...Eric and Kipsy Eric and Kipsy are both employees of a suburban firm that wholesales electrical components. Eric is a new manager of product information who was hired right out of management training while Kipsy is one of 35 female workers employed by the firm, to provide current information of the large inventory of electrical equipment and supplies to the salesmen in the field. The female workers range from recent high school graduates in their first job to middle age housewives. After being shown what the tasks of the clerks were when the salesmen called in to request product information and how this information was located and relayed to the salesmen, Eric was soon fascinated by both the efficiency of the operation and the pleasantness of the surroundings. Eric soon realized how mistaken he was about the smooth running of the firm’s operations. The numerous complaints he was receiving from the salesmen in the field about the product information service showed him there were big problems within the organization. He recognized three general problems which were frequent and serious enough to command immediate attention and action. First, salesmen were unable to get through quickly to the information clerks, errors were excessive and clerks were often abrupt and unfriendly to salesmen when they called.
