...How do you evaluate sources of validity? We, as University of Phoenix students have different options to do research for our papers. The most reliable information source will be the University Library. Other sources available would be the Internet, media (journals, news papers) and encyclopedias, almanacs and dictionaries. Conducting research on the Internet for our courses is going to make evaluating the sources for validity necessary. Unlike the university library collection – “evaluated and selected for usefulness and reliability by educated librarians” – websites and Internet resources are not necessarily evaluated by anyone. That’s why we have to use our critical thinking in evaluating those sources. Using the academic or governmental directories is in our advantage because we know that somebody screened them and listed only those that were reliable and updated. An easy to use tool for evaluating the Internet sources was offered by Robert Harris, professor and author of WebQuester: A guide book to the web. It’s called CARS test for information quality (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness and Support). What we have to question using this test would be anonymous materials, negative evaluations of the materials, little or no evidence of quality control and bad grammar or misspelled words. You have to ask yourself who the author is and whether or not he is a recognized expert. Some signals of lack of accuracy would be lack of date, (you have to know how recent the source...

Not necessarily for that reason we have to evaluate the authors credentials in order to assure that they are experts in the subject matter (Roberts, 2010). ...* Paraphrase Practice | Evaluating Internet Sources Definition: In a rapidly changing world, Internet technology allows researchers to access the most up–to–date, timely, relevant, and targeted information. Accurately determining the reliability, validity, and usefulness of Web sites is an essential skill to understand and master. Credibility of a website is always important, especially when doing academic research or writing academic papers. In fact, credibility is crucial in academia. As you may or may not know, anyone can post information on the Internet. BobJones.com written by Bob Jones might contain information about the Civil War, but how does the reader know that Bob is an expert on the Civil War? Accurately determining the reliability and validity of websites is an essential skill when deciding to use an Internet source in an academic paper. Use the following guidelines when searching Internet sources for information to use in an academic paper: * Use websites that are credible * Use the most current sources possible * Use sources accessed through a university library These elements are discussed in detail below. Questions to Determine Internet Reliability What is the extension? The Web site address usually includes “www” followed by a period (called a dot), followed by an extension name (also called a domain name). ...Evaluating Websites More and more people are using the internet every day. It is important to know whether a website is credible or not. There are many websites out there that give false information or they give information trying to sell a product or they want you to believe a certain way, so the information is one-sided. Anyone can set up a web page, so how do you know if what you are reading is credible or not? You ask yourself some questions about the webpage. You want to ask questions about five different things; accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage. I decided to research the United States Health and Human Services website. This website is informational website designed to present facts, letting the public know about what services are offered and how to take advantage of them. With an informational website, the URL Address frequently ends in .edu or .gov, as many of these pages are sponsored by educational institutions or government agencies. Examples of these are: dictionaries, thesauri, directories, transportation schedules, calendars of events, statistical data, and other factual information such as reports, presentations of research, or information about a topic (Alexander, Tate, 1999). I asked myself the following questions about accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage.. . Accuracy – how accurate is the information on the page? Ask yourself the following questions: Can you verity the information (sources), is...

...E-Mail and Internet Policy Darryn Cooper COM/285 Angie Robert August 24, 2011 E-Mail and Internet Policy The integrity of a business relies on communication, both using internal and external communications. E-mails and the internet are two ways that businesses communicate with shareholders, employees and their customers. In today’s global market, the use of computer guidelines and policies have been implemented to ensure that all employees adhere to those policies. Communication via the internet and use of emails should be carefully considered when using it. This essay will discuss why e-mail and internet policies have been put in place. *1Congress passed the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, (Privacy Act) to safeguard records of information pertaining to individuals that Federal agencies or components own and maintain. The Department of Defense (DoD) policy regarding e-mail and internet use is very strict. All employees who are employed by the DoD are given a Common Access Card (CAC). The CAC is inserted into the computer and requires that you enter a password. At no time should you leave your CAC in the computer when an individual leaves his or her computer. Ashmore ( 2009), " Many federal laws affect employer regulation of email and internet uses, such as the Federal Wiretap Act; the Electronic Communications Privacy Act; and the Stored Communications Act. In addition, state...

...As computer and internet technologies have continued to grow and improve, they have become an integral part of the everyday lives of those that have access to the technology. Likewise, the technology is a valuable resource in the workplace and most companies provide computers, internet access, and email accounts in order to increase productivity. This valuable tool can also be a powerful distraction, however. These distractions often lead to inappropriate usage of the tools provided by the employer. “In a 2002 study by the Computer Security Institute, 78% of polled enterprises reported employee abuse of Internet access privileges by workers, including downloading pirated software or pornography, shopping on the Internet, and inappropriate use of email systems” (E-Monitoring in the Workplace 2006). This shows the magnitude of the problem that is facing many of today’s employers. The best way to prevent these problems is to provide a clearly stated online policy and to monitor computer mediated communication (CMC). CMC monitoring is the employer’s right and helps to ensure the protection of the company in addition to providing a valuable means to evaluating and improving employee behavior. A common argument against the use of CMC monitoring systems is that it is unethical and violates employees’ constitutional right to privacy. The fact of the matter is, however, that the employees, provided with computers, online access and email addresses by the employer, have no rights to...
