ENG 3U1 - Script

Theme: Never give up until you reach your goal
The night before the finals in the basketball tournament game, Josh and his friends are at a restaurant for a meeting at Pizza Pizza where they would talk about tomorrow’s basketball game. The meeting is happening because his friends want to make an agreement that if they are down in points, they would give the ball to Josh to make a comeback since he is the best player on the team.
Joe: The team that we are going to face tomorrow is very hard to go up against. Josh, our teammates already made a decision to give you the ball in the final moments of the game to make a comeback if we are down in points.
Josh: No! Can you give that job to someone else? I can’t be the one to handle all of that pressure
Bob: You’re going to be fine. Don’t worry.
Josh: I’m not going to do it. That’s way too much pressure.
Rick: You have to do it since you are the best player on the team.
Josh: Fine, I’ll do it.
After the meeting at Pizza Pizza, Josh would continue to think about the decision that the team made for the finals in the basketball tournament game.
Josh: (talking to himself) Our team is really good. How hard can the St. Henry basketball team be? I’m sure that we won’t be down in points. I don’t want to be the one to make a comeback for the team. Who could handle all of that pressure? My team doesn’t really need my help; I think that we are going to do fine tomorrow.
The next day with one hour before the finals in the basketball tournament game, the Coach would call the entire basketball team to the locker room.
Coach John: The team that we are about to face it is very difficult to beat. St. Henry has never been defeated in the last two years in the Championship finals game. However they have been beat by our team three years ago.
Josh: How would that make a difference?
Coach John: This shows that they are not unbeatable. I know you guys can do it. It took a long way to get to where we are. All of these basketball practices and training is for this one moment. I believe that you guys will make the school proud and bring the championship home.
Coach John would make the team huddle up and tell the game plan where they once again discuss having Josh to make a comeback if they were behind in points.
Rick: Coach John, the team decided to have Josh get the ball in the final moments of the game if we are down in points to make a comeback. We need him to do that because he is the best player on the team.
Coach John: That’s a great idea.
Josh: That’s a lot of pressure to handle. I’ll do my best.
Josh: (mumbling) I’m sure that we are going to be fine.
As soon as St. Henry would arrive, there was a warm up session before the game began. After the warm up session, the whistle was blown announcing the game is going to begin. As the game started, everything went by so quickly. St. Henry and St. John would quickly rack up points for their team.
It is near the end of tournament finals of the basketball game between St. John and St. Henry. St. John, Josh’s school was ahead by two points with two minutes left on the clock.
Josh: (looking at the points while talking to himself) It looks like they won’t need me for a comeback. I guess I’ll just relax since there is only two minutes on the clock.
All of a sudden, St. Henry manages to make four points from two turnovers that St. John made. St. Henry is now ahead by two points with only fifteen seconds left on the clock.
Joe: (passing the ball to Josh) Good luck. It’s all on you now.
Josh panics and doesn’t know what to do with the ball. Josh would look around and turn to his coach, his teammates and even his audience.
Coach John: Shoot it!
Teammates: Shoot it Josh!!!
Audience: Shoot it!!!!!!
Josh with all the nervousness inside of him managed to shoot the ball. The ball was even close to the basketball net and the time ran out. The game is now over with St. Henry once again the champions of the tournament finals of basketball. Josh would throw a fit realizing their loss was because of him.
In the next few weeks, he went to make an announcement to the team and the coach that he is not going to be a part of the team next season.
Josh: If I can’t even make a shot under pressure, I don’t deserve to play on this basketball team. I’m sorry, I have to quit for the good of the team.
Joe: We still need you on the team.
Rick: Please don’t leave the team.
Josh: I’m sorry that I let the team down because of that game.
As Josh leaves, Coach John would follow and would try to convince Josh to stay on the team.
Coach John: I know what you are going through and I had seen this same type of situation happen before. You can’t just leave because of one game you lost. You lose and you get back stronger.
Josh: Coach, leave me alone. I have other things to do now.
The Coach would go back to the team
Rick: What do we do now?
Coach John: I hope he comes to his senses and rejoins the team. In the future, he will find out that he left his favorite sport because of one game. He will come back to the team. Let’s just leave him alone for now and give him some space.
Tom: (overhearing the loud voices from the conversation between Coach and Josh) (talking to himself) This reminds me of what happened when I was on the soccer team.
----- Flashback -------
It was a rainy on the day of the finals in the 2009 soccer tournament; we were tied 2-2. It was between St. John and St. Henry. With only seconds left, St. Henry charged to score a goal. Tom, defense player on the soccer team, slipped on the ground which allowed the other team to score a point. St. Henry won the finals of the soccer tournament. After the game, Tom was extremely upset.
Tom: (talking to the team after the game) I’m done with soccer since I was the reason why we lost in the finals.
The next few weeks, Tom would go hiding in places so that nobody can verbally attack him because he was reason they lost in the finals. The next year, his former soccer teammates Joe, Mike, Sam and Bob told him that he should rejoin the team.
Joe: You have to join the team this year.
Mike and Sam: Please, you have to.
Tom: NO! NO! NO! NO!
Joe, Mike, Sam and Bob: YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
Tom would walk away from them because they thought they were going crazy. As he walked away from them, he would bump into his old coach.
Coach John: Why would you give up on your team?
Tom: I let down my team last year.
---- Present Day ----
Tom: (talking to himself) The next few words that my coach said him me with a ton of bricks and made me realize that I shouldn’t have quit my team. I ended up rejoining the team again because of his words.
Suddenly a loud voice came
Josh: (talking to his friend) NO! NO! NO! I will not be joining the team next year.
As Josh was screaming, Tom walked up to him and pulled him away to talk to him. He would repeat his old coach’s words to him.
Tom: Just because you lost doesn’t mean you have to quit the team. When you get pushed down, you get right back up. Ok, you lost, I understand that. You can’t avoid basketball forever because of that one loss. A loss hurts, but it only makes you stronger. Life is not about giving up. Life is all about ups and downs. You must fight through it. Nobody would be successful if they have never faced a loss in their life. You should never give up until you reach your goal. You have to believe in yourself.
The next season, Josh came back to play in the finals of the basketball tournament. It was once again between St. John and St. Henry. As the seconds winded down, Josh would make a 3 pointer to seal the victory.
After the game, Josh would thank Tom
Josh: Life has ups and downs. As long as you never give up, you will succeed. If it weren’t for your words, I wouldn’t even make it this far.
Tom: Don’t thank me. Thank Coach John.

Script

...!The script is solid overall and succeeds in presenting a clear, interesting story. The characters are memorable and distinct. I only have a few recommendations for improving the script. !1. The relationship between Jake and Polly !I think it would be nice to have some more background on their relationship together. At some point the reason they are together should be made clear. It would raise the stakes once Antonio becomes involved and allow us to see a more complete character arc for both of them. Without it, some of the dialogue, tension, and conflicts sometimes feel a little bit forced or unrealistic, particularly on page 58, 68, and 77. Particularly on page 77, instead of saying “So I’m selfish now,” maybe Polly can say something acknowledging she made a mistake. That way, Jake will seem more in the wrong once he says something hurtful and it will make even more sense as to why Polly almost hooks up with Antonio. !2. Polly’s Transformation !Much of Polly’s transformation throughout the middle of the script seems a bit shallowly presented—merely through outfit changes and her growing acceptance of Antonio’s taboo behavior and ideas. She mentions that Jake wants to change her, but it seems more that he just wants to bring the old her back. It would be nice to have clarification on that change and why it is so hurtful to her that Jake doesn’t seem to like it. This relates to the tension I addressed in #1. I think there needs to be a moment where Polly fully recognizes...

This would also severely hinder the performance of individuals who take their profession very seriously and there performance is above and beyond of what is asked of them. Sticking to the example of teachers, which Schwartz referred to in his video, creativity would be non-existent. We can all think back to teachers who have made classes interesting with there creative teaching styles. However, if Schwartz’s idea of providing a script to teachers were held true, everything would become very vanilla. Practical wisdom is a key term in this video. Practical wisdom in short is doing the right thing and finding ways to achieve what is right. With abundance rules that are set for us, we are told what is right. Thus, eliminating the second part of practical wisdom, which is finding the way to achieve what is right. Schwartz’s idea of making scripts cleans up the mess on the bottom of the spectrum....

...The Python Papers Monograph 2:17 Proceedings of PyCon Asia-Pacific 2010 Experiences in Building Python Automation Framework for Verification and Data Collections Juki Wirawan Tantra jw.tantra@gmail.com Abstract This paper describes our experiences in building a Python automation framework. Specifically, the automation framework is used to support verification and data collection scripts. The scripts control various test equipments in addition to the device under test (DUT) to characterize a specific performance with a specific configuration or to evaluate the correctness of the behaviour of the DUT. The specific focus on this paper is on documenting our experiences in building an automation framework using Python: on the purposes, goals and the benefits, rather than on a tutorial of how to build such a framework. 1. Introduction I work in a growing IC design company that focuses on wireless solutions. The project described in this paper was developed when we were developing the fifth generation of our product. We were facing huge challenges for this project: our product's feature sets have grown so much that manual verification of the features require more than 2 months (and this would involve most of the engineering team doing manual tests). Recent economic situation prohibited any further investment, both for manpowers and tools. However, the project needs to be completed on time, or we would risked losing a significant potential business...

Using Systemic Ideas

...common traits we all share is families complaining about how the same situation arises again and again, which compels me to talk about the concept of scripts. Description of theory Byng-Hall (1995) states that the metaphor ‘script’ is universal in our culture through theatre, film and most of all television: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players” (Shakespeare, As you like it). Because the script theory forms the basis of Byng-Hall’s thinking it provides a link between the theory and family experiences. Although Byng-Hall recognises family therapists have used various metaphors such as family maps; family choreography; family paradigms and family models to describe shared representation. He believes that none of these terms fully represent the ‘drama’ of family life, in the same way as family scripts. The notion of family scripts as described by Byng-Hall is that everyone has the whole family script encoded in their minds, but will identify more with certain roles. Byng-Hall suggests that family scripts can account for how individuals may disown responsibility for what happens and attribute blame to someone else in the family. However he emphasises that this does not imply each person must take on the negative “projection” and identify themselves with it. In fact he suggests a change in script terms, which stems from recognising that everyone has the ability to play a different role in creating scenarios and that in order to solve a problem...

The script presents with strengths. There’s something very alluring and intriguing about the story. The tone is ominous and captivating. The idea of a telling a story about war trauma and stress isn’t new, but it’s always a topic that’s compelling to explore. As much as one is really mesmerized by the tone and the idea, the script attempts to tell too many storylines and they, unfortunately, don’t all fall into place together to tell a cohesive story. To elaborate, the audience never really understands the goal of the protagonist and one feels like there are just too many plots being told, making it challenging to fully follow or...
