...“Verses on the Death of Dr.Swift” “As Rochefoucald his maxims drew from nature, I believe’em true, They argue no corrupted mind in him; the fault is in mankind.” In the first four lines the poem is telling you that the sewage system that is always full and smells so bad is no body’s fault, but the men who made the sewer drainage. In lines six thru ten, “In all distresses of our friends, We first consult our private ends, While Nature kindly bent to ease us, Points out some circumstance to please us.” This tells us that when you have to go sit on the toilet and use it your body feels a sense of relief. In lines fourteen thru twenty the writer moves to more serious tone. Our equal raised above our size. Who would not at a crowded show stand high himself, keep others low? I love my friend as well as you, But why should he obstruct my view? Then let me have the higher post: I ask for an inch at most.” In these lines he’s trying to say that if someone is taller than you they shouldn’t stand in front and block your view. In lines twenty-one thru twenty-six he talks about if you find a loved one in a battle hope that they win the battle and not be killed. “If in a battle you should find one, whom you love of all mankind, Had some heroic action done. A champion killed, or trophy won; Rather than this be overtopped, Would you not wish his laurels cropped?” Lines twenty-seven thru thirty “Dear honest Ned is in the gout, Lies racked with pain, and you without: How patiently you hear him...

...We should not be shocked by the presentation of men in ASnD. In light of this statement, explore how Williams presents masculinity in the play. The men represented in the play are working class and are shown through two different constructs, Stanley and Mitch. Most working class men were immigrants from other countries, which entered America during the 1940s just like Stanley as he was from Poland. Many people who were originally from America at the time like Blanche did not agree with immigrants coming into America and felt they were more superior, you can see this is the play when Blanche refers to Stanley as a Polack. There was conflict during this period, which can be seen through the old working class and the new working class. Even though Stanley was Polack he felt offended by Blanche calling him this, he tries putting her into place by saying “I am the king around here so don’t forget it” This demonstrates he is very confident and knows he is superior than anyone especially Blanche. Stanley always wants to be in control and is very dominant and has no respect for women, not even his wife Stella. Readers wouldn’t of been shocked at the way Stanley acted as it was normal for the working class men to earn the money and provide for the wife and the wife stays at home and does all the house work and clears up after them. Blanche was surprised how Stanley treated Stella, Blanche then tries to change how Stella sees him, Blanche constantly criticizes him personally and...

...Thessa Andrade Professor Heidi Bean EN234: Survey to American Literature 18 September 2014 Anne Bradstreet: Doubting Faith Naturally, any people of any kind of religion at some point of their lives question or show a level of uncertainty in their faith. Religion is a complex idea to accept and to truly have full belief in. Curiosity surfaces when humans cannot prove or understand something logically or scientifically right away. As individuals, reason and solution is a must and the truth is what keeps life going. This feeling of ambiguity is no different for the Puritans in the sixteen hundreds. In fact, Puritan Anne Bradstreet reveals her struggle in faith within many of her literary works. To readers, the assumption is already made that as a Puritan member and a woman of society Bradstreet would incorporate godly worships in all her pieces of writing. Although that is true to some degree, once readers deeply analyzes her work in poetry they can see that her relationship with God is not always all mighty and secure. There are moments in her poems where she feels a certain disconnect or a sense of disbelief in His power. In rare occasions, she even blames God for her misfortunes. Bradstreet begins to see God differently than how she did when she was raised as a little girl. The mentality of every devoted Puritan man and woman in this New World, now called America, is to be a believer in God and only Him. In fact, it is said that “The [...] Puritan was such as one...

...Do the media affect the way people feel about wearing Islamic clothing? 9/11, 7/7, Sydney Hostage crisis, Boston marathon bombing, the Parisian attacks, these are a few examples of events that are portrayed to be the fault of Islam by the media. As a consequence of this, Muslims everywhere have to take the fall for the actions of a minority of extremists. The easiest of Muslims to target are those who wear the required Islamic clothing, such as the Abaya and Hijab for women and the Thoub and tuffi for men. The abaya is the loose body length dress, typically plain black that women who follow the clothing guidelines of Islam wear, alongside the Hijab, which is usually a scarf which covers their hair and chest area. The thoub is the most common outfit for Muslim men to wear, covering from the neck to the ankles, made with loose fitting material. The toppi, unlike the Hijab, is optional and takes the form of a hat which men mostly wear when going to pray in congregation at the mosque. Islamic clothing is seen as an aspect that promotes the modesty that comes with the religion and sets apart the appearances of individuals to those of other religions, showing a sense of belonging and pride on who you are and your way of living; Islam, and the ultimate goal of gratifying Allah. Literature review What are Islamic clothing guildlines? Islamic clothing has a number of requirements that one should follow in order to ultimately please Allah. One of the requirements is guidance of what...

...Bell The Cat - The Fable concerns a group of mice who debate plans to nullify the threat of a marauding cat. One of them proposes placing a bell around its neck, so that they are warned of its approach. The plan is applauded by the others, until one mouse asks who will volunteer to place the bell on the cat. All of them make excuses. The story is used to teach the wisdom of evaluating a plan not only on how desirable the outcome would be, but also on how it can be executed. It provides a moral lesson about the fundamental difference between ideas and their feasibility, and how this affects the value of a given plan. - The story gives rise to the idiom to bell the cat, which means to attempt, or agree to perform, an impossibly difficult task.Historically it was the basis of the nickname given the Scottish nobleman, Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus. In 1482, at a meeting of nobles who wanted to depose and hang James III's favourite, Robert Cochrane, Lord Gray remarked, Tis well said, but wha daur bell the cat? The challenge was accepted and successfully accomplished by the Earl of Angus. In recognition of this, he was always known afterwards as Archie Bell-the-cat. - One of the earliest versions of the story appears as a parable critical of the clergy in Odo of Cheriton's Parabolae. Written around 1200, it was afterwards...

...My Verdict I believe the statement “Miller doesn’t present the downfallof a tragic hero, but the pathetic demise of a small man” is very controversialbecause there are some traits that Willy Loman acquires that may be viewed astraits of a small man rather than a Tragic hero, such as his poor backgroundand unsuccessful career opposingly he might present the downfall of a tragichero based purely on the fact that he is slowly “dying” as Linda states. Aristotle’s belief is that in order for a tragic hero toexperience his downfall the character must make an error of judgement(hamartia). Willy Loman is a man of many faulty judgements, the main error ofjudgement being his strong belief in the American Dream. He didn’t make realityhis point of focus and allowed himself to be drifted into a world of imaginingswhich puts not only him in danger buthis family too, this is represented clearly through his driving. Rather thanfocusing on driving he has “strange thoughts” and “stares off into the scenery”this results in him ‘crashing the car’. His belief in the American Dream isfurther developed through his admiration for his brother Ben, he doesn’t admirehis brothers character or success he admires Ben’s quickly gained wealth. Willystops at nothing to explain how Ben went “into a jungle” and “made a fortune”,this may explain why he is constantly “observing the scenery…the thick trees”. One other major faulty judgement Willy Loman commits is howhe has an affair with a mystery woman when he...

...Bramhills terrifying treasures Spirit Guide: Hello and a very warm welcome, this is Bramhill house. When the time has come, and the night is young, the ghostly hauntings have begun. When you hear it, don’t go near it, I suppose it’s only a dead spirit, I really haven’t got the time so let’s explore and be my partner in crime. (Loud crackling laugh) Spirit Guide: Before we go into the manor I will give you an outline of its historic heirs. In the 14th century a gentle man named Thomas Foxley built this miniature castle only using mason marshals, where their hard graft is exposed in the forbidden cellars down below. Centuries later in 1699 the house was purchased and redesigned. A chap called Sir John Cope demolished the chapel and priest hole so his family were able to share their soul, but they feared when Sir John’s eldest daughter suddenly disappeared. Spirit Guide: Now you vaguely know the past events, are you ready to commence? But don’t worry I have more in store of the dreadful happenings beyond this door. (High-pitched chuckle) Spirit Guide: Ladies and Gentlemen you have entered the corridor where hauntings are forever more; I will take you on a ride where horror is a guarantee, so come with meeee… Spirit Guide: But I must warn you this is now where police train, so please be sensible, don’t fiddle don't play otherwise you'll be locked away. So to make it out alive all you have to do is survive. But it won't be a walk in the...

...Last year I decided to take AP US History and AP English Literature during my junior year. The reasoning behind my decision being I wanted to challenge myself although many of my peers told me to decide against it. With these new ideas hindering my ability to come up a decision I chose to ask a teacher I highly respect to finalize my decision. For current knowledge on what I know about this class I have only been told to expect a lot of reading and writing. Which is what I already expected it being an AP English Lit class. From this class I hope to improve on my writing and analytical skills. Truthfully, I am not the best writer, but am definitely willing to improve which I think can help me push through this class for what is the point of...

...Sahira Younas In the two sonnets, “Remember” by Christina Rossetti and “The Cross of Snow” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the authors address death and remembrance indicating similarities when exploring grieving process but also demonstrate its differences through literary techniques. They both utilized symbolism, imagery, and metaphorical language but showed differences in tone. Christina Rossetti and Henry Longfellow utilized symbolism to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that guides the reader to understand the poem as a whole. In “Remember”, the poet incorporated the volta-the shift. Before line 9, the speaker insisted the beloved remember ought to remember her. Afterward, she changes her mind and says it is better for her beloved to forget her because remembering her will be painful. That shift symbolized the speaker’s love. She would rather sacrifice the only thing keeping her “alive” and metaphorically kill herself, than to ask her lover to hold onto the pain. In “The Cross of Snow” incorporates symbolism in the title. The “cross” is a symbolic meaning before Christians because Jesus died on the cross and “snow” is white which represents purity. Longfellow essentially says that his wife is angelic and pure. Both poets incorporated imagery to means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. In Rossetti’s poem, she includes diction such as, “silent” (line 2), and...

...How does the writer present his thoughts and feelings about World War One? How far is the extract similar to and different from your wider reading in the literature of World War One? You should consider the writers choice of form, structure and language, as well as subject matter. By the extract being from Bertrand Russell’s autobiography it should show an accurate depiction of the war at the time, due to him actually living through these events. However, autobiographies could be biased as they are based on the writers’ beliefs and opinions rather than just the truth and facts. By him also being a pacifist and refusing to fight it would also mean he hadn’t been at the front so would only know what the rest of the people at home would, meaning that they would only be able to access the censored media within Britain at the time. By this being an extract from an autobiography we could expect for it to be a truthful depiction of the time, due to it being published a considerable amount of time after the war in 1967-69. However by Russell being a pacifist it could also be critical about the war due to him being against it. Within the first line of the extract Bertrand already shows a strong feeling of anger towards the war and the people that were involved in creating it “I became filled with… rage against all the statesmen of Europe”. Through his phrase of ‘all the statesmen of Europe’ it shows he wasn’t just angry with the British government but also all the other government...

...“It's not as bad as it sounds.” (Huckleberry Finn) Compare how the theme of outsiders is presented in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, D.B.C Pierre’s Vernon God Little and Sylvia Plath’s Ariel. Throughout the history of literature, the idea of an outsider unable to find his place within society is explored frequently in all three texts. The theme of the outsiders is presented in all novels but separated due to the different time periods in which they were set, thus resulting in controversy and criticisms making it difficult to find a place within literature. Mark Twain’s ‘Huckleberry Finn’ is the story of a young boy, Huck Finn, who is faced with a restraint enforced upon him by society and later acknowledges this restraint once he comes to the realization that there is no escape from the society. ‘Vernon God Little’, like Huckleberry Finn, is also a story of a young boy framed as an accessory in a High School Massacre and is rendered to be an outcast in a society which revolves around manipulation and gullibility. Both Pierre and Twain portray the limitations and issues placed upon a young boy growing up in society. Sylvia Plath was viewed as a feminist icon, her collection ‘Ariel’, adopts the theme of outsider, as she believed women were classed as second-tier in a male dominant society and posed as a response to patriarchy in which oppressed women. The three texts intertwine in the portrayal of the outsider and act as a commentary on the societies in which these writers...

...Something I will always remember about Kelly Kirwan is the sheer amount of wisdom she held. For example, the iconic statement, “Lit is life!” is, I believe, comparable to anything famous teachers like Mr. Miyagi or Aristotle could conjure up. Mrs. Kirwan taught me AP English Literature my senior year of high school, and thanks to her, it was one of the best classes I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of. She had this way of making everyone in the class feel brilliant, like we all had incredibly unique contributions to make and like the classroom simply wouldn’t be the same without us (which I suppose is true in a way, but as a student it doesn’t always feel so). She was always accepting of everyone and sought to understand us as human...
