Ernest Starling was an outstanding scientist and person. Capable of thinking deeply and testing his thoughts again and again, he made remarkable progress regarding the biological community and new discoveries that were being tested. The pair knew about the studies that the biologist Pavlov wrote in which the pancreas produces pancreatic fluid to the small intestine to counteract the acid from the stomach. Pavlov believed that nerves traveled to the brain and stimulated the secretion of fluid caused the action. Another biologist named Popielski believed that instead of traveling to the brain, the nerves stayed in the same area and accomplished the same task. Although tests were conducted with results proving true to Popielski’s theory, there was no control, and therefore, the nerves were not removed from the jejunum (piece of small intestine). Starling and Bayliss believed that nerves had nothing to do with the secretion of fluid and proceeded to test again, this time with the nerves of the jejunum dissected out. The results were still the same, which meant that nerves really had nothing to do with the secretion of pancreas fluid. Basically, when acid touches the jejunum or the duodenum, a chemical messenger is sent through the blood to the pancreas signaling the release of fluid and the neutralization of liquid.
