1. The author is attempting to define what is Etsy trying to accomplish by defining the meaning of handmade. “By easing the definition of “handmade”, Etsy is trying to accommodate individual vendors who are having more and more trouble keeping up with their growing volume of customers.”
She defines handmade as “it is the human care, effort and ingenuity used to create an object that is important, and not whether it fits the exact definition of handmade.” She claims, “The truth is that almost none of the objects that we think of as handmade truly are.” To prove her point she took an example from ancient Assyrian loom to spinning wheel that have been used for handmade clothes for centuries. She continues, “…machines have essentially made all the thread and yarn we buy to knit and crochet and sew our handmade sweaters, doilies and dresses.”
It is matter because the way we define is our thesis. Where we are agree or disagree with certain statement or issue.
2. In my opinion the author has single view of Etsy’s change in policy. By allowing sellers apply peddle items with manufacturing partners, Etsy is trying to accommodate individual vendors who are having more and more trouble keeping up with their growing volume of customers. Even though the definition of handmade doesn’t mean that the product has to be all done by single person, Etsy is loosing her customers by abandoning their promise. The author was defining her claim very well but didn’t very connect with Etsy’s policy change. I would easily argue with her the term handmade indicates that the object is one of a kind. The issue is not about whether its made with machines or not but it’s about being unique than being factory products.
3. She makes an argument of tools used in handcrafting by stating, “Unless you call the hand loom a machine” and “And what about the hand spindle”. She gives her credibility by mentioning “I have friends, hand-weavers, who spin their yarn from hand-processed fiber.” She used emotions like “Oops. Are those crafts then not “handmade”?”. Also she proves her point with an example: “A fully handmade item, like the fragment of Egyptian linen from 2,500 B.C. that I came across in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is a testament to human skill.” She states her thesis in the beginning of her editorial and gives us explanations and claims to prove her point. She provides credible evidence that makes her claim more acceptable.

Mktg306 - Individual Report: E-Marketing

...internet has changed the way the art industry operates. A critical analysis and comparison of the e-marketing mix strategies of Etsy and DeviantART was also made. The research draws attention to the shift from an industry with a high barrier to entry which used traditional forms of discovering, exhibiting and selling artworks, for example, art galleries, to an industry with a lower barrier to entry, changed by online platforms that allowed a greater number of artists and artworks to enter the market and created new ways in which both artists could sell their works and buyers could buy those works. The analysis of the e-marketing mix strategies of Etsy and DeviantArt found that Etsy and DeviantART catered to their consumers’ needs by the development of a marketplace and social networking platform, respectively. The analysis of their pricing strategies found that Etsy and DeviantART both utilized elements of fixed pricing and personalized pricing, but only Etsy using dynamic segmented pricing. The distribution strategies of Etsy and DeviantART did not include the use of intermediaries and products were sold directly to the consumers through websites and mobile technology. The communication strategies of Etsy and DeviantART were strong with a focus on the building of communities through owned, paid and earned media. It was found that neither Etsy nor DeviantART had a more superior e-marketing mix strategy, as they both had strengths and weaknesses in different areas...

The BIA will identify how quickly essential business processes have to return to full operation following a disaster situation. The BIA will also identify the resources required to resume business operations. B. Mission critical functions The Database server, Email server, internet connectivity and payment services are the most critical functions and if effected will have the biggest impact. Of several issues we observed, one recurring theme is a company being unprepared for a major spike in internet traffic. Ethics of Stock Option Backdating

...Is stock option backdating ethically defensible? Background Stock options are widely used to supplement the amount of non-performance-based cash compensation for executives and CEOs. Furthermore, Bishara & Schipani state that stock options, “have long been touted as a way to align the interests of the executive with the shareholder…”(2008, p. 13) and thus provide, “greater incentives for executives to improve firm performance.” (Raiborn et al. 2007, p.1) However, due to the transactional nature of options that they can be cashed in there exists motivation for executives or firms to manipulate the price so as to receive the greatest gain. Prior to 2002, a company was not required to, “report the issuance of stock options until after the close of the fiscal year.” (Raiborn et al. 2007 p.3 ) As such many firms decided to retroactively increase the value of their share options, particularly executives options. However, by 2002, the time the control measure, Section 403 of the Sarbanes-Oxley act, was passed, 1 out of every 5 companies were suspected to still utilise the practice. Widespread backdating caused a media stir in 2006, with prominent companies such as Comverse and UnitedHealth being indicted. This caused a ripple through the business community as other organisation came under investigation. In 2006, 173 companies were purported to have retroactively altered the stock options of prominent members of their organisations. Retroactively dating options is defined as...

Analysis Helen Jones Honeymoon

...This costume design is for Helen Jones of Machinal in Episode Three, “Honeymoon.” My first step was to look through the scene again to see if any of Helen’s clothing was specifically mentioned, and only her hat and a second costume not pictured was. I searched for dresses that were in style in the 1920s and found most of them to be in a flapper style which I didn’t find suitable, but I did see that lace was featured in many. I then decided to search for vintage lace dresses and saw similar style to the one I picked, but I searched for similar images and found a more updated version. I also looked at Etsy and other retailers selling vintage-inspired clothing to find pictures with more variety in color and better quality. The cap, trench coat,...

One other disadvantage to EBay is the program itself to selling items. The site is very non-user friendly, meaning, it is very hard to use.
