gateways to another life" in bright green letters drawn on a cartoon brain. I can never guess what it means. I walk in to that class after lunch every day, sit at my desk, and stare at it for an hour and a half, yet I can never relate to it in any way. My teacher, strict and on the heavy side, was the type of teacher you didn’t want to get on her bad side. If she even had sides. She was giving us a lecture on how to infer poems with the chalk screeching like nails on the board. Our eyes widened with horror while she talked to us like we were foreigners that didn’t understand the concept of the language. “Songs. Are. Poems.” Not only did I hate poems I hated analyzing them as well. Rock was never in my interest so I detested “Fully Alive” when Ms. Brock first played it for us to analyze. It was impossible to even concentrate on the first verse of the song due to the icicle forming on my nose. I guess since she was a heavy-set lady she got warm very easily and insisted on keeping the room temperature in the forties. The song itself was depressing but it only made it worse that I was having...

...As I was growing up, I noticed I read a lot more than the other kids in my class. I stayed in the library often, checking out all kinds of books. Then when the book fair came around, I would always be in the library observing all the books for sale, eventually end up buying two or three books. My mom noticed that I always had a book in my hand. My comprehension level was higher than most, I even had the highest reading level by third grade. When I was in fifth grade I was introduced to essays. I enjoyed writing them because it was the thought that I could write anything I wanted on paper for people to read. It was then I realized I had a passion for books and writing. To emphasize, growing up I loved every type of book, especially the ones that challenged me. I liked books with pictures, but I preferred books with no pictures. With me constantly reading, I always had two or three books checked out from the library. My first favorite books were Junie B. Jones book. I could never put those books down. Every time my school received the magazines to order books with the school, I was the girl always buying the Junie B. Jones book set. At one point I had every book, and I had read every single one of them. I had to find a different series to begin. As I began my journey to find the book for me, I stumbled along...

...Chapter 1 Introduction Background of the Study In the world of reading, our interest is one of the most salient factor that needs to be consider. It depends on the reasons why we read a certain material. We read because we are force to do so, for school requirements or we read we like it. If we like to read, reading materials matters most. Among the four macro skills in learning, Reading is the most important that a person needs to acquire because it is a vehicle that can be used to know and discover the world of learning and experiences. Reading defined as the process of decoding the printed materials. It is the very important aspect in education. It is basic tool of all subject areas. As stated by Santiago (2003) of Department of Education, National Capital Region. Reading is the mother of all skills. Reading is one of the myriad vehicles that provide readers with opportunities to anchor their spaceship of eagerness and interests – to know and discover the secrets behind the wonderful planet of vision and ideas. (Violesa S. Adrian) However, students nowadays, reading is taken for granted. They access to almost anything electronic such that old habits like playing street games or even reading have almost gone extinct. And one important educational issue is to increase the amount of interesting reading that students engage in. The bulk of the research in this area examined text characteristics that contribute to making reading materials more interesting. Gregg Schraw...

...Themes and structures in Midnight’s Children View Chapter PDF By: Abdulrazak Gurnah Chapter DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/CCOL0521847192.007 Online Publication Date:November 2007 Print Publication Year:2007 Hardback ISBN:9780521847193 Online ISBN:9781139001670 Chapter Description Table of Contents Midnight's Children is a grand book, in the ambition and the scope of its subject, and in the daring and dynamism of its method. It is also an intimate book, attentive to childhood memories of people and neighbourhoods. In both these respects, subject and method, the novel has sources which influenced and informed its construction, and these will be discussed in more detail below. One of them is the novel The Tin Drum by Günter Grass, first published in German in 1959. In 1985, Rushdie paid this tribute to Grass and to the novel: In the summer of 1967 . . . when I was twenty years old, I bought from a bookshop in Cambridge a paperback copy of The Tin Drum . . . There are books that open doors for their readers . . . And then there are readers who dream of becoming writers . . . [For them] there are (if they are lucky) books which give them . . . permission to become the sort of writers they have it in themselves to be. This is what Grass's great novel said to me in its drumbeats: Go for broke. Always try and do too much. Dispense with safety nets. Take a deep breath before you begin talking. Aim for the stars. Keep grinning. Be bloody minded. Argue with the world. This...

...There are numerous types of teaching resource textbooks that educators can use to help them conduct their lessons. These books can be found in every subject, including Language Arts; Mathematics; Science; and Social Studies. Despite the many different resources being available, it might not always be easy to pick which teaching textbook resource would be the best to use in today’s classroom. For instance, two different books, such as Houghton Mifflin Reading (2003) and Journeys (2011) are similar in some ways and different in other ways making it hard to decide which should be used in today’s classrooms. Houghton Mifflin Reading (2003) and Journeys (2011) for second grade Language Arts are similar when looking at their table of contents and glossary. For instance, both have a table of contents at the beginning of the book as well as a glossary in the back of the book. They do, however, differ in when looking at their index. Houghton Mifflin Reading textbook provides an index at the back of its book, whereas Journeys does not even have an index, but instead, it is sectioned off using tabs to indicate where things are located throughout its book. The layout of these two books are consistent and the chapters are arranged...
