...Chapter 1: Introducing Public Speaking Four Characteristics of Public Speaking: 1. Public speaking features communication between a speaker and an audience 2. Public speaking is audience centered 3. Public speaking emphasizes the spoken word 4. Public speaking is usually a prepared presentation What is the historical tradition of public speaking? As far back as the fifth century B.C.E., all adult male citizens in the Greek city-state of Athens had a right to speak out in the assembly and vote on proposals relating to civic matters. The ancient Greeks were the first people to think formally about rhetoric as well as a subject. Many of Aristotle’s ideas influence the study of public speaking even today. What are the main components of the transactional model of communication? How is this model different than the linear model? The linear model process involves several key elements. Specifically a person with an idea to express is the source, and the idea, that he or she conveys to the audience constitute the message. Sources communicate their messages to one or more receivers, who try to make sense of the messages by decoding. In the transactional model, the participants in a public speaking exchange seek to create a shared meaning – a common understanding with little confusion and few misinterpretations. How does critical thinking influence public speaking? When you engage in critical thinking, you carefully evaluate the evidence and...

...The opinions of scholars have been divided, some scholars are sure that plagiarism is an issue of ethics, while others are sure that it is a problem of honesty and responsibility in scholarship. Scanlon and Neumann (2002) have indicated that about 90% of students understand the nature of plagiarism and refer to it as violation of ethical and personal principles. However, they still continue plagiarizing. Students want to trick the system and do all possible not to be caught. Being aware that plagiarism is unethical and wrong, students still do not considered it a serious violation having compared it, for example, to business and corporate dishonesty (Okoro, 2011). Analyzing the issue of plagiarism from the point of view of ethics, it is possible to impose an idea that plagiarism is an ethical crime, since being dishonest means to violate personal moral implications (Zhang, 2014). Plagiarism issue can be referred to education since teaching students how to avoid plagiarism (namely, quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing with acknowledgement), it is possible to impose them an idea that it is completely wrong to copy the ideas of others and each one should...

...The elderly have much to deal with in the limited time they have left. As health practitioners it is our duty to make sure the precious time these patients have left is not spent at a hospital. Elderly readmission rate is unusually high, especially when it comes to the readmission rate of elderly patients with congestive heart failure, thus there must be ways to counteract the high volume of readmission rates amongst the elderly and lower it. The research study by Rich and Beckham used a multidisciplinary approach to treat the elderly patients, who are recovering from congestive heart failures, which might be able to significantly reduce the rate of readmission for elderly patients at high risk (Rich and Beckham 1995). Rich and Beckham conducted the study by first gathering the elderly patients who are at high risk for readmission post congestive heart failure which ending up being 1306 patients. The patients were then randomly assigned to whether they will receive the special treatment or the ordinary treatment by use of a computer random selective system. Detailed data were collected at the time of enrollment, 90 days after they were discharged, and whenever a patient was rehospitalized during the 90 time period (Rich and Beckham 1995). The results of this study show that with an effective multidisciplinary approach readmission rates for elderly patients with congestive heart failures will significantly drop. The research conducted by Rich and Beckham can be used in hospitals...

...VRIJE UNIVERSITEIT AMSTERDAM COURSE ETHICS 4.3 with special reference to PROFESSIONAL ETHICS Code 61432100 [final version January 10, 2012] Academic year 2011-2012 Period 3: January. Faculty of Economics and Business Administration: MSc Program Business Administration. Prof. dr. Eduard Kimman course assistant: Karin Tjeerdsma (k.t.tjeerdsma@vu.nl) Background This course, in the setting of various Master Programmes at the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences, is about the morality of professional people acting in the context of a business organization. Business organizations or organizations as such do have a formal structure in which responsibility ultimately lies with a director or the board of directors. A business organization forms a context for a great variety of decisions. In a juridical perspective the organization is the bearer of numerous transactions. Inside organizations one may find remarkable opportunities for just or unjust behaviour, for moral or immoral behaviour, for situations of equality or inequality which deserve to be evaluated ethically. As FEWEB is a school for the study of economics and business administration in an economic perspective we focus on so-called “economic decisions” which are decisions being taken with some form of economic calculus. In this course we will spend time on questioning whether the economic or financial outcomes of these decisions are morally neutral or deserve some further moral investigation...

...account social responsibility and ethics. When an organization demonstrates that it is more interested in financial gain than in how it treats the environment, employees, and stakeholders it will lose financially. In order to balance the social responsibility and the desires of its shareholder for profit an organization needs to develop a strategic plan that thoroughly explains its ethical and social responsibilities to the stakeholders (Wheelan and Hunger, 2010). Senior executives, business owners, managers and leaders must understand social responsibility and ethics. By doing so they will understand the impacts these factors have on the success of the business. In today’s society firms must understand the concerns of all stakeholders on the organizations environmental impact as well as sustainability. Business ethics are the principals and standards that make up the acceptable behaviors of an organization. The acceptability of these behaviors are made up by the customers, government regulations, competitors, and society in general. Social responsibility and ethics are often used interchangeably but they do not mean the same thing (Crane & Matten, 2010). Ethics are based on the firm’s or person’s decisions that are defined as right or wrong by society’s standards. Social responsibility concerns the impact of the business’s activities on society. To fully understand the stakeholder’s needs the firm should conduct a stakeholder analysis. This analysis will identify the primary and...

...can turn shopping into value by purchasing different items. 2. What two basic approaches to studying (i.e., researching) consumer behavior are discussed in this chapter? How do they differ? Interpretive research seeks to explain the inner meanings and motivations associated with specific consumption experiences. Quantitative research addresses questions about consumer behavior by using numerical measurement and analysis tools. Interpretive research generally falls into the broader category of qualitative research. When it comes to quantitative research the measurement is usually structured, meaning that the consumer will simply choose a response from among alternatives supplied by the researcher. 3. How is the fact that communication media preferences are changing affecting consumer behavior and the effective use of consumer behavior in business? Consumers no longer communicate by voice to the extent that they used to. In fact, younger consumers have turned to social networking as a preferred means of communication. Older consumers may still prefer speaking to someone in person or on the phone. Middle age consumers may prefer email. Marketers have had to change the way they communicate with their...

...Code of Ethics Analysis Paper PHL/323- Ethics in Management March 24, 2014 Code of Ethics Analysis Paper In today’s business environment, codes of ethics serve the purposes of guiding the everyday conduct of professionals, and all those (consultants, volunteers, and board members) who operate within a particular business or organization. The everyday conduct of professionals becomes important when servicing consumers, and is known to directly impact the community. Because codes of ethic govern ones conduct, it is imperative for business to consider the effectiveness of such codes that are outlines in their profession. The purpose of this analysis is to analyze the code of ethics established by the Arrow. In conducting such an analysis, I will first determine what is to be considered based on importance, and why such codes are important, and a justification will proceed. After providing a justification on the importance of such ethics, I will then attempt to analyze Arrow’s code of ethics, by considering how the code will be implemented, possible reactions from employees, and the effects the code will have on the organization as a whole. System of Inquiry After much deliberation, the following will include a system of inquiry that will be used to analyze the code of ethics established by the Arrow.
