2. Words have Multiple Meanings---in two ways we can distinguish

A. Denotative---a Literal meaning of a word that can be found in the dictionary.

B Connotative---Subjective meaning of a word based on our attitudes and experiences.

3.Thought Informs Language---how does it do this? By a theory called cognitive language

A specific system of symbols that we use to describe people, things abd situations in our mind.

It is related to your thoughts, attitudes, co-culture and the society in which you live.

4. Language is Ruled by Grammar---

2 Types of Rules:
SYNTACTIC---These are rules that govern where words come in a sentence.

Example----subject---verb---noun

SEMANTIC---These are rules that govern the meaning of words and guidelines on how to interpret them. • If we didn’t agree on the meaning of words---communication would be impossible.
Examples:

Dear—deer
Where---wear fly---insect fly (a plane)
Right---write

Back---back

Pale---pale

5. Language is Bound by Context---These are the words that govern meaning and word choice according to context and social custom.
Example----would you jump up laughing or screaming while a church service is in progress?

Would you tell someone you want to see others or take a break from the relationship on an amusement park ride?

5 FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE

1. Means of Control----language is an instrument of control and influence over others and self. How?

Example---using the word please or I didn’t mean it or I won’t do it again or I’m sorry.

2. To Share Information---2 way street giving and receiving---4 aspects to informing

On the day before the speech, she wrote in her diary: “I have this moment, while having my bath, conceived an entire new book—a sequel to a Room of One’s Own—about the sexual life of women: to be called Professions for Women perhaps—Lord how exciting!” More than a year and a half later, on October 11, 1932, Virginia Woolf began to write her new book: “THE PARGITERS: An Essay based upon a paper read to the London/National Society for women’s service.” “The Pargiters” evolved into The Years and was published in 1937. Henrik Ibsen, the writer of Hedda Gabler, seems to not be telling us the personal story of the woman Hedda Tesman, but showing us the faults of society for that time period in terms of the roles of women. “The Trapped Woman”, is a term I will use to describe the role of “The Woman” in the late 19th Century. Henrik Ibsen appears to be showing us through Hedda’s life that no matter the apparent strength or background of a woman during the 19th century, they are still trapped in a way which forbids them to be who they truly are. Hedda Tesman, as described early on in the play, due to her background and personality, should in no way be anything but in complete control over her life. As stated by Aunt Julle, “General Gabler’s daughter. What a life she had in the general’s day!” (Ibsen). Due to the roles of women for that time period, she is just the representation of all women in her situation at the time. Women in the 19th century had very minimal rights.
