Stress to get good grades can decrease sleep quality, make students angrier, and even worsen grades. Another major source of anxiety is peer pressure, causing someone to behave a specific way. Peer pressure is often caused by cyberbullying. Teens feel like they must fit into certain social expectations, then believe they are unusual if they do not do what their friends or classmates do. Due to these situations, the school environment can produce a lot of anxiety. An additional cause for anxiety in youth is genetics. Children whose parents have anxiety have a higher chance of getting a more severe anxiety disorder. As stated by the University of Maryland Medical Center, up to 50% of people with a panic disorder and 40% of patients with generalized anxiety disorder have close relatives with the disorder. In addition to genetics and school, athletics can be a large source of anxiety. According to the US National Library of Medicine, adolescent athletes may experience a decrease in flexibility, coordination, and balance, which not only increases the risk of injury, but also impacts sports performance. Which could possibly place more stress, anxiety, and social pressure on young athletes around the United States. Drugs Among Teens

...and teens, who misuse prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons along with street drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy, heroin and steroids. Drugs and alcohol use on college campuses is universal. This has been an epidemic that has grown across the United States. According to Yusko,Buckman, White, and Pandina; alcohol and drug use in college is one of the more serious problems faced by colleges today .Another study stated that 90 percent of teens said they have used alcohol, over 50 percent have used marijuana, 17 percent used cocaine and 13 percent have used some form of hallucinogenic drug. Athletes are at risk to drug use because of the increased physical demand of athletics and heightens stress and time constraints placed upon them by fulfilling the dual role of being an athlete and student (Yusko, Buckman, White, Pandina, 2008). Peer pressure in itself is an epidemic and strongly impacts nonathletic individuals as well. The use of prescriptions drugs for nonmedical use is higher than are use of cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, ecstasy, and inhalants all combined. Prescription Opioids result in more drug abuse deaths than both cocaine and heroin combined (Katelyn Rozenbroek& Rothstein, 2011).There are a lot of factors that drive teens and college students to turn to drugs and alcohol. The highest rates of prescription drugs used non-medically occur among college students and other young adult’s ages 18 to 24 (Katelyn Rozenbroek& Rothstein, 2011). In this essay, I will...

Fruit Chan’s independent film has depicted disaffected or problem youth touched upon global and local issues especially with his 1997 Trilogy referring to the lives and reactions of Hong Kong youngsters in response to the 1997 hangover, which induced local and global issues. This essay is going to focus on Made in Hong Kong, which youth characters are dominant in it. I will firstly discuss how the local issues being represented by scenes and then shift to the global one. As an independent film, Made in Hong Kong shows the anxiety and confusion of marginalized youth in the society, they are a group of people who may easily be ignored by the society. Fruit Chan has successfully depicted the local issues through the film by using visual motif, monologue, settings and graphic blocking. He has brought up the youth problem, the grass-rooted family problem and the identity problem arose by authority change in 1997 to the society. In the 90s, a rise of gangster movies certainly promoted a sense of heroism for the youth. The society idealized the images of being a gangster and overlooked the panicky side of the youngsters. The main characters Moon, Ah Lung, Ah Ping and Susan in the movie represent the problem youth in the society. The monologue of Moon at the very beginning unveils the failure...

...of body tissue without suicidal intent (Laye-Gindhu, Klonsky, Muehlenkamp, J.J ). However, many acts of self-harm are an attempt to communicate with others to influence or secure help from them, or are a way of obtaining relief from difficult and otherwise overwhelming situation or emotional state (Hjelmeland et al., 2002). One way to better understand this behavior is to consider the psychological correlates of self-harm, reasons why adolescents self-harm, and the various treatments available. Self-harm is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-1V-TR) (1994) as a symptom of borderline personality disorder. However, patients with other diagnoses may also self-harm, including those with depression, and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, schizophrenia, and several other personality disorders. Self-harm is also apparent in high-functioning individuals who have no underlying clinical diagnosis. (Klonsky 2007.) There are many reasons why people self-harm; in a survey Conducted of young people aged 16 through to 25, the most common reason was “to find relief from a terrible situation”....

It is the hope that the information provided in this paper, will inform the reader of the pros and cons of what it is to have a teen using a social network. As parents, it is a never-ending duty to ensure the safety of the lives that have been given to them as parents. One must ask themselves is this environment a safe place to be in and who will their teen be interacting with. Frequently children in 4th-6th grade levels engage in social networking activities. In the process they post personal, potentially exploitable, information about themselves online. (Social Networking Statistics, 2012) Social networking sites provide many opportunities for adults, but leave adolescents vulnerable to predators, addiction, and lack of social interaction. The beginning of social networking started with a site call BBS (Bulletin Board System). This was a site that allowed user to use text only exchange. ...Applying Anxiety to Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory Mizelle Hines St. Cloud State University Theories that can be applied to help clients cope with anxiety consist of Existential Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. It should be noted that the focus of this essay will be on REBT. Anxiety is a feeling of dread that results from repressed feelings, memories, and experiences that emerge to the surface of awareness (Corey, 2009). However, anxiety is not only a feeling; anxiety affects your mind and body. If one’s anxiety level is too high, they may show physical symptoms. It may begin as chest pain, but result in the numbing of an entire limb or even half of a person’s body (Carleton, 2009). Anxiety is seen as a condition or disorder, but it is also noted as a metaphysical and spiritual problem (Costello, 2011). One can experience anxiety due to irrational thoughts that they have created through their cognitions. If a student has the belief that they need to ace every single class, they may become filled with anxiety when a lot of assignments are close to being due. Anxiety is fairly common amongst teens and young adults. The reason for that is because these groups of people are beginning to be brought into the “real world”; therefore there are a lot of changes constantly occurring. With changes there are also uncertainties as well, which can cause someone to experience anxiety. Anxiety can prevent people from fully living their...

...years. It has begun to take over people’s lives and affect the way they live their daily life in a negative way. People are becoming dependent on the technology and it’s causing people to be lazy. If students are doing research, they don’t hesitate to get on Google to look up what they need. I know for me, it is an easy way to get the answers I need. Instead of coming up with topics and information by getting a textbook or book from the library, they just get it from the internet because it’s quick and easy. Also, Technology makes it easy for people to cheat. Most students have smart phones and it’s very easy to look something up when testing. As well as, students (in particular) using the internet to copy and paste information when writing essays. “Dean Morton, a broadcaster for Good Morning America, reported that according to a national survey conducted in 1997 by Who’s Who in American High School students, as many as 98% of students who...

...Engl 101: Essay 3 Final Draft November 27, 2014 Manipulation Affects All I often ask myself if advertisements are this bad now, what will they be like as my daughter gets older? Every day is a struggle with trying to explain to her that not everything that she reads in the advertisements are completely true and that they use certain things to attract your attention. With her being so young still she is still easily influenced by all the flashy pictures of her favorite toys. I believe that people, both young and old, are easily manipulated by these advertisements and I hope that someday they change their approach to get readers attentions. With Christmas coming up I often catch myself looking for my daughter’s presents in certain magazines or store advertisements but then question myself on if that item is really what it is being perceived to be or am I being misled. As stated by Fowles, “When advertisers put for the image of something diminutive and furry, something that elicits the word “cute” or “precious,” then they are trying to trigger this motive” (Fowles 370). With all the advertisements teens are exposed to by the internet, magazines, school, and malls “teens are also exposed to more than 40,000 advertisements a year on television alone” (1) as stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Advertising is sometimes viewed as manipulative and it tries to alter the way the consumer perceives the advertised product by appeals to factors other than the products...

Teenage Pregnancy

...Maddie Bowman Susan Zelms English 101 October 28, 2013 Informative essay rough draft Every four out of ten teens will get pregnant before they turn 20. Almost fifty percent of teens have never thought about how a pregnancy would affect their lives even though having a baby could be one of the most life-changing experiences a person can have. Choosing this topic interested me because I enjoy watching the show Teen Mom and it was always interesting to me what their lives are like with having a baby at age 18 or younger. What I really wanted to find through research were the statistics on pregnancy rates. Researching this topic will give me a further understanding of exactly how many mothers get pregnant and the outcomes of different decisions. The decisions in which a pregnant mother makes should benefit her son or daughter instead of herself. Teen pregnancy causes unwanted stress, financial problems, and most of all it interferes with completing school. Now that this topic has been introduced, now we can get a deeper look on what exactly a teen mom goes through and how it will affect her in the decisions she makes. Teen mothers should be making good decisions in what’s best for her child as far as completing high school and enrolling in college. Education is still an important responsibility of a teen mother. Finishing high school and pursuing a college education will allow her to be able to financially support her child and become more independent. Statistics show...

...5480153 EC1 sec 3 Effects of pressures on students Cause and effect essay That today’s children have been pressured in the society is now considered to be a normal statement. As the world has been increasingly competitive, each person just has to struggle for what is best for him or her. Especially for parents, they all aspire to see their children successful in their lives. The offspring are pushed to study hard in order to get into a reputable university. In many Asian countries, the pressure to perform on high-stakes college entrance examinations and academic competitions is so high that it puts an anxious pressure on many students. Frequently, parents are also the fact that puts even more pressure on their children. According to the research, in Japan, 60 per cent of the students are considered as high depressed (Wike, 2006). While, 30 per cent feel that their pressures are on the right amount and only 9 per cent say they lack of parental pressure (ibid 2006). In schools, students have been overloaded with deadlines of assignments. Some of them have to stay up late with the intention of being responsible to their works. This leads adolescents to get unhealthy and be depressed. Unfortunately, they might start to take drugs or drink alcohol and do drastic actions. It is imperative that being stressful or pressured impact health. The absolute effect of this is depression, which makes students restless, sad, and irritable. They will have lower energy than they...
