...his business the artistry and enthusiasm that he longed to put into the literary effort. But his family had to be supported and educated and business came first. As his income increased the Chesnutts were able to indulge in more pleasures. Among these traveling held the chief place. Susan’s travels at first consisted of trips to visit her sister Jane Tyson, who had moved to Washington shortly after Susan came to Cleveland, and to Fayetteville to visit her mother. Charles sought wider fields and travels extensively over the United States, Canada, and Europe. In 1896 he took his first trip to Europe and returned home inspired with the beauty of the Old World and with the spirit of brotherhood which, it seemed to him, prevailed there. When Ethel and Helen began their senior year at Central High School, the important question was what college they would attend. Chesnutt had already decided that his children should have the best education that he could afford to give them. The memory of his own circumscribed youth, of the many difficulties that he had experienced when as a young man in the South he had worked so tirelessly to get an education, had made him resolve that his children should have a good education no matter what sacrifices were involved. Western Reserve University was first considered. It was a fine college; it was in Cleveland; the girls could live at home; the expense would be slight; most of their classmates were going there--such were the advantages set forth by...

...Discovering the Past In the documentary, Heir to an Execution, Ivy Meeropol tries to find out if her grandparents, Julius and Ethel Rosanburg, were actually guilty of treason as alleged. Throughout the film, Ivy, who was the main character and also the film’s director, met with many people who knew her grandparents and had firsthand knowledge of what had taken place. Engaging with these individuals ultimately played an important role in guiding her in the discovery of the details surrounding her grandparents’ treason conviction which ultimately resulted in their being put to death. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg had two sons. Michael was the oldest son and Robby was the youngest. While Robby played a role in the film, the two main characters were Michael and his daughter, Ivy Meeropol. For this reason, I chose to compare and contrast Michael and Ivy. The similarities between both Michael and Ivy were that they were directly related to Julius and Ethel...

...easily able to “impose their more stringent ideological criteria” over the entertainment industry. Based upon your reading, do you think Ethel Rosenberg was guilty and deserved the death penalty? No, I do not believe that Ethel Rosenberg deserved the death penalty. The fact the Rosenbergs were the only two American Communists put to death seems questionable. There never was clear evidence that Ethel had been involved in Julius’ affairs. I am not saying that she was not guilty, because she was Julius’ wife, but her brothers flat out lie is family treason as presented here: “Ten days before the start of the trial of the Rosenbergs the FBI re-interviewed David Greenglass (Ethel’s brother). He was offered a deal if he provided information against Ethel Rosenberg. This included a promise not to charge Ruth Greenglass (David’s wife) with being a member of the spy ring. Greenglass now changed his story. In his original statement, he said that he handed over atomic information to Julius Rosenberg on a street corner in New York. In his new interview, Greenglass claimed that the handover had taken place in the living room of the Rosenberg's New York flat. In her FBI interview Ruth argued that "Julius then took the info into the bathroom and read it, and when he came out he told (Ethel) she had to type this info immediately. Ethel then sat down at the typewriter... and...

...Ethel’s Chocolate Lounges Tim Professor Melanie A. Robinson MKT 100 – Winter/2012 January 23, 2012 Question #1 – Describe the type of consumer buying decision that best describes the choice to indulge at Ethel’s. When faced with making decisions on what to buy, when to buy it, and where to make the purchase consumers use three decision making techniques routine response behavior, limited decision making, and extensive decision making. Of these three choices, the one that best describes the choice to indulge at Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge would be Routine Response Behavior. Routine Response Behavior is described a type of purchasing scenario whereby the purchaser of a product or a service has past experience with purchasing it and can automatically make a decision to purchase again, usually sticking with a particular brand (para-phrase book). The decision to purchase chocolate is something very familiar with most consumers as we have been consuming and purchasing chocolate or chocolate flavored delights for as long as we can remember. The first spoon full of ice cream as an infant, trick-or-treating as a young child, Easter, and (last but not least) Valentines Day has turned many of us into connoisseurs. We know what we like and only need to see the “Now Open” sign so we can belly up to the bar. Question #2 – Discuss the factors that influence a consumer to spend money and time at Ethel’s. Their are four factors that influence a...

Interest groups are composed of a limited range of the body of voters who have a great stake in the issues that their group supports. It is made clear and evident which issues their group supports. Resources are used in an attempt to make their interests public policy. Interest groups are persistent; they do not give up until they succeed and they lobby congress, take legal action, and attempt to influence election results in order to benefit their cause. One such political interest group is the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus PhD, a retired educator from California based in Washington DC, the AARP has been successful in recruiting members and achieving many of its goals of creating better benefits and protections through legislation, that aid retired persons age 50 and over. ...Julius was a member of the American Communist Party (charges of passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union) and he was arrested in July, and Ethel was arrested a couple of months later. Their trial became a big public event and their execution in 1953 made them a public display for the American people. Many people argued that Julius was innocent during the sentencing and the trial but years later people argue that they were not innocent. It’s still a huge discussion to this day. The one source is a picture of Ethel and Julius and the other is a testimony by Ruth Greenglass(Ethel’s sister in-law). David Greenglass(Ethel’s brother) and Ruth Greenglass helped send Ethel and Julius to the electric chair with their testimonies. ...Europeans expanded on that idea and developed solid chocolate treats that sold in upscale boutiques. Lacking the resources and economy of established continental, bootstrapping American settlers pioneered the development of cheaper chocolate bars for the masses. Centuries have passed, however, and the American palate has tired of the taste of mass- produced chocolate. The U.S. chocolate industry has experienced growth of less than 3 percent since the turn of the millennium, and the lack of industry innovation has left a bad taste in chocolate purveyors’ mouths, too. Enter Ethel’s Chocolate Lounges, named in honor of the matriarch of the Mars family, who founded the candy company with her husband Frank in 1911. ...Loyalty: Fact or Fiction Loyalty becomes a luxury in times of hardship. Some have an overwhelming amount, while others seem to run out like they never had it in the first place. Like dust, loyalty can be everywhere, yet be brushed away with a single breath. Loyalty is a gift, but it isn’t neverending. Although to some characters in BW and LotF loyalty isn’t a choice, to others it is valueless. ` Each character has a part to play and a loyalty to someone: King Hrothgar to his kingdom, the Thanes and Beowulf to the King. When Grendel came to terrorize Heorot Hall, King Hrothgar knew the chaos being wreaked would affect his kingdom and disliked the idea of burdening anyone else with that amount of grief (Beowulf 473-476). His loyalty couldn’t protect the people he lived to rule and keep safe. Despite the years of attack, Hrothgar’s loyalty never faltered. The King’s fighters faithfulness didn’t either. They “would pledge themselves to protect Heorot” but “day crept in over each empty, blood-spattered bench...the floor...slick with slaughter” (Beowulf 482-487). Their loyalty was strong, but it didn’t provide them the power they needed to defeat the monster plaguing their lands. Beowulf, an acclaimed hero and seen “boltered in the blood of enemies”, vowed that he’d do everything in his power to keep the kingdom alive and united (Beowulf 418-420). Beowulf didn’t stop to question his allegiance, and the whole kingdom was grateful. But not everyone had such unquestioned loyalty. When...
